Yep, it's been fun for the last 5 or 6 season but I'm pretty sure I'm going back to old faithfull next year, not in the spring, but as soon as the warm weather sets in.

I've been playing in the cold and wet a lot lately, and while there's an obvious downside, today, admittedly a lousy day with the driver, it was a lot of fun to have to hit from 170 yards out half the time, even after a semi decent drive.

I've thought about this before but I've been worried having an honest cap.  Truth is, right now I play one event a year, and we submit a cap, I can get by with persimmon there, or whatever seems appropriate, it's not like there's a rule enforcing equipment selection, and it's just a fun event.  I figure as long as I don't play exclusively persmimmon all year then pull out the 460 on every hole for any cap events I'm in I will rest easy.   I'm only interested in entering any real (AM) event in the open category anyhow, so it's not gonna matter what I played or am gonna play if I ever get there, as long as I'm good enough, which I aint yet anyhow, so...

Yep, I'm looking forward to losing 15 yards or so on my drives lol,  how mamy times do you hear that

My experience is only a 5-10% distance loss compared to an equal length 460cc Ti driver.  If that doesn't put you more than 2 clubs further away from the hole, I say go for it.

I learned with a persimmon driver a friend lended to me.

I hit my strightest drives with it. I was sad to have to give it back. Never been as accurate since.

I have a Mizuno TP persimmon 3 wood that I sometimes use.  Drove onto the green of a short dogleg 275 yard par 4 with it last week.  It was glorious.

Hogans, Pennas, Powerbuilts and Macgregors from the 70's and 80's are plentiful on ebay for some very affordable prizes. I'm fond of Pennas, personally. Thanks for noticing my "Weak Pour" guys. But tonite I am pouring a little stronger as I mourn 2 losses in the golfing world.

1st, the loss of a man, no a great man, in one Jim Flick, who helped my all time favorite golfer,  the Great Jack Nicklaus  continue his march to infamy after losing his long time instructor Jack Grout, .
I am sure that this has hit many of the PGA Tours finest hard

And second, and although not a serious a loss to the golfing world, but a personal loss   of a great friend, and a true competitor.


Today at approximately 10:42 AM on the second tee,  my beloved Macgregor Tourney Tommy Armour Driver suffered a broken neck, and although it was rushed to my car after the round it was no use. It will be remembered fondly by me, and will always hold a place in my heart.

I have decided that when playing those courses where the starters, marshalls, and rangers suddenly feel impowered by their new directive--all seniors MUST play it forward--that I will just LFF with persimmons. While I understand the philosophical underpinnings of the "Play it Forward" Movement, I fail to understand why it should be enforced 24/7/365. I can see it under crowded conditions, but when the closest groups are 3 holes in front or behind you, it kinda bugs me to have someone older than my 58 years, race up to the tee in his cart--doing his best impression of a 'gran-prix slide'--in order to remind me to play the senior tees.
So, I guess they can tell me where and when, but not what to play. Might as well enjoy the sound of a solid shot, the 'Zen' of it all, a lot more uplifting than the sound of  'one hand clapping,' Grasshopper.

<sup>That's rediculous.  Not all seniors are created equal, some are still knocking it out there with the flat bellies...and some can't hit past the shadow off their.....The tees you play should be based on your personal ability, after all you paid their green fee, you should get to play your tees.  I've had a couple of courses here in the UK tell me that and it really pisses me off.  Especially when the back tees are 6200 yds to start with and they want you to play the tees of the day which might be all of 5900 yds.  That play it forward deal is a bad idea, the charts I saw had to be based on club distances from 20 years ago.  Their driver distances don't match up with the approach club/distances.  I've been beat about 5 times in matches over here by a 60 something brit who doesn't hit the ball more than about 220 off the tee, but will hit the green or just miss from 200 yds or closer, then gets up and down or one putts 85% of the time.  Very frustrating when you play from the forward tees, lose all your distance advantage, then proceed to get your a** kicked by somebodies granfather.  I'm 49, will be 50 in March and still hit the ball of the tee a very solid 260+ yds, can even poke it out there 290+ on really good days.  The real kicker is I haven't lost an inch with my irons, I've swapped out my 1,2, 3 irons for hybrids because I don't lauch the long irons high anymore.  But from 4 iron down--I'm good.

Back to the original topic, If you want a really sweet, hi - performance set of persimmons...look for MacGregor Jack Nicklaus Super Eye 'O Matics.  The driver is phenomenal (945 head with a modified diamond point super insert), they were made in 1986, and have the Brunswick Propel shaft in them.  You can really move the modern ball out there with that thing...10.5 degrees loft and about 43.5 inches long.  A few years ago I hit a Callaway HX Tour 295 yds with one of those after playing all day in a tournament.  Had a great ball striking day and went back out to see what the difference was between Ti 460 and persimmon.  Persimmon flew higher and was about 10-15 yds shorter...obviously Ti being more forgiving.  When your on, your on...when you aren't is another story.</sup>

Had to replace myi "Lost Forever Macgregor Tourney Tommy Armour" after its accident (broken neck) so I picked up the pictured driver and while I was at it also added another 4 wood to the collection. Driver cost me $30 and $15 for the 4 wood.

I have most of the haig's from my set, but the wrapping on the driver came loose.  I sort of am hoping to get a replacement on ebay, but I might have to go for a whole set.  I'm a little warry of mixing and matching woods,

I live in England now and am enjoying playing some of the UK courses such as Sunningdale, Woodhall Spa, Celtic Manor, Woburn, The Belfry, London Golf Club, and The Grove...just to name a few.  Mananged to get all 27 of my MacGregor persimmon woods, display rack, and MacGregor Centennial leather golf bag shipped here in one piece...not a scratch on them to boot.  I was truly amazed. That JN Super Eye O Matic is a beast, I'm thinking about taking it and a JN Tour Eye O Matic three wood out for a stroll with some Mizuno MP-67s just to see what I can do...if anything.  I saw some Maxfli Ht-100s on ebay for a good price...still thinking.  I once shot 74 with ONE of those on a glorious day in North Carolina,  Aug 1993.  Sometimes I think golf was simpler back then.

Are your Haigs persimmon or strato bloc laminated?  If they are laminated, I can probably find a set that will match up for you. I know there are several Haig woods in the "niles Hoard" I bought.

I do not want to go back to persimmon and blades full time, but I did it a couple of times this year and would like to think I will do it more next year. I just bought a "practice" MacGregor Jack Nicklaus Murfield driver and was hitting it on the range last week. A gent in his earlier 60's who was hitting the most godawful sounding driver(clank)down the range turned around and asked me if i was hitting a persimmon driver, beacuse of the sound.

Heck I might buy a Jones bag and start to walk 9 with my classics when it gets warmer next spring.

I was on the golf course less than 7 times this year I think, i was that busy with other things. My goal next year is to play atleast once or twice at a Historic Ross course in my neck of the woods, which I should be able to get on, carrying a classic bag.  Walking those holes ( on a warm summer morning) with the old gear like I did as a kid will be a great retreat. I look fwd to it.  Great thread by the way!

If you live in Minnesota, take it to Stan's Golf Club Hospital.  He'll fix it so you can use it again.  He is a magician.

OK today I decided on a whim to take out the persimmons and play 9 at my club course where I have never used persimmon before. Left the blades at home but did take the Mizzy's instead of the AP1's to get the forged feel.

Well I ended up playing 11 holes due to time but parred 6 of them. I played from the white tees which is about 6300 yds. As the round progressed I hit the JN Murfield much more solid particularly if I used a good tempo full swing(funny how that works). My drives on 8,10 and 11 ended up in the area my 909 goes... 240ish in the fairway. Took the persimmon fairways and the 4 wood was a blast. I could see it replacing my 21* hybrid.

Don't know if I want to do it all the time but I sure want to do more often.

The funny thing about your 4 wood, the loft probably is about the same as your 21 hybrid.

hey tx, ya they are Haigs from ~83, they say "the Haig" on them like the irons IIRC.  No idea what the makeup is on 'em.  Nice ordinary clubs.

Season is getting closer . Just starting to think about golf again around these parts.  I half expect my scores to improve, kind of along the same lines as takng 3w from the tee, which seems to have gotten pretty fashionable these days.

yikes, last post in wrong thread, oh well.

My old Haig driver is missing some wood, but the head is still tight on the shaft.  I'm gonna try my hand at relashing it and see how long it lasts.  I was hitting the 3 and 5 wood on the range today, forgot how mice it is to hit a wooden head.

Well I've got the 3 and 5 wood back in the bag, been hitting them on the range, it's a total scream, It's been ages since I hit those clubs.  They manage to have some "hood" at address without sitting closed like some of the new metal woods I've seen do, very refreshing.  I'ver rarely bagged a 5w.  It's a great club to have if you can hit the darn thing straight lol.  Looks promising on the range so far.

Driver is broken but I"m gonna try someone local to relash it, or do it myself if I cant' get it done.  The head isn't actually loose, just some compromised wood.  I feel pretty strongly that maybe some glue and a new lash will probably get it through the season.

I probably should give another 3 metal a try, but to say I never bonded with the one I had is an understatement.  It was pretty cool off of the tee for playing it safe.  Beyond that we never saw eye to eye.  I'm giving up potential yards going back to thge 3w, but I can make it up cause I can actually take a swing.
