just a quick question involving painting the r11s driver head.  i tried painting my r11s flat black and i used rustoleum spray paint.  i sanded down the head and sprayed 3 coats of paint on the head and it came out great.  i didnt spray primer because i saw some posts that say you didnt need to.  it has sat for about a week after painting it.  i just noticed today that the paint will rub off.  just curious if anyone had a suggestion if it was the paint, if i should have used primer before the paint or it just would need to cure a lot longer.  its easy to get the paint off right now so i was going to redo it.  i know i have seen people using krylon paint, so i was thinking the paint choice may be the culprit.

What grit paper did you use? And what type of paint (as in acrylic, enamel, acrylic-enamel, etc).

it is the rustoleum 2x ultra cover spray paint.  looking at the can right now, i cant find whether its acrylic or enamel.....  i used a 3m fine sanding pad.

Not sure what grit that is, but I would go no finer than 800 grit, I usually use 600 grit, personally.

As for the paint, I like using DuplaColor automotive paint in flat if it has to be rattle can paint.

i ma have to try and take a look at the duplicolor paint then.  but basically an enamel spray paint would be the best?

did you happen to get that paint at an autozone?

I use rust oleum previously and it didn't hold up well at all. I used the flat black enamel paint from autozone, 120ish grit sandpaper, it has held up really well on the heads that I've done. I usually let them sit in front of a heater between coats, or use a heat gun to help them cure.

Sounds like the painted was not mixed properly or was expired. I've used rustoleum and have not experienced any failures. I've got a couple Cleveland classics I've painted flat black. 4 months and no problems. Heck painted it, let it set outside to dry over night and used the next day. Still have in my bag.

Have you used the rustoleum 2x coverage before. Im just wondering if i got the wrong paint. I know i shook the can for several minutes before spraying, and shook in between coats.

I think im going to get the duplicolor paint and get actual 100 grit sandpaper instead of a sanding pad as well.

just an update cause i still need some help.  i went to buy the duplicolor paint, but my autozone was out of flat black paint at the time.  i was at walmart and saw they had a rustoleum protective enamel in flat black and bought that.  i also bought the primer.  i sanded the head down with 100 grit sandpaper and then spayed 2 thin coats of the primer.  i let that dry and then sprayed 4 coats of the flat black paint.  i've let it sit and dry indoors for about a week.  and i still have the same problem of the paint rubbing off if i rub it against a piece of paper of even cardboard.  is this because i need to let it dry for longer or is there something wrong im doing with my prep that isnt letting the paint adhere to the surface?  or is this normal to a degree?

Here is one I did for giggles. The world renowned "Supersize" Titleist Howitzer. 8 coats and a coat of clear. Banged it at the range for 4 or 5 days......no problems.

It sounds like the head is not being cleaned well enough after you sand. Prep is the most important part of the process and you need to make sure NO dust is left from the sanding at all.

i guess i will just have to try and clean it up a little bit better then.  i also was thinking about maybe buying a flat clear coat and spraying that at the end of the process.

I have used 2x rustoleum without any issues in the past...sanded down the OEM paint and gave it 3 or 4 coats... give me a few and I will post the pics.

One key is multiple light coats.  Do not spray thick at all.  The first will look like a dusting of paint.  That's my method

try throwing it in front of a heater while it is drying or use a hair dryer or heat gun to help cure the paint

After a light sanding I taped off the face. MAKE SURE YOU USE SOME TYPE OF DEGREASER BEFORE PAINTING



4 Coats of VERY LIGHT PAINT LATER...
