I thought I would ask.  Anyone else see guys show up to the range consistently in golf attire, shoes included even though it doesn't appear they are warming up to go out and play?   I see plenty of guys that show up to the range as if they are heading to the course only to see them toss their bags in their car and drive off.  Now, it's certainly possible they are playing a course not too far away that has a crappy range and just wanted to use a decent one for warm up, but I see quite a few guys show up to the range with a staff bag with their name on it in great looking clothes, then appear to head home after 40 minutes.

I tend to hit the range in whatever I am wearing as long as it's comfortable and affords me range of motion.  I suppose this thread isn't for the country clubbers because I am sure dress code is in effect there.  I certainly don't think it's disrespectful to show up in clothes other than golf clothes.

I should also point out that I always see some people show up only in gym attire.  Is there anyone else out there that does this as well?

Maybe my range is just weird.

How do you know they're not headed for the course?? If I know a course has no range or a lousy range, I go to my local driving range and warm it up in whatever I plan to wear to play. Even when I'm not playing, I wear golf shoes to the range...just about any other shoe I've tried to wear is hell on my feet, so why would I wear anything other than my golf shoes to hit. Same goes for wearing khakis or shorts (same as I would for the course)...uncomfortable for me to play in jeans and I'm not about to show up in gym clothes. For me it's as easy to put on golf related attire to go to the range as it is a pair of jeans and a tee shirt....not sure why that would bother anyone.

I'm not a member of a club so I have to go to public ranges before I play rounds; my nearest is a stand-alone range so I often see people going fully attired for play and then disappearing after 50 balls - including me

I guess I should have prefaced with I see some people that I know are NOT playing a round later and have not just come from the course, but love to look like a tour pro and love to chop it up with other people on the range.  I guess this isn't that weird, you are going to have those types of people all over the place.

I thought the gym attire only was a weird thing.  Or the guy that always hits balls barefoot.  I guess I was just curious if people felt the NEED to put on golf attire to hit the range or if they always HAD to wear something to the range.  In other words, to WRXer's have odd range attire habits?

When I'm not playing a round, I generally wear cargo shorts, golf polo and golf shoes. It's quite chilly at the moment(6*C-10*C) so I've added a wind proof short sleeve.

Even if I had a £300 golf outfit I wouldn't wear it to the range - it's practice not a fashion show.

i used to wear shorts and a t shirt to the range at a local higher end course around here and was told i have to wear a collared shirt on the range. the course is really nice, but the range leaves a lot to be desired.

Look at it this way, would you show up for a Golf lesson in gym attire? The axiom; Practice like you play may be the driving factor in people using the range in Golf attire.

I generally practice after work, so golf shirt and slacks. On the weekends we have a great local range and during the warm months its a tee shirt and gym shorts. After a couple of hundred balls its hot. They have a shower there which is great. I know they all appreciate it. Lol

If I'm just going to a range to practice, I'm wearing mesh shorts and a t-shirt. The guys dressing up for their medium bucket make me laugh.

If its a really nice course with a range, I will wear golf attire, if its a stand alone range, shorts and a t-shirt.

i am a member of a range that is part of a course. i tend to go in gym shorts and a tee shirt. sometimes i feel a little under-dressed but i dont give it much thought

Different strokes for different folks.  I personally think jeans (I'm assuming that's what you meant) are much less comfortable for any sport, whether to play or practice.  If I knew I was hitting the range only then cargo shorts or warm-up pants would be more appealing to me than bball shorts (too loose/baggy) or jeans (too heavy, stiff, etc).

If i go when at work i wear my Golf shirt and dress pants, if i go other times I wear shorts and t shirt. I am here to practice not play golf.

Yes, I have and my instructor had no issues.  I practice at the range to work on my game...not to try to look like I'm playing a round of golf.

Exactly.  This topic has been discussed at length before and I'm always intreguied by the various answers.  

Honestly...use your best judgement.   If you don't feel comfortable wearing something at the range or wonder if it's in question at a specific course or range (dress code), then be conservative.   Otherwise, who cares...next someone will say I should be dressed up when running to get groceries.

I have been to the range everyday for the last five days and i honestly could not tell you one thing anyone was wearing.

i basically never wear mesh shorts in public, unless working out, because mostly they look tacky and done have pockets.  So when i head to the range i wear shorts and the next logical step is wear something breathable, lightweight, etc.... I have prob 10 pairs of those types of shorts, they are golf shorts!  Top wise, i may wear a T-Shirt, but, I generally want something that is again lightweight and breathable.  Typically my workout shirts are dirty/i limited supply so  i use only to workout in, so i wear the next best thing.. a golf shirt.  Now, I may not tuck in my shirt or what not but i generally will wear golf shorts and a golf shirt.

Winter is a different story.

Shoe wise, i think hitting balls on the range without golf shoes is stupid.  Feet, posture, etc. are a integral part of the swing.  Shoes can impact your height, posture, traction, etc.  So  I always wear golf shoes.

Golf shirt, slacks, and some True PHX is a typical day at the office...it's also a typical day at the range.  I'm not playing dress-up, just wearing what's comfy.

Usually jeans/shorts/sweater/tshirt.  Just whatever I'm wearing at the time I guess.

But I NEED to practice in my golf shoes.

Muni-who cares?  Wear what you want, if I am hitting on mats its gym shoes, grass then golf shoes
High end public or private, then I wear golf attire.


Much like the "jeans thread" this topic can go on forever and there will never be a consensus.  IMO dress for the venue.  Muni, vs. upscale public, vs private.  Most Muni's I have played just require you wear a shirt and some pants, if you want to wear jeans and a T-shirt then fine.  If you are playing a private club then you should honor the dress code which they will certainly have.

I live next to a muni, I will show up wearing whatever, I have a corporate membership at a private club, yesterday when I went to the range I wore corduroys and a polo.  The dress code at the private club is No Denim and a collard shirt.

No right answer, some ranges have dress codes, others don't.

For a lot of people, what they wear to work can easily pass for golf attire and they bring the golf shoes to keep the other ones from getting scuffed or grass stained.

Generally speaking the younger you are the more casual you dress.  This thread could have just as easily been started by someone asking why some people go to the range dressed like they're at the gym.

I don't care what people wear to the range, either way.  What bothers me more is when a range has a policy but does not enforce it or worse is selective about enforcement.

I tend to wear polos/spikes to the range, not only are they usually better with temperature control, I hate swinging in normal tennis shoes.
