There's no issue anymore, he's not #1 thankfully and Rory looks in good shape to keep it that way.  Or Luke gets game to win a major in which case more power to him.
Then what's your problem, exactly?

What's yours?

You can't seriously compare TW to Luke Donald.

It doesn't matter how long it was, he proved he has what it takes.

I mean with all respect to LD and his fans, Luke is FAR behind Woods in golfing accomplishments.  In fact I don't think Luke will get in the HoF unless he gets a major and Tiger could get 6 people in HoF with his record.

So, the worlds CURRENT no.1 golfer is a lifetime achievement award? THAT makes sense...

I've always been a fan of JN- best ever. And his current ranking proves it...

The issue was being discussed in this thread at length.  I am not sure where you're going with this but if you go to page 1 and read the posts you can figure it out perhaps?

sweet dodge.

Back to the question...You are bringing up an issue that doesn't exist, am I understanding that right?

Nobody is saying that Luke Donald is better than Tiger Woods.

Even Luke would say he is not (better).

Yeah, Tiger does need to figure out his driver to win a Major, you're right...

Yeah and when he does he will have 15 more than Luke. Not to mention he has already won majors when he can't really find the planet with the driver, it's not as big if a deal when you aren't spotting almost every other top player 20 yards without hitting any more fairways.

Nope, but we dislike having a #1 without any major presence aka a vulture.

Like someone above said, once he wins a major this whole issue disappears.

This "you can't be #1 if you haven't won a major" thing pops up from time to time, but I've never heard anyone explain how the ranking system should be modified to incorporate this rule.

As much as I like Luke, I'm not sure he can compete with Tiger or Rory on any sort of regular basis when either is near the top of their games.  I also tend to agree with those saying that #1 should have a major under their belt.  I don't think they need to have won it during the time period they obtained #1, but I do think they should have one.  Maybe a "1*" is needed... haha

Anyway, with all that said I'd really, really like to see Luke win a major at some point in his career!

Yup, still think some people (not you) only like big hitters, so they don't consider Donald worth to be #1, with or withour Major (imho)

After the first Major some people will whine it was just luck and they will be waiting for the 2nd one :D

For some reason people always seem to find a stick to beat Donald with. People said he was boring.. and he shoots 6 birdies in a row to win at Disney and the money title.. people said he wasn't clutch enough and then he hits a 7 iron from the rough to 6 feet in a playoff at the Transitions and makes the putt to win. People said he couldn't win the big events and he wins the flagship event on the European Tour (twice) and a WGC, and he has won 8 of his 11 Ryder Cup matches.

Now the only thing in golf he doesn't have on his resumé means he can't legitimately claim to be #1 golfer in the world. I really hope he gets a major soon, and I'm confident he will.

I mean seriously...people are inventing stuff to disrespect a guy who already get zero respect.  In typical Message board fashion, it's all problem but no solution.  At the time of LD getting the #1 ranking which player would you guys in the "needs a major" crew have ranked above him?  List the Major winners in that time frame that might have got to #1...and stayed there through his play.  This is where your argument falls short.  Kaymer had it with his PGA win but he fell off the map.  This is what I like about the OWGR.  You play well or you drop.  Period   What you did 3 years ago doesn't mean diddly squat.  The fact that you have 14, or 4 or 18 doesn't mean squat.  You earn your ranking from play.  Majors are already given the highest accolade with the highest number of points.

That's correct, Luke Donald has not won a major, but I think that's just an excuse a lot of folks just trot out to disrespect Mr. Donald. Luke's not cool because he doesn't hit 300 plus yard drives, doesn't awe us with his 180 yard 8-irons, doesn't hit approach shots into par 5's with 6-irons. That's not cool. They say "chicks dig the long ball". But I think a lot of guys dig it more.

Luke is workman like. He's steady. He has a great swing that for the most part holds up under pressure. But for most, unfortunately, he's no "cool hand Luke". Say what you will, Mr. Donald is a great golfer, I'm sure Messrs. Woods and McIlroy would be the first to agree.
Hey...be nice.

What you're asking is would Luke Donald's career resume be bolstered by a Major win.  And the obvious answer is YES.

But this has ZERO to do with the question at hand.  I don't know why this concept is so hard for normally intelligent people to understand.

Unfortunately Donald is wearing the anchor of "Best played to have never won a Major."  That's where most people stop.  And admittedly, I was in that group a while back saying it's invalid.  However, I've come around somewhat.  To play consistently over such a long period of time is insanely hard to do.  No, he's not going to win 14, 18 or possibly, as crazy as it sounds, 1.  Something I honestly believe will not happen.  I think he's got ONE in him.  He's so strong in his iron and wedge game, it can make up for not being able to bomb it 300 yards.  I'd take driving it 270 and hitting a 6 iron to 10-15 feet instead of that 8 iron any day.  When you're just as accurate with a long iron is saying something. "Cool Hand Luke" is a well earned nickname because that's what he is.  Cool under pressure.  I still find it hard to believe  he doesn't have one at this stage.

Your earlier post was 100% correct, this is not a conversation. Have a good thanksgiving Vin!

Starting to cook in three hours for 25 coming tomorrow.  Someone hit me in the back of the head with one of those Covert drivers.

It's a tough call between who has won more money and who has bagged one Major that was won in conditions suited for his play, but has not factored in a Major since.....I'd have an easier time elevating ZJ far above LD if he can prove it wasn't a fluke.  But he does have a Green Jacket so....

Tough call.  It really is.  I think Majors are important but I don't believe they are the end all be all.  And if you asking me if ZJ should be ranked higher than LD because of a Masters win 5 years removed, then the answer is no.

The people who are of the opinion Luke was undeserving of the #1 ranked player, are the people who are hard of thinking.

Rather, the people who think he was deserving of the #1 ranked player because of some stupid computer program as opposed to thinking and watching for themselves are the ones who are hard of thinking. Hope you enjoyed the spell when the calculations fell just into place for you. The stars probably won't align like that again.

Good post.  I am in the same group.  The guy is just consistently good.  I hope he wins a Major soon just so we can put an end to this discussion.  Have a good Thanksgiving.

You might have a point except that he won more times in the last 2 years than anyone else on the planet except for 1 player, and they're tied.

You can ignore facts all you like, but that doesn't mean they don't exist...
