Seems like 52*/58* has become the most common wedge combo

Seems like this is the combo that comes up most when the topic comes up.
Is this your observation also?
Why do you think this is the case?

I was 52/56, but now may try 52/58 because of my inability to settle on my combo!

I didn't use the 60 that much, don't hit full shots with the 56, and wanted something with a little more loft for flexibility. 58 it is!

I just switched to a 54*\58* combo and I like it. I'm currently bagging old school irons with traditional lofts so my PW is 50*.  Theres hardly a gap between 50* and 52* so the 54* is ideal.  The 58* is more versatile for me at my home course for the mid-longish bunker shots around the green where the bunkers are fairly deep. Plus, I can still flop it like my old 60*.

I have been basically playing this set up since about 2007.  I find the 52 degree is a good full club distance for me and so versatile from all lies and bunkers.  I find the 58 degree can do everything my old 60 could in and around the greens but is so much better on full shots for me.

I messed with a 54/58 combo but the gaps were not ideal for me. I also like my 52 for chipping.  I prefer a little less loft and do not like chipping with 56, 58, 60 wedges unless I am short sided.  I found that I was not as consistent chipping with the 54.  Probably due to playing the 52 for so long but I have that dialed in now.

I just wasn't good enough to use the 52 degree for enough different shots. I am much more comfortable wit 4 degree gaps and letting the clubs take a little of the pressure off me. For anyone that can make the 52 degree sing, the 52-58 combination is a no brainer...

Tried all different combinations last year and settled on 52 and 58. I don't see changing anytime soon either.

I'll still always use a 60* wedge. I play 3 wedges now, but even when it was 2 it was always 54/60.

Seems like 52/56/60 is still the most popular, but I don't see myself switching from 52/58 anytime soon.

I've been playing a 52/58 combo ever since I was a sophomore in high school. At the time, I needed a little more loft than an average sand wedge, but I didn't have a use for a 60. I never really changed after that and it's been about 7 years, so I guess I just stick to the distance gaps I'm used to.

I have done 52 / 58 for many years.. it simplifies the short game and I have never had a shot I could not pull off that setup

i also have a 64* which i add in on courses that are very short

I'm actually switching from a 52/58 setup to a 52/56/60. This is after putting a 20* hybrid in the bag and deciding that I don't need a 3iron.

I play my older MacGregor (1025C VIP) irons' PW, a 49* Vokey, a 52* Vokey, and a 58* Vokey. The last, I ground off the back of the 12* bounce to give me better performance out of the hard packed sand we usually have here. So to answer the question, I do use the 52/58 combination although the effective bounce on the 58 has been ground off somewhat. I should note that I tend to us my PW, 49, and 52 as 10, 11, 12 irons. For finesse / feel shots, I usually use the 58*.

ps: my HI has ranged from 8 to 14 in the last year. Frustrating, but true, and potentially useful info in interpreting my response.

I have a 46* PW so I go 50*, 54*, 60*

Not sure I could pull off just 2 wedges. But I know for sure I don't have a large gap in my lower lofted clubs.

Right now I game a 54 and 58, and used to play 54/60 but struggled with the 60. My TVD 58* has made a huge difference in my wedge game. I'm thinking my next wedge will be a 54* SM4 with the stock M grind (54.11) bent 1* strong - it will match the gap as well as variety and turf interaction I want.

I have played 52/58 for the last two years, no complaints here.  I will never buy a 56 again!

I used to play 52/56/60 but last year I put a 5w in the bag and dropped the 60. Gamed 52/56 for a while but I wanted a bit more loft so I replaced the 56 with a 58.

I go 46/51/58/64

Need the gap wedge for my yardages

Namely the 58 is my go to club around the greens for pitching and also great for 40-80 yard partial shots

60 was just to inconsistent for greenside chipping .. for me anyways

64 is a must for my home course traps and I love it for greenside floppers out of the rough.  The 64 can be a weapon if used appropriately

Does anybody here have a 45, 52 and 58 combo? My iron set came with a 45 degree PW, and i'm waiting to pull the trigger on a Black Friday deal for a pair of CG14s.

I play 45/52/58

Doesn't present a problem but i have worked.very hard learning how to control my PW for different distances. If you are.not good on 1/2, 3/4 shots then you should keep 4* gaps. I find the player who prefers to use his swing length and tempo to control distance does will with 52/58 and player with less finese likes 52/56/60. That's just my opinion

good luck

Tried 52* 58* this year and ended up selling the wedges and going 50*, 54*, 58* (new wedge set).  Just better lofts for me as I like to hit full shots with my 50* and 54*.  Debating on chaning out the 58* to a 60* next year, but won't decide until early spring if I order something new.

I used to be a 52*/56*/60*, but this past season I've played 52*/58* and I don't think I'll ever go back. I love the fact that it opens up an additional slot at the top of the bag, and as  long as you have a fairly versatile grind on the 58*, you can hit all the shots you need.

I've contemplated going to 52/58. Off the tee is the stronger part of my game so I really don't care about extra hybrids and rescues as I don't use them. I like the versatility of 3 wedges. But don't take my word for it. I can barely break 90 :(

I have used 50/55/60 forever and am getting ready to go to 53/58.  I hope I am not making a mistake.  My PW has been bent to 46 hence the setup I used and played 4-PW, hybrid, 3wd, Driver.  I am going to get a set of Scratch irons and their PW is 48, so I am going to carry 3-PW with the 53/58 setup.  I am sure it will take some getting used to.  I really like my 60 and I hope I don't miss it.

52/58 for the last 8 years.. easily the most versatile combo, IMHO, for the three wedge system(pw and 2 lower)...just seems to give you the most consistently hit yardages..especially the 52...this should cover most people, if they are playing the right tee box on a short to mid par 4, for the yardage that they most encounter in those situations.  just sayin!
