I clean my clubs like  once a month but dirty clubs don't affect  me at all except for woods and my putter, but neither of those gr very dirty anyways. I guess I'm the minority here.

A little saliva mixed in with some Copenhagen Long Cut then wiped off with my Players Towel keeps my clubs clean after every shot!

I remember playing with a very good junior at my old club, and he with a short pitch and complained that it want biting like he wanted to.  His wedge looked like it had never been cleaned lo. I told him to clean the grooves out with a tee, and hit the shot again. it hit the brakes hard, and he looked like I had just cured cancer haha.

Even if it doesnt have a noticeable difference, I prefer to play with clean clubs to reduce variables, and I just hate looking at dirty clubs. I clean them on the range too after every 3 or 4 balls.

Does anyone play with club faces full of mud, grass, etc?

I can't hardly look at a filthy club let alone play one.

Mine are cleaned after every round and I keep face clean while on course, with a wet towel and a small brush....clean grooves grab best.

Yes everyone plays better with clean equipment a dirt film on the face of the club will play a role on control and smash factor same with grips then of course dirt in the grooves cuts down on imparted spin

If you clean them, without the dirt and grass the swing weight changes. :tease:

It bothers me when my towel is not wet and I can't adequately clean my clubs after each shot.  I figure the grooves are thee for a reason.  I have scuffed plenty of balls with mid and short irons and spun many balls on the greens due to grooves.  I end up paying the bag boy for his efforts after my round at resort courses but he really has NO work to do!

The young fella here is a scratch (with a swing video up on this site to verify he can play), so that's not it.

I'm with Sean, I think it's just a kid thing, he probably doesn't think about it and just goes and plays.

Cleaning clubs depends on whether you want the ball to spin or not.  Not so much on a driver / 3-wood, usually on an iron.  If dirt and grass reduce backspin, they probably reduce the effects of curvature too.  So, perhaps not cleaning a driver / 3-wood is a ... benefit ... maybe ...

Here in the Philippines, practically all courses make it mandatory to avail of a caddy (except perhaps for Junior golfers who are allowed to carry their own bag) so the clubs are always wiped down after each shot;  not by the player but by the caddy.  We take it for granted sometimes but after each round, the clubs are always clean.  The only thing left for me to do is to clean my grips on a regular basis so that they stay tacky.  It also allows me to spend quality time with my clubs. :D If I am playing in the US though, I always have a damp towel to clean it up after each shot.  It doesn't take a whole lot of time and gives me peace of mind that the condition of the club had nothing to do with that godawful hosel rocket I just managed to execute. :)

Have to admit I don't get around to the grips very often, as in a seasonal thing, but absolutely clean the clubhead and grooves after/before a shot.
In addition to the possible impact on the ball, it doesn't suit my eye to see a patch of green on the club when addressing the ball.

I'm hoping that someone else takes care of that for you more than several times a year.

Never used to do it too regularly but I am going to start since I got new irons. I actually have a toothbrush in my bag to clean the grooves but I find it takes too much time between shots and everything to always clean my clubs. Generally I will wipe it down if it looks dirty or there is dirt on the face but I don't check the grooves etc.

For those of you with forged irons never put them away wet or dirty and you will never deal with rust. Put them up dirty regularly and rust will start before you know it.

That's mainly due to the fertilizer in soil left in grooves.

True that the nitrogen in fertilizer will speed up oxidation but it is not the only thing in play. The PH level of the soil and water used to irrigate the course also bear trace minerals that will eat the chrome away and it does not have to be in the groves it will eat away on the falt of the face, bounce, hozzle as well, Dirt is made up of H2O, and various minerals most of which cause galvinistic oxidation on chrome and carbon steel

Must be a younger person thing. I make sure the face is semi clean, and the grooves on wedges/low irons are pretty clean, but other than that I don't really worry about keeping the club clean. It just doesn't bother me that much I guess.

Does throwing my irons into and then retrieving them from a pond count as cleaning?

If so, I clean mine a lot.

Played with a guy last year whose irons were so dirty that you couldn't even see the grooves!  I'll bet the crud alone must have added 4 points to the swingweight of each club.
