I tried it once. I was pretty deadly inside of 8 feet. But my lag putting was so bad. I would push the ball like 10 feet right when i was trying to whack the putt 60+ feet. Probably just needed more practice.

If you are using a conventional putter, you could use the conventional style for long/lag putts and the side-saddle for the close in putts. There was a gentleman at our club when I was a kid that did this. He was a very competetive club player at the time. A few people chuckled at him, until he beat them fair and square. As a kid I messed around with it too, I wasn't really any better at it than I was with conventional, but I didn't work at it that much.

That's a fun idea. Maybe worth a try. I use the same putter actually for the side saddle. So maybe I can just stand that way for the shorter ones.
