i just turned 67 and have been playing golf since i was 12...

i also got as low as a 3 hdcp playing 2-3x a week and am now a 12...

i started with a set that consisted of driver, 3W, 4W and irons  2-P,SW( 1958-late 70s)..

then it became driver, 3W, 5W and irons 3-LW..(late 70s-early 90s)

then it became driver,3W, 5W,7W and irons 4-P,GW,SW,LW..

then it became driver, 3W,5W,7W,9W,11W and irons 6-LW..

then it became driver, 4W, 7W, 4/5/6 hybrid,7 midiron, irons 8-LW...

now i find i can hit the high-lofted FW better than hybrids and have gone back to the 9W to replace the 4/5 hybrid..

...am still giving the 6 hybrid a chance but may replace it with an 11W if it starts misbehaving..

my driver carry is at least 210 yds and my driver ss is  about 90..

anyone else have a similar experience??

My father is 69 and recently carded a 74 on a 6800 yard course.   He's a pretty good player.   He carries a lot of hybrids now but I remember a few years ago he had a Callaway 13 wood.   Back then he said he'd have a 16 wood if they made it.     One of my friends told him he was surprised they made a 13 wood, because of bad luck. Dad thought about it for a few holes and then told me "I wish he hadn't said that.   I never thought of it."   ha ha ha

Hello jm:  I'm 71 and a Filipino/American.  My Dad was born in the PI.  I'm in the same boat.  I play D, 3W, 18* Hybrid, 4-PW, GW, SW, LW, P.   My sons tell me I should dump the 18* and 4 Iron, and get a 3H and a 4H.  I'm a 9 index from the White (Middle) Tees.   My Driver Carry is the same as yours and I hit every club well, but of course yardage is not what it used to be.  I NEVER lose a ball however as I am extremely accurate.  Just not overly long.  Oddly, I have the unusual ability to hit the 18* Hybrid 150 yards - 185 yards. Just wondering if more loft on two Hybrids would make things easier and not have to increase or decrease backswing.

BTW:  We had a house in Greenhills/Rizal.  Our neighbor was Marcos' Daughter.  My Dad had a membership back in the day at Wack Wack.  I never spent much time in the PI but visited about 6 times. We have a HUGE family over there.  I'll just say that my Father who was an Aviation Engineer, built many of the family businesses.  Gentex (General Textiles) was one of them.  I play golf with many Filipinos over here.  We always wonder why there isn't one on the PGA Tour, as much as Filipinos love golf.  I don't speak Tagalog and my Mother was American.  My Father became a citizen many years ago.  Both have since passed away.

greetings from the philippines..you should visit more often as there are many nice new courses here now..

the main reason i switched back to FW vs hybrids is i hit them higher and a bit longer..

i own many hybrids from a 16* 2-H down to a 29* 6-H but i can't seem to hit them as high or as long as my high-lofted woods..

at our age i think we need more clubhead speed to hit hybrids well vs high-lofted woods..

am glad you can hit your 18* hybrid well but if it starts misbehaving you may want consider replacing it with  19* FW..

Just about like yourself. I'm 66 and carried Driver, 3 wd, 2-LW until last year. In our age group you just learned to play a 2 iron growing up. Always was proud of my long irons. Decided to replace the 2 iron. Tried numerous hybrids. For me, at least, they are NOT irons and they are NOT FWs. Different animals. No longer interested in them. Got an old FW out of a bag in the basement (TM Burner 5). Hmmmmm. So I got a demo 5 wd (I20) just like my 3 with PX 5.5 shaft. Well, I was impressed. Bought one and now I'm carrying it more than the 3 wd. Funny, I can hit the 3 off the tee and the deck but the distance difference is not huge compared to the 5. Since I use driver ( 215-220 carry) off the tee on most par 4s the 5 wd is a good club to replace the 2 iron. I like playing 3-PW, 50*, 56* and 60*. If I left the 3 wd and the 60 out of the bag I'd really never miss them. I can play them, but I really don't need them that much. The five is great for all the old 2 iron shots and more. Also, thinking about a 58* to do the dual 56/60 work. Less clubs-less weight.

Interesting.  I'm only 36 yrs old but have a slower swing (86 mph on avg with driver) and just got an RBZ 22* 4h and have no problems launching it high with about 185 of carry.  Senior flex. My ping k15 5w is 19* and I hit it 190-210 depending on conditions.  Senior flex also.

.....glad to hear you hit your hybrids well...

i think it's most probably because you have the correct shaft for your swing..

i may try that sometime myself--ie--put senior flex shafts on my hybrids--if my FW start misbehaving!!
