Those of us who know mat562's background (and many of us who have been around for a while do) are inclined to take his word over yours.

He played amateur golf in the UK at a very high level with some very good players and is someone I would consider an expert on the subject. I don't know how long you have been officiating, but I suspect it either isn't very long or you made it up.

I have officiated for many years at international amateur events and am on the Tournament Committees of my County and England Golf (formerly the English Golf Union). Given the clear wording given in the 'Guidance to Players' by the R&A I would be interested in seeing any evidence of what you claim.
I don't know what the attitude was in the rest of the many 'euro' countries

Funnily enough, our club champion is called Sun Mountain. So he is OK either way.

Roll out to one of the hundred AJGA events each year and you'll see those kids all have their names embroidered on their bags.  It helps the college coaches identify them ;)

Not a disqualifier.

A “low handicap” golfer wishing to retain Amateur Status may not:
11. Display any advertising on his golf bag, bag cover or hold-all bag other than the name of the
manufacturer of that item and/or his own name.

This statement tells you it is OK to display the name of the manufacturer and your name on your bag...it's telling you that advertising on bag, bag cover, and hold-all bag is a no no...

As easy as it is for golf bags/clubs to walk away from the course (without the player), I'm tempted to put my name on everything I have!!

To add to this in the UK one of the county (think state) golf associations where I used to live specifically forbids names to be on golf bags

Surrey Golf Union is the one, probably others as well

As an example here is an entry form for one of their elite events

Manufacturer of golf bag must not show, either?  That sentence is poorly written.

Indeed.  Name of the golfer without the manufacturer is OK?

I think the purpose of their rule (however stupid it is) is to absolutely avoid any allegation such a player is receiving inappropriate sponsorship, because they fear their reputation might be damaged if someone was found in violation of amateur status at their event.

I'm clutching at straws here, personally I think the rule is BS

What if your name appears on a luggage tag or bag tag?

Geez, a bunch of the senior golfers at my club have their names sewn onto their golf bags... I'm talking about 18 handicap guys.   They just order the bag from the club, and one of the options is to get your name on it.   Cart bags, not staff bags.   I never think a thing about it except I don't think I'd do it.

There always is the practical side to having your name on your bag (particularly when your store your clubs at the course) I have my name on my towels, inside my shoes, umbrella  and of course bag tag etc. Just makes life easier when you lose something around the club as it finds it's way back to your bag.

So, wouldn't USGA bag tags be illegal to have on one's bag? It technically advertises for the USGA, and isn't product of the manufacturer of the bag. lol

Such a ridiculous rule!

for the matter, would not having the schools logo on someones bag be in violation of the rule?

All competitors in English National events (eg the Brabazon) are issued with bagtags bearing their name.

I am awaiting a call from the county secretary.

Good follow-up!  I suspect that it's more of a club's condition of entry, just like age.  They could have a condition that only permitted right-handed players to enter.  Not really a Rules of golf issue.

Yes, if I wanted my name on my bag, that is the approach I'd take at that event.  :)

Is there some debate that having your name embroidered on your golf bag disqualifies you?  It does not - nor does it upgrade your status from Amateur to Professional.

At the Callaway Junior Worlds event last year at Torrey Pines almost every single bag was embroidered with the players name - and that is several hundred players

90% of NCAA golf teams have the players name on the bags.

Maybe I missed the gist of the topic ? :)

There shouldn't be - the actual rules of amateur status in question was posted way back in post #19.  It's hard to tell but the current branch of the discussion seems to be about the rules of a particular county golf association in the UK.

No problem - at least you asked.  That's a huge improvement over most :-)

sorry if I have been confusing everyone, there is nothing in the actual rules of amateur status that prevents you from putting your name on your bag, so long as the manufacturer of said bag isn't paying you to do it.

I was merely trying to point out that in the UK there are cases of this not being considered acceptable, for reasons as yet unknown.

I have just spoken to the Surrey County Secretary. It was an oversight. The condition predated the 2004 rules change and hadn't been picked up. He said 'thanks' and that it would be removed from the entry form shortly.

I would be interested in seeing any other examples of this still in existence in the UK.

Simple and understandable explanation - I wonder how many other similar rules or conditions exist and cause consternation?
