Just curious about what others think about Furyk and his promotion of this energy drink, especially when the FDA just announced this product has been linked to 13 deaths over the past three years.  Another brand was also just blamed for the death of a 14 year old girl and the entire product line has gotten a lot of negative press in recent months about health dangers. Every time I see that huge logo on his hat and seeing his endorsement commercials I wonder why he couldn't find another product/company to promote and whether or not he is aware of these issues.  Anyone else have an issue with his choice of product promotion?

13 deaths in 3 years from drinking 5 Hour Energy, so you have an issue with him promoting it? About 600 people die every three years from food allergies. 15 of those deaths were from peanuts last year. So about 45 people die every three years from peanuts. More people die from eating peanuts in one year than die in 3 years from drinking 5 Hour Energy.

Be glad he does not promote Planters Peanuts!!

Nope. Not in the least.
Apparently 1 bottle (well 1 tiny bottle) had about the equivalent of 1 16oz coffee's worth of caffeine. There must be more to it than that though.

Anyways, what about all those golfers sponsored by multinationals and investment companies, that cause havoc with the world's financial markets and helped cause the economic downturn or whatever it is mopey college kids and the unemployed complain about.
What about Army sponsorship in NASCAR (which is ending soon however)? How many people the army kill?
How about Rory and the Jumeirah group? The middle east boom has been built on the back of ill-treated migrant labour from Asia. How about human rights records in Dubai?

It's a pretty exhaustive list. Think Furyk's sponsor deals are probably on the nice side of things, all things considered.

The people that died from energy drinks (not just 5-Hour Energy) OD'd on caffeine and/or Taurine by drinking too many of them in a short period of time. There were probably a lot more deaths by alcohol poisoning on college campuses during that same 3 year period. Also, more people probably died of liver failure due to OD-ing on acetaminophen (Tylenol), it is the #1 cause of acute liver failure.

I wouldn't get a hard on about it. Viagra/Cialis kills more people per year and they still do plenty of advertising in golf and on the tour.

The real problem is why doesn't someone come up with a 6 hour energy? That's a 1/4 of the day. Seems more appropriate to me. Plus it's one hour more than 5. You could sell it for the same price so it's like getting one hour for free.

Likely caffeine, but also related to the actions of the resulting ingestion of too much caffeine.  Just like the cigarette industry, I believe years from now that caffeine will also be uncovered as along term poison.....

Back to Furyk.....If he ingested 5 hour energy,as indicated in his commercials, perhaps it single handedly made him more nervous especiallty coming down the stretch- when he blew up.

all i know is 1 works for me on those late night travel trips in the car......now if you kick back 6 in a row on a constant basis i'm sure some damage will come eventually, and i still don't get the connection to golf. maybe cycling or some other high energy sport - i just know i wouldn't want a buzz trying to golf......it's hard enough.

I don't know why I laughed from your post. You mention not getting a hard on about it and then the next thing you talk about is Viagra/Cialis.

Agreed, his performance down the stretch in tournaments this year (including the Ryder Cup) reinforces the perception that this is one of the most illogical endorsements ever.

Why would a golfer take a stimulant in the first place.

IIRC, 5 Hour Energy has approx. the same caffeine as one large (500ml.) cup of coffee. The rest of the stuff in there is (according to the interwebs)
  • Niacin 30 mg — 150% of the RDA
  • Vitamin B6 40 mg — 2000% of the RDA
  • Folic acid 400 mg — 100% of the RDA
  • Vitamin B12  500 mcg — 8333% of the RDA
  • Energy blend: taurine, glucuronic acid, malic acid, N-acetyl L tyrosine, L-phenylalanine, caffeine, and citicoline. Total amount of blend: 1870 mg. The caffeine content is not specified on the label, but it is supposedly comparable to a cup of the leading premium coffee.
Doubt that any of that will kill you any worse than chugging back two cups of java before a round. It also seems that it does not do much more than drinking two cups of java before the round. Most of those B vitamins (water soluble) will end up in the bush next to the 4th tee when you take the first leak.

I personally wonder if Jim in fact actually "uses the product".

Niacin makes some people flush, I've heard.  I used to drink that swill all the time.

Didn't do jack for me.  I drink a fair amount of coffee though...  I think I'll just stick with that.

I think the essential issue is that an athletic promotes such a controversial product that may harm your body.  If he endorse whatever pays him, he would not be respected.

His finishes at US open and the other tournament (that he finished double bogey on 18) were not impressive.  If he won US open with birdie on 18, then this product would have been hot

The product is pretty hot already.  I'm not so sure that Jim Furyk's Open win would have blown sales off the charts.

But...players endorse whomever pays them.  That's how endorsement deals work...I don't know of any person (who isn't naive) that truly believes any athlete endorses a product just because the love it (in most cases)

In both of those loses the 5Hour energy drink wore off.
Like someone said above "IF" it was a 6 hour energy drink he would have won both of those tournaments.

To bad for Jim that he crashed when the drink wore off :)

Every morning I stop in a convenience store to get my morning coffee.  3 days out of 5 there is a guy there that gets a large cup of coffee and pours it about 1/2 full and adds a handful of sugar packets - he then goes to the counter and adds TWO of those 5 Hour Energy things in the coffee......uses it kinda like creamer.  I guess.  I've always wanted to follow him for an hour or so and see if he's bouncing off the walls of his office.
