What about players standing on the green waiting to putt out? Players standing cross foot using a putter as a support?
What about a player using a putter as a support to reach in and remove a ball from the cup?
I could argue bad etiquette on the above scenarios. The PGA, LPGA ect. and players have decided that it's ok or there would be rules or expectations against it. Same with the flagstick. Etiquette is different for everyone and in the case of the OP's scenario, The PGA and players have decided that it's not a big deal, or we wouldn't see it happening.

After the long putter ruling that's expected soon, I believe we are going to have a "square inch of foot size" restriction implemented in which people with small feet will be banned from greens unless they wear oversized clown shoes to spread their foot impact over more of the green's surface. Some say these new shoes will add to one's stability when putting, though others are concerned about the amount of sand which will be displaced when taking one's clown-stance in a bunker. You heard it here first.
