[Johnny Hack]

Would like to hear what everyone who is playing "Classic Clubs" (steel shafted persimmon and forged blades pre 1990) is playing. Some may play what they consider to be in this catagory that are post 1990 and that is O K too. If you want to include pics, please do.

Here's what ended up in my bag most often this season:

Toney Penna Mod JS - easily my favorite out of the 20 or so persimmon drivers I've tried, though my Cleveland TC15 comes close. Refinished it and left it natural blonde.

Toney Penna 3-wood and 4-wood - refinished, 3-wood blonde and 4-wood cognac brown.

Hogan Apex II 2-PW / Hogan PC 2-PW - I kept switching between these every couple of weeks. Apex 4 shafts on both. Late on the season I brought out a 2-iron that I had forgotten about, Apex II with a Vector 4 shaft. Great for those low burners off the tee.

Hogan Apex PC sand wedge - I really like sharp leading edge, I feel like I can get under the ball even on some really tight lies. Works great out of the sand too.

Hogan HB-1 putter - The least classic part of my set, but it works. Eventually I need to get my hands on some bulls eyes or some classic Wilsons.


So mostly stuff from the late 70's and 80's.

Louisville Golf F2 15.5 Degree Driver, Niblick 4 Wood, K2 Utility Wood, (one of only 55 in existence made from a Wood Bros Kool Kat turning) Niblick 11 Wood and Niblick 15 Wood. Hogan Radial 4-PW. Still looking for a classic wedge. Arnold Palmer Original blade putter or Bullseye.

Woods do have graphite shafts, however!

My backup/fun bag.  The wedges are new, but technically are a 1988 design, so I am counting them.  These are kind of a wolf in sheep's clothing because I've used modern shafts and grips to fit them to me.  I usually play Driver, 3W, 4W, 3-PW, 54°, 60°, putter.

1962 Wilson Arnold Palmer.  When I got it, it had been horribly rechromed, so I decided to have fun with it and have Kevin Colbert/West Coast PVD apply a PVD rainbow finish.  I saved the original shaft and grip and redid the putter with a YHSF shaft.  I found a vintage Head Speed shaft label to put on the shaft.  The grip is updated with a conforming underlisting, Wilson leather wrap with silver piping, and a period correct end cap.

I am kind of a Wilson collector so no surprise my main bag is a Wilson setup that I have played with for many years.

I've got a bunch of stuff, but this is probably how I'd go in a retro round o'golf...

I have a few dozen Maxfli HT100s I could use, also.  

Too bad it's getting cold.

I also have a TW800 set of Golden Rams, 1/3/5 woods that would be worth use.  May have a couple similar such sets, can't remember what all I have lying around.  Could also substitute my 3-PW TW276 Golden Rams, with a Frequency Matched 1 iron, for the Vibration Matched set above.

Which makes me think about pulling out the 78 Staffs I have lying around, get them regripped and playable...

Please consider placing your Wilson DBAP putter up with your woods instead of down in the "clatter zone" with your wedges.

My driver doesn't qualify, although currently it's just a ~300 mizuno t-zoid.  Rest of the bag is Haig's 1-sw from 83, the ones pictured left.  pw is 51*.  They have a square toe,  and I think the drilled through hosel, and reasonable toe area for a compact blade.  They are pretty forgiving as far as old butterknives go.  Putter is an old Haig very similar to the Wilson 8802.  Wilson owned Hagen back then.

I have the 3 and 5 wood as well, but they aren't in the bag right now.  I had bought the 3 woods, but the windings came off the driver pretty quick.  I had played my grandfathers old Wilson for a while but it broke, so eventually I succumbed and got a 460 head .  It's been fun, but I might go back to gaming persimmon.  Overpowering the course can take some of the fun out of the game.

Fred.  That photo is good enough for a magazine ad or a book on classic persimmon woods. I really like the deck/boardwalk as the setting for the clubs.  Very artistic and professionally done.  Hey, that sounds like a good idea! Seriously, having a coffee table book filled with persimmons, classic or otherwise.  Great job!  Thanks to everyone for their pics as well.  Such a great forum!!!

Neil, thanks for that feedback. I've always been into photography and enjoy posting good pics on this site, because I know there are more than a few people like yourself who appreciate quality pics.   I like your idea. I will someday create a shutterfly scrap book of classics.

Thanks.  John did a great job on them.  And the move from Dynamic Gold to DGSL X-100 was definitely a good call.  Their weight is closer to the graphite in my regular bag, but keep that perfect feel of a Dynamic profile shaft in persimmon.

I used to keep a backup bag with an extra set of forged CBs, and Tour woods/hybrids.  To be honest, these are plenty playable and I'm not losing enough distance compared to my regular bag that I couldn't use these on a pretty regular basis.  I'm just hoping the woods don't crack over time.

The feel in this set is ridiculous and the woods go pretty darn far given their age and material composition.  Finding the old school hats for the persimmons was a nice finishing touch to the bag.

My current bag:

Hogan Apex Driver, '91 model I think, Apex 4 shaft;
Hogan Radial 3wd, Apex 3 shft--with temp dropping arthiritis flairs up, don't know why I have have the most trouble with fairway wds in Fall and Winter, was gaming another model of Apex 3wd w/#4 shaft until last week;
Irons: Hogan BH Grind 1-9, Apex 4 shaft;
Wedges: Hogan Special K Grind 51*, and either a Hogan Special SI or Tom Kite Grind 56*;
Putter: MacGregor Ironmaster VIP, Original IMG 5
Bag: Sun Mountain SwiftX carry/stand bag--not vtg, but very lightwgt w/plenty of pockets;
Grips: mostly Tacki-Mac Jumbo wraps--have found they're great for old farts, a lot better than those over-tapered-elemental torture devices marketed as arthiritis grips! Besides, I wear XL gloves, so they are just about the right size anyway.

Sorry, no pics, just well-used sticks in good condition.
