I just joined the Golfsmith Handicap Tracker website. I put my 5 most recent scores in. I averaged around a 78, but my handicap index is 0.7. Is that what it is supposed to be, or should it be 6.0?

I think it will take your single lowest score if you only put in 5 scores.  Strikes me as very odd that you are averaging in high 70's and just now getting a hcp and figuring out how it calculates...just saying someone who is a single digit handicap usually knows how the calculations work.

The system doesn't take your average score and base if off that. It basically calculates it to what your potential is

When you get 20 scores in it should be more accurate.
If you have more older scores - enter those too. Just make sure they have the correct course/slope ratings and have the correct date as well.
Players usually average around 2-3 shots above their Handicap.

For completeness and accuracy, the above is the definition of the 'differential' for a given round of golf (once you change 0.96 to 1.0 and recognize that 'ESC' is meant to be your actual golf score after ESC adjustments). Note that 'par' has nothing to do with it.

Once you have 20 recorded scores your index will be 96% of the average of the best 10 (of your last 20) differentials (recalculated 2x per month). With only 5 scores your index is the simply 96% of your best differential. The appropriate table is already stated in this thread.

Just to add to the above, until you are given a HC and your GHIN number no longer states NH, you will have to input Gross scores as your ESC.  After that input your scores adjusted to your handicap and ESC table below:

Handicap    Maximum Score
0-9                  Double Bogey
10-19                 7
20-29                 8
30-39                 9
40 or more        10

It might not be gross scores that should be submitted.  Prior to a handicap being issued you are assumed to have the maximum index for your gender, and the resulting course handicap may require ESC adjustment per the above table if you have a blow up hole or two!
