My 2 buddies and I always are bragging about one shot we made or giving each other a hard time when someone misses a short putt or duffs a chip. We do it all in fun and games because we all know we're scratch and + golfers and s*** happens.

One time we were standing on the tee box that had a lake right in front of it (only needed to carry drive about 65 yards to clear it). Group of guys came over to watch us tee off and we could hear them saying to themselves like ooo he's the club champion, he's gonna be on tour someday (to my friend who's going to UCLA) and just hyping us all up. Other friend (scratch) steps up to the tee box and tops his 1st drive into the water. My other friend and I proceed to stripe our balls down the short grass. Friend starts teeing up his shot after topping one in the water and what do you know, he tops another. Without saying one word he picks up his bag and heads for the clubhouse. We never let him live that one down anymore.

What in the world is accomplished by blowing your own horn? You always either come off looking like a fool or worse.

The best hustlers I ever saw on a golf course or in a pool hall make you think that it was just blind luck that let them take all your money and your car keys. In fact, they're absolutely positive, if you'd just play them one more time, you're so much better than they are that you could win everything back. There goes the house.

The question comes up "are you good at golf?"

Answers I use from time to time:

I love the game and can have a good round now and then
I shoot in the 70's on a good a day
I am 6 handicap
Like most golfer I would like to get better
I shot 75(or what ever number) last time I played

I love playing with braggers, as you say most or 10 shots worse than they say. I have a good buddy that is that person he is a 5-7 hcp but doesn't keep a hcp score and smashes his PW 150, 160 if he wants to hit it thin. I myself find the under the radar approach the best. I'm alright, I could be better. Btw I went 3-1-1 on our golf weekend against that "bragger"

So that's a "Yes" to the OP's question? :)

Honestly, I will brag if i do something I had been trying to accomplish for a long time. Other than that, I tell the truth if people ask, otherwise I don't even talk about golf when I'm golfing really. Sometimes people will roll their eyes or whatever because everyone exaggerates and that's okay because at the end of the day- does it really matter? Most of the time I get people asking me about my game when they see me on the range and my normal response is- "Its easy to get in a groove on the range" and leave it at that because frankly it is somewhat annoying when people even ask. I feel like most people only ask because they expect you to be lying and they get a kick out of trying to call you out in front of other people in hopes that you choke.

passive brag story... kind of (ill probably take best for this but it is what it is)- one time playing in a scramble fundraiser for my girlfriends cousins high school bowling team when I was younger I was called out and someone else intervened and put me in an awkward situation. They had events on every hole. There were 6 long drive holes, 6 closest to the pin/ closest to the pin on 2nd shot holes, and 6 longest putt made holes. Small cash prizes because there was a pay in to get into these events. I was having a "in the zone" kind of day and won 5 of the long drives, 3 closest to the pins, and 1 longest putt made. Naturally, after the round everyone except for the guys in my group were calling me a cheater, liar, thief, every name in the book after about the 3rd award I got called for. One group was accusing me of taking the long drive sticks and putting them in the fairway at "impossible distances". I was getting genuinely upset that these grown men were verbally attacking me for being good at a sport I played since I was 4. Anyways, my girlfriends uncle (played in my group) and is the bowling teams head coach and a very competitive person started to get pissed also and started ripping into these guys and basically told them we would go out and prove it of they didn't believe it. (By the way, I donated the money I had won back to the bowling team as it was part of the deal before we teed off). So between the winner announcements and dinner... The whole entire outing made their way out to the range and I was put on blast practically by force to prove my game so these hecklers would leave me alone.  My girlfriend was freaking out because she thought we were going outside to fight (yes it was almost that heated) After 5 minutes, people started asking me how to's and the hecklers didn't say another word. The whole experience for me was embarrassing, humiliating and gratifying at the same time and i would never want to be put in that situation again. Since then, they don't let me play in the fundraiser but rather use me as a fundraiser. They put me on the tee on the #1 handicap hole and groups tee off and then they can pay $10-20 for me to hit a drive for them to use. All $ going towards the team obviously.

Openly bragging without reason is something one of my buddies does like it is his job. He can't back it up however and not just about golf either but pretty much everything, yet he isn't great at any of the things he brags about. He is a perfect daily example for me not to brag.

My buddies and I give anyone who remotely brags hell.

I once made the mistake of saying "See that shot?" after knocking one close. It's now mockingly thrown my way anytime one of us hits a nice shot!

You can't win either way, seriously.  Here's two scenarios I had.

1.) I join up with a threesome, they want me to be apart of their game.  I oblige.  They ask me what usually shoot at this course. I say 74, that's my avg rd here.  PROBLEM IS, I have a bag full of equipment that needs tweaking, lies need flattening, putter needs loft and flatter lie, driver shaft needs to be changed.  It's Early may, I'm an equipment ho and these tweaks take time.  Anyway, I put up 83, (worse round of the year last year).  The guy Im partnered with says, 74 eh?  Are you playing a different tee box?

2.) I'm playing with my neighbors and one of their friends.  This guy a hustler type, he wants strokes, has no shame in taking too many.  So, on the putting green, he asks me what my handicap is, I say 3.  He says ok, I'm a 14.  That's 11 strokes.  PROBLEM IS, we are playing a course that is 70 course rating, 125 slope, with little water.  I'm hitting it well, putting it well, and I finish with 70, he's in with 85.  Oops, that's 15 strokes, I just won by 4 after spotting a realistic 9 handicap player with 11 shots.  He's mad, he says "I've never seen a 3 shoot under par here.". My only response is, "maybe those 3s were actually 7's???"

You can't win either way.

I only brag on the internet, but I have hit just enough club to hit past a certain playing partner early in a round then see how far I can put my driver past his on the 8th hole. Is that bragging or just fun?!?

I try not to... I just say 'trying to get to a single digit' and leave it at that.

I have a cousin that was telling me how good he was and after a couple holes I could tell that he was completely full of beans.  Not even an off day issue... just plain full of beans.

I was hitting some drivers at GolfTown yesterday with some friends. Having a good time with the new equipment. I was hitting the Cally XHot and was turning to my friends while the ball was in the air with a **** eating grin on my face and walking away (Like all cool guys walk away from explosions) I called 295. Some stranger says "Shoot, I should have taken the under". I turn around... 294.

There's a difference in bragging, and having fun. ;)

They would fit right in here with everyone's 210 yard 7 irons and nobody here hits drives under 300.

I never thought of myself as a bragger because when people ask me at the first tee if I'm any good, I say that I'm not very good.  After the round, they usually shake my hand and thank me for my honesty.

But one day I played with an older gentleman and had an especially bad round.  When we tallied our scores, he had beaten me by 1 stroke.  He looked me in the eye and said, "Son, you oversold yourself."
