Hi all,

Just wanted some feedback on some old Callway irons.  Which pro x-series do you like?  I'm looking at grabbing a set of either x-14 pros/x-16 pros/x-20 pros.

Right now I'm playing Ping i5s with KBS Tour S and love the look, feel and flight (they do go quite high so might have to reshaft).  Hit my i5s very well, but just wanted to try something a bit different.  Had x-14 pros many years ago and remember liking them, but that was when I was just starting out.

Play to a 7-8 HCP and ball striking is quite good, driving OK, but chipping and putting are inconsistent.  

So which ones do you like (looks, feel, performance, forgiveness, etc.)?  Will the Callys mentioned above feel as soft as my i5s?  I like the "thud" sound of the i5s and how solid they feel when hit right in the middle.  Should I even bother with this experiment or just stick with my i5s?

Thinking about the new 2013 x-forged, but not sure if those will be forgiving enough compared to my i5s.  Curious about trying a forged iron as well.

I have the BB 06 irons..i really like them, but i'm getting new ones in a month (going more players iron). Very consistent, a little big at address, but its very difficult to slice them, (offset is a bit much for me now, turning my slight draw into a big one, as i've worked on bringing my swing more inside.

You can't go wrong with any of the sets you mentioned.  That said, shop around a bit because you might want to find a set with decent upgraded shafts.  I've hit lots of X series Cally irons (still playing 20s) and the stock shafts are usually ill-fitting (at least for me).  There are sets with DG and real Rifles out there but you will have to search a bit.

Yeah, I was kind of leaning towards the 14s or 16s (I even like the older Bertha orig. irons too as a poster mentioned).

I'm not sure any manufacturers make smallish cavity irons that have high forgiveness like the old Callys and Pings!  Seems like if you go smallish cavities like the new i20s, etc., the forgiveness is no where near the old irons.

X-14/ X-14 Pros, I think.   I had a set of X-14's and sold them to my buddy's father who was just taking up the game.  I wish I still had them in a closet somewhere.

I also like the BB06, but the BB line has gone downhill from there.   In fact, I haven't been interested in Callaway irons much recently but I'm really hoping that changes in 2013.   I'm looking forward to seeing the 2013 lineup.

I currently play X-14.  I played with most of the X series irons from Callaway and I didn't find much differences with distance, forgiveness, and ball flight.  I also played with i5s before, I don't think you'll see much differences from i5s either.  Just find a set that appeals to you.

I agree.  I liked the older BB series, not the newer stuff.  All the X series have been great up until the X-24 Hot or whatever.  That was an abomination and an insult to the x series!!!  

Looking fwd to the 2013 line as well...hoping the X hot pros and x forged cbs return Cally to its heydays!

Sorry for bumping a (slightly) older thread but I just gave in to temptation and bought a "very good" set of X-14 Pro Series from Callaway Golf Preowned.   I'm excited about them, especially because it's easy to get length/lie/etc customized through them.

14 pros blow the others away..... there's a decent looking set for $100 + 18 shipping on the bay right now.  Rifle stiff flex.  Won't get much better than that for the price
