Do any of you play better when cleaning your clubs before you play?

I don't think I've ever played a good round, relative to my cap, without cleaning/wiping/brushing my clubs beforehand.

My clubs are cleaned before I play and my grips are cleaned once a week with window cleaner.

I like my clubs clean period.

My house feels better if it's kept clean, my car drives better when it's newly washed, my clubs feel better when clean, my girlfriend is much better if she's dirty.

I keep my clubs cleaner than my room. Looking down on a dirty club just somehow messes with me haha.

Lol, so no one here has played with dirty clubs?

Maybe that's why I'm a 22 capper and you guys aren't.

I like wiping down my clubs after a round.  Sometimes there are ballmarks on the sweet spot and it helps you relive that one good shot of the round or that one ugly ballmark off the top in my case :stink:

We don't represent a huge percentage of the golfing public. If you look at the threads about staff at courses cleaning our clubs 90% of the griping is because we're going to do it properly, including scraping the dirt out of the grooves, at home later on. So the wipe down doesn't cut it which is why a lot of us would just as well say "no thanks".

So yeah, most of us clean our clubs between shots and after our rounds, unlike some of my buddies who haven't cleaned them since they bought em!

To the OP: I played with one guy this summer whose clubs were filthy. After about the sixth hole, and getting to know him a little bit. I couldn't contain myself any longer:

"Do you ever clean your clubs?" I asked.
"Yep, once a year, whether they need it or not." He responded with a smile.

I wipe off my clubs after every shot. I have a little pocket bristle brush that I use. I clean my grips every two weeks, and occasionally put a coat of wax on my driver head. I also clean the shafts of all my clubs. You'd be amazed at how much dirt they collect. Also, by cleaning your grips on a regular basis you can really extend their life, and keep them nice and tacky.

I clean my clubs after every round with a tooth brush and soapy water. I clean the grips every other round. I'll put a coat of wax on the heads on my driver, woods and hybrids about four times a year. I'll wax my shaft several times a year too.
On the course my clubs get wiped off after every shot. If needed I'll brush out the grooves with a small brush I carry.

I know I would play worse with dirty clubs. I wouldn't be able to focus on my shot looking down at a dirty club at address.

And a nylon bristle brush...make sure no water gets down the shaft. :-)

ps: if they are Winn grips, don't do the above, just get some rubbing alcohol and a clean cotton cloth. Put some of the alcohol on the cloth and rub the grips GENTLY.

They are all pretty easy. Personally I stay away from cord grips.

I've never played with them dirty so i wouldn't be able to answer your question.  But I would assume, yes.  I would be better with clean clubs.

I wipe down face after each shot. I mean who likes hitting with dirty clubs? Unless you need an excuse for a "s" word.

A towel that has some decent coarseness to it can get into the groves a bit, but I always carry a brush as well if some dirt gets caked into the groves.  The spin is very unpredictable when the club isn't clean.  If you have sand on the face, it could spin more, dirt in the grooves, it will knuckle.  I mean, don't get me wrong, I don't think it's saving me 6 shots a round, but if I don't clean my clubs, I might as well stop wearing a glove, or kneeling down to read putts.  It's just a half a** way to go about playing golf.

Never really been obsessive about clean clubs. Shot 88 in tournaments with clean clubs, shot 67 with clubs that hadn't been cleaned in a month. Doesn't bother me either way.

I clean my clubs after every round too, and during play as best as possible. Epecially the grooves of my wedges which is very important to me with one of those nylon/bronze combo brushes. Also I keep a long handled plastic brush in my bag to occasionally clean the bottoms of my shoes if needed.

I keep half of my big towel wet and clean the club after each shot with a tee and a wipe from the towel. Always wipe my grips and hands before a shot, especially in the summer

I too wipe my irons off after every shot. I have one wet and one dry towel on the bag just for that. :)

If I need to, a tee is used to get any stubborn stuff out of the grooves. Grips are cleaned prior to every round. I'm just weird, or so my wife tells me.  :D
