I remember the first time I entered a golf store. It was just after I started playing golf and I wanted to buy my first set of clubs.

I tried some drivers and fairways, all of them were black or grey and non had adjustable hosels or any such piffy paffy nonsense. There was talk of a white putter being released soon (sounded preposterous to me) but the idea of a white or multi-coloured driver was unthinkable.

For those of us who don't like long irons there were some 7 woods to try out, and even some fancy looking clubs called 'hybrids' that were becoming more and more popular (although they looked stupid to me).

I looked at the irons, some of them had a 2-iron included, nowadays I'd be lucky to find a set with a 4-iron.

I tried some putters, there were a few funky ones like a '2-ball' but nothing particularly 'spaceshippy'. In the far corner was a weird monstrosity supposedly called a 'Belly Putter'. I believed some older guys often play with them if they have a proven medical condition.

All in all, it was a simpler time. None of the stupid flash nonsense you see nowadays.

You must have gone to pretty terrible golf shop... I stopped playing a 7 wood in maybe 2004 and picked up a hybrid in maybe 2006?  2007?

Adjustable hosel drivers were also out in 2010.... wasnt the 910 release in 2010?

i've been playing since 1958 and i think i've seen and kept up with all the progress in equipment since then..

it's mostly good and the biggest and best changes for me in order of making the biggest difference are 1) the ball..2)the shaft...3) the metal heads..

...come to think of it that's practically the whole ball game!!

only problem now is WHAT to choose!!

I can't believe you got the balls to say that you starting playing in 2010 and say how much the equipment has changed since then. When I started playing in 2000, wound balls were still the norm (The Pro V1 was just on the verge of being released) and some of the golf companies whose clubs were on sale at the time are even in business anymore!!  That's change..

When I started playing back in 1994 at the age of 15, I received a hand-me down set of clubs from my Grandpa.  1970's Jack Nicklaus MacGregor blades (yes, these were true blades!) and a set of persimmon woods.  While that certainly wasn't cutting edge technology at the time, the reality is that the biggest changes in technology occurred from late 90's to the early 2000's.

We went from 200 cc driver heads to 460 cc driver heads and from balata balls to the Pro V1/V1x.  Now that, my friend was a big change.  It had a measurable performance change to my game....I picked up 20-25 yards off the tee.  Everything since that time has been window-dressing....the adjustable stuff is nice but it hasn't had a drastic performance benefit to me.   I could also care less about the color of my clubhead.  Proper fitting is the key these days to any performance gains.

I remember when Ping Eye2's were HUGE (as in large), someone actually decided to make a wood out of something other than wood and a Anser style putter was considered a odd looking oversized game improvement club not a "blade".  I remember with legs on bags were a new awesome innovation and you had a choice of balata or surlyn in multiple compressions.

I was a "club ho" back then as well, did you go with BeCu pings or SS? Hmmm...maybe Apex blades???
Did you go with a 2 iron or a TM cleek?
Did you like the feel of persimmon, laminate or SS, then graphite headed oversize?
Do you like balata, wound surlyn or two piece?
Have you seen those new-fangled 60* LW's like Tom Kite uses?
OMG there is this new invention called a fiberglass shaft...um maybe graphite...whatever that is?

But to think I started in my backyard playing around with my Dad's hickory-shafted clubs, things have change slightly since then.

I agree. No way this is real.  How many sets of irons came with a 2-iron just two years ago?

Come to think of it...the original post might be a fake...even though I started in 2000, 3-PW sets were the norm...never saw a new 2-PW set on sale ever...
