posted on this couple of times -- pretty clear where i stand

OP came back and reported "out-of the box" solution both parties happy with

dont understand why we have additional comments regarding "principle" and "ethics" "fraud" et.al?

we've even had another retail industry (tires) comment on the commonplace of returns/credits

if you dont understand retail (and customer service), why are you flaming the OP?

you might be a great accountant, auditor, whatever -- but i think its completely over the top to continue questioning the integrity of this transaction.
IT HAPPENS quite frequently

maybe accept that and take it as a learning experience -- or are to perfect to learn something?

funny, this isnt even my fight -- but this board is way to quick to flame people (when they dont have all the facts), or an understanding of the situation.

lot of perfect people on the internet - i guess?

Personally feel that general tone of some responses on both sides of the discussion were overly emotional and lacking of level of thought and respect that initially provided foundation for this wonderful forum and quite sadly, a recurring theme as of late.

One issue is that the title of this thread called it a "return" which implies returning items previously purchased from the store. What OP really did, or wanted to do, was negotiating a trade with a local store.

One other thing to consider before taxman come knocking. The balls were purchased for charity event so the cost should have been deducted from being taxed. I am not so sure if the giftcards and used putters are still assets of the charity.

There should be a law that requires receipt for any returns unless the store has records of the purchase tied to the buyer.  Its not fair for the store. I understand its done for customer service but too many people try to take advantage.

If posters would limit their responses to only words they would say to each other in person, this place might be a lot more civil.

Your question was about returning without a receipt, not about bargaining with store employees so both sides get a good deal. Lighten up a little and try not to freak out when you take a little heat.

You're right, from now on, I will try to be more specific.  However, I think the timing of everything was the cause of my rage.

Ive never done this before, so I thought using the word "return" and "policy", would make the most sense when I posed the question at 7:30am.  Later that day, after I negotiated a "trade", with Golfsmith, I "returned", to this site to report on my success.  What I found was a scattering of stones that had been hurled my way and burning cross with my name on it.  I then was an angry boy, and with every other post I've seen here where people make assumptions and post, instead of offering a simple , "I'm sorry, I don't know about Golfsmiths return policy, I can't help you." (Because we know they can't resist from posting in general, they must say something). They come out guns blazing, without even hearing the results of my hypothesis, assuming my intentions were of the lowest of low.  Yes, these people definitely did not deserve being served a dose of, "Know Your Role, and Shut Your Mouth!!!!"

As it goes for the items being tax deductible, it's only tax deductible for us if I go outside the budget, and its only tax deductible for the event if the item is of greater value than $575 dollars.  The 3 outings raise money for Black Youth Awareness, Research for treating sick domestic pets, and my wife's, Raising money for the deaf, blind and/or mentally challenged.  The triple whammy people need some help, it's bad.

I take new stuff that I win in tournaments back to Golf Smith and Edwin Watts all the time.  I just tell them that I won it in a tournament but don't have any use for it as I've probably already one of em anyway - can I swap it out for another item or store credit and have yet to be denied.  Granted, I buy a lot of stuff from them as well so they know I'm a good customer but obviously the OP falls into this category as well.  Glad you got it worked out.  Up front honesty and a little give and take is what this country used to be all about.

Exactly !!
Once a week someone posts about something they got at a tourney that they don't want, and everyone is quick to pipe up and say take it back to GS they will take it back.
But all of a sudden i because the OP has 25 boxes of balls it's fraud or reverse fraud, or terroroisim.
What's wrong with this site now days ?!!

Yeah, and everyone also just assumed he had poor intentions, also.  Can't blame the stoninsimilarly on his wording.  People who just assumed things are just as much at fault.

tdk Great info that I hope will end this . I'll mirror someone else's comments from early today? suggesting you do ask the Marshalls to close this puppy now.

As one of the early questioners, I didn't tell you explicitly before, I did understand your anger and the quick trigger to the insults to your integrity. I think you already understand that as I didn't react to that. And I think you also understand that I am sorry for my own quick trigger reply, how I worded it.

As someone else said yesterday I think you are a good dude who has posted over 800 times on GolfWRX and went to that site for advice. The innocent ask to the forum was misunderstood from  the wording of the  question posed. And went nuts from there.

Right, I think it's time for this thread to be locked.  It was entertaining in the least.

TDK-I know what you really did.

You wouldn't so happen to be from the Midwest would you? Michigan? Ohio? Indy?

NO!  Lol!  I live in the deep south now and I Know of Meijers, because we shop there when we travel to Gaylord every summer.  Look, I bought some from Golfsmith, and the others came from..............Amazon!!! I bought 785 dollars worth of balls, about 38 dozen, only 13 were taken, astonishingly.   I hate to admit it, but I'm a penny pinching golf ho, junkie, etc and I couldn't resist the lightning deal back in March, plus I had a corporate card and I get bonus points, I'm pathetic.

Anyway, so I guess Meijer was clearancing some balls today.  That happened to be the same balls I had, lol.  That's called a coincidence my friend. I hope some folks got a good deal. Sometimes Target has some good clearance deals

haha the only reason I said that is because the thought crossed my mind to do the same. I am sitting on 9 dozen...Not sure what I am going to do with them yet..

I hear ya, I guess some folks really went nuts on gloves and balls.  What a great deal that must have been.  I suppose you could try and do what I did, or maybe take them to a golf store where you are a good customer.  Or you could fill up a pool of golf balls and dive in like Scrooge McDuck.
