Last I checked boxing was 1 vs 1 and a golfing major 1 vs ~150 so that analogy doesn't work for me.

Nice to be going over this well trodden path yet again though, I do enjoy a familiar walk through the forest. (Quite often after a tee shot but that's another story)

I think sometims people have a hard time giving Luke the credit he deserves.  Both Tiger and Rory hit shots all the time where we say, "I could never do that..."  Players on tour watch them hit shots and say the same thing....but noone ever says that about Luke...He is the kind of player who will just par you to death...make a bunch of up/downs and all of a sudden it's a boring 66....

Probably because he doesn't hit 320 off the tee, or hit 180 yard 8-irons. Sigh...

Meh. He shouldn't have been #1 and hopefully he won't again until he can contend and at least come close in the majors. That's when you can talk about being the best, when the best all try to peak and lay out it all on the line. He's usually not even in the conversation in the majors. Sorry, you can win all the BMW's or whatever, but if you ain't battling with the big boys regularly on Sunday in the Majors, you ain't the best.

Well, its not really like he can't handle the pressure. In today's golf and especially the majors, distance is key. If you think about it he is never really a favorite to win in majors, even if he is on fire.

Who cares about the top 10?  Honestly I'm more compelled right now with #45-60  Those are the guys battling to get in the Majors and WGC's.  Matteo climbed another 3 spots to 43.  Mechanic needs to get a few more spots to get in to all Majors, even after this win.  Padraig, Bae, Huh, all these guys trying to get in "the sweet spot"

There is no conversation.
He has been #1 and could be #1 again.

It's not a vote or an AP coaches poll.

Let's see what happens.

I would be, and I'll say again that people need to try harder to separate the OWGR, with active career ranking, or all time ranking, because they are 2 totally different things.

This 1 million times over. Taking some people's logic the World Rankings should still have Nicklaus at #1.

Regardless of what the rankings say, nothing that I watch would make me rank Donald ahead of Tiger. And unless he figures out how to drive the ball, I don't see him winning a major.

I don't care.  The ranking system is non-sense.  It makes the BCS look like it was developed by Einstein.

Difference:
The BCS is at least partly based on humans voting, which means voicing their personal opinions which are not necessarily backed by facts and results.
In fact, this is exactly what happens on this forum whenever somebody does not accept the World Rankings.
The Golf World rankings on the other hand are a system which works only by numbers. You play a certain way, you get points for it. The better you play, the more points you earn. It is simple really. There is nobody with any bias whatsoever who gets to vote on anything.
Funny thing is, the posters who criticize the World Golf Rankings the most and who compare it to the opinion biased, non-mathematical system of the BCS, are also the ones who want the OWGR to be more like the BCS, whenever they do not like the results of simple maths.

But I have to admit that I also think that there are some flaws of the OWGR system. Moneygrabbing events with extremely small fields should never be worth any ranking points at all.

Edited by avrag, 20 November 2012 - 03:42 PM.

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

Nope, but we dislike having a #1 without any major presence aka a vulture.

Like someone above said, once he wins a major this whole issue disappears.

Why do people assume there is an "issue"?  That's pretty megalomaniacal, I think.

He was #1 with no Major already, and nothing has changed.  So that tells me that nobody who matters cares what some of you think about the rankings.  The only issue is an invented irrelevant one.

There's no issue anymore, he's not #1 thankfully and Rory looks in good shape to keep it that way.  Or Luke gets game to win a major in which case more power to him.

You can't seriously compare TW to Luke Donald.

It doesn't matter how long it was, he proved he has what it takes.

I mean with all respect to LD and his fans, Luke is FAR behind Woods in golfing accomplishments.  In fact I don't think Luke will get in the HoF unless he gets a major and Tiger could get 6 people in HoF with his record.
