Will he be battling McIlroy for the top spot in 2013?

I don't think it's likely, but it is entirely possible.  Nothing saying he can't bag another wgc, or yet another BMW PGA, which carries more owgr points.

when will this take place, by the end of the year? Middle of the year?  "2013" is a broad scope of time...

I think people tend to underestimate Donald.  The guy is nothing fancy, but he gets the job done.  He is one of the most consistent golfers on tour.  I don't see him going away any time soon.

There should be a disclosure where you can't be #1 if you have not won a major. The #1 (best golfer) in the world needs to prove that he can manage that type of pressure. #2 is where Donald currently belongs, good for him.

Dream on, silly fanboy.  Woods is quite a ways behind McIlroy in OWGR points.  If you look at points, world #10 Brandt Snedeker is closer to overtaking Woods than Woods is of overtaking McIlroy.

I'm sure you been asked this, and I'm not trying to be a jerk, like I sometimes do, but if Tiger gets to #1 next year having not one a major in the allotted time slot, would you be okay with that?

I am totally fine with it.  The owgr sometimes gets muddled (rightly so) between the #1 in the last 2 years, and the #1 of current golfers.  And I understand that, because that's how our brains work.  But I think people should really try harder to separate the two.  The system creators realize that Majors are the most important, so they put a premium on those with points

I do agree with you BUT it is a lot harder to become #1 in the world without a major.

I think after the Masters Tiger will be #1 and will be holding on to it for quite a while.

What MileHighClub said.

Luke Donald isn't flashy or a big hitter, but he definitely finds a way to always be in contention.

TW Has 14 majors. With that said if he were to be #1 at the end of 2013 and still hasn't won a major since 08 and you asked me "who would you bet on to win a major" my answer would not be TW.

To me being ranked #1 is like being the Heavy Weight Champion. If you get to #1 without winning a major it's like you got the belt because the prior champ retired, rather than beating him.

Luke is the most consitent player in the game.  He's not flashy and doesn't win the majors but the guy is always there.  He will never be #1 again though and that will be because of the majors.  Being honest I think were moving into the Tiger/Rory era and it looks to be excited times.

Duly noted....but that's not what I'm asking you.  What I asked you was...If Tiger woods got back to #1 without winning a major in the current 2 year OWGR cycle, would you be okay with that?

I would be, and I'll say again that people need to try harder to separate the OWGR, with active career ranking, or all time ranking, because they are 2 totally different things.

I would not consider him the best player in the world if he does not win a major in '13 regardless of his OWGR, active career, NHRA, NBA, NLCS or PBA ranking,

Spot on.  The OWGR recognizes how a golfer has played over the past two years.  A victory from ten years ago is nice, but it is not an indicator of how they are playing now.

I would only be slightly surprised to see Luke take the first major of 2013 and re-take the top spot. He's had a T3, T4 and a T10 there.

This 1 million times over. Taking some people's logic the World Rankings should still have Nicklaus at #1.

If you asked someone "Over the last 2 years who has been the best golfer in the world?" The answer is with out a doubt McIlroy then Donald. Last year Donald won both money titles and a WGC. Granted he hasn't won a major but only 7 people have in that period.

I'd like to see Rory, Luke, Tiger battle it out for #1 next year. Whoever plays the best golf gets the most points. It's as simple as that.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Louis Oosthuizen join that party either as a #1 contender

I understand people want a major winner as the #1 ranked golfer, but I never understood the attitude about Luke when he did get to #1. If Luke can get to #1 without the extra points he would have received from winning a major, then that just shows how much better he played than everyone else throughout the year. Why couldn't the major winners scrape together enough points to overtake him? They just didn't play as well as he did.
If he does that again, more power to him and he'll have deserved it. I doubt he'll be able to jump Rory without winning a major or two though.

Numbers can lie. You're not taking into account that it's Tiger effing Woods. You should times that 4 by 10.

This.

It annoys me that people take being world #2 out on Luke Donald, like he has done something wrong or undeservedly took that position. The poor bloke is just going out there and playing good golf and some nerd with a calculator says he is second best in the world, not his fault.

IMO he is a thoroughly deserved #2 as the above stats show. If he won 12 tournaments in a year and finished second in every major would people still say he doesn't deserve to be #1 because he didn't win a major???
