It's not the bag that scares me, but when he brings his own caddy.

Custom fitted i20s and a SC putter. I don't believe it would tell you much about me or my game though.

Doesn't matter though: I'm not good enough to play for any serious money.

mizuno irons - any older MP or even newer MP irons.

Old beat up wedges - Big Key.

The guy I play with is the best golfer within 100 miles.  Has mine and a few other local course records.  Has MP something and a pair of old cleveland wedges.
Hes all excited he just got a new driver - I think it was a ft9 ! lol

When i see irons with a spot there i say to myself : "self, that person hits every shot a little thin" and that's about it. The bags that scare me are the ones that have a club or shaft I've never heard of because I know them all, I think

Even worse, the 17 year old with a year old set of irons with the dime sized brown spots and a 910 with a wear spot in the face.  Don't bet against that kid.

That was me and it annoyed the crap out of the adults at the course I played at.  If you ever see a group of kids or teens, fear the one who screws around the most in the practice area or talks about his game the least, he is the best.  When it comes to adults look for mark on the irons or the ones who don't care about the equipment.  If you see a person with a bag on nice clubs and all he does is talk about them, no problem. If you see a person with a bag of nice clubs and he doesn't really care, fear him.

I'd be worried about the guy that has NEXT years Prototype irons with dime-sized brown spots on them. Isn't very good looking but his GF is a 12 and he doesn't come from money but he's a heartbeat away from turning pro.

I would never be concerned about any of these guys because I'd be about 1000 yards away from them in a different 4-some.

Good Lord!  I've got half the things that intimidate most of you and I can throw up a 78 with the best of them.

My favorite bag is a 15 year old hoofer with my name on it. ( Ping gave it to me for free)
My favorite irons are old hogan apex's with the brown spot.( can get a set all pre browned on ebay for $100)
My favorite driver is a 905T with a super obscure speeder tour spec ( also $100)
My favorite wedges are clevland 588 RTG. ( can get a set for $50)
And I have a apex pc 1 iron in there too.
Also footjoy classices with new spikes ( $5 bucks at a garage sale)

There you have it.  you can look like a player for $255 big bucks!  LOL

Of course my over the top butcher chop swing might give me away.....

Stretched lettering on the soles of Cleveland wedges.  If you've seen them, you know what I'm talking about.
New grips on 10+ year old clubs
An MnBr older Ping putter with the grip wrapped in tennis tape
A 10+ year old 3 wood

Granted all the above could also belong to a cheap hack.  The practice green and driving range will tell the rest.

How about lead tape on the back of their irons --  a player that knows what he wants to feel, and the value of matching that feel throughout the set.

Regular playing partner's an old fart with a bag (fake Mizuno bag) full of premium JDM SGI clubs exept for an old TM 3 wood and a banged up ugly-arse fake SC Futura that's has "The Future" badly engraved on the sole. Guy regularly shoots in the low 70's and sometimes breaks par, and he never practice.

The bags that scare me the most are the ones that scream human rain delay. You know just by looking at his sticks it's going to be a 6 hour round. He's going to look at every putt 20 times from various angles. He's going to debate for 15 minutes what club he should used for a tucked flag from 215 knowing good and well he can't get there. He will shoot 92, which despite being 12 shots over his index is no excuse to play slow.

This type of bag usually has tons of Taylormade white in the woods. Mizuno irons possibly with iron covers. Bob and Don round out the wedges and putter positions. Add an extra 30 minutes to the round if he has club Cameron anything or a limited putter cover.

This is by far the scariest competitor's bag that exists. It would be a terrifying Halloween costume this year. Just don't show up at my door for candy.

I'd be scared in matchplay if my opponent was a 4 handicapper with a brand new set of Ping G20's and a Hogan 1 iron with a brown dot on the face...

A few signs I learned from my own experience.

- Old 3wood or 3+wood shafted with steel shaft

- No hybrid covers. Just 2 or 3 irons in bags

- Golf towel is pretty clean and if used, only one even side is dirty

- No shiny new sticks

I'd be scared of the guy who doesn't even glance at my bag, makes polite conversation, takes a genuine interest in my job and family and meanders around hitting every fairway and not ever commenting on his or my game but quietly shooting par.

Great...I fit half of these and most of you could probably wipe the floor with me these days, now I gotta work on my game even more to hold up to the stereotypes :(  That's an old hoofer bag, and the putter is 15 years old.  The hybrid I put in his year and I struggle with it, not sure if it's going to stay or not.
