Big fan of Bettinardi Ben Hogan's from a few years ago.  I really like the "odd" mallet style, but more importantly I like how little they twisted in the putting swing.

My old man played one for about 5 years until he got antsy and sold it for a TM itsy bitsy and he's regretted it ever since. (He bought one off Ebay but it was regripped and could never get the right feel out of it).

To recap:  Aluminium, honeycomb face, pewter coloring, black line, almost toe weighted putter.

Thanks, and enjoy being on GolfWrx with some serious equipment junkies.

Should check out the new BB54 when it comes out this winter. Some tour prototypes out now and reviews have been fantastic by users of all skill levels.

I have the Baby Ben, which I think is the gunmetal version of the putter in the above pic?

I tested the Mizuno (whatever blade was current) against the Hogan '06 Apex side by side at a demo day several years ago. I had to search for the Hogans at the Callaway tent.  Night and day difference in feel.  I know I'm committing a sin here but the Hogans were much softer than the Mizuno.  I really wanted to try the Mizuno since all I ever heard about them was the feel.  I was actually disappointed.  I just picked up a set of '06 Apex heads from a member here for a winter rebuild project.  I still would like a set of Mizunos, however.

Not a sin at all. Even though Cally owned them at the time, the most recent irons (Apex '99, etc.) were amazing. Purists rankle at such suggestions, but they were great irons. I had a full Hogan bag before they died and I switched to Mizuno.

OP, the red limited edition Japan release headcover was the best fitting for that model & kaaayelll, I've not seen the slot cutout on an xcelerator before, must a real rare one, heres my old one with headcover.

I know I am late to the party, but I recently purchased a baby Ben (normal length) from a guy on craigslist because I saw it was made by Bettinardi. Took it out and it started making more putts than my Scotty Cameron Futura Phantom. Love this thing!

I also want Callaway to bring back Hogan irons, I miss that buttery soft feel.

Also, anyone know where I can get one of those green headcovers? My old (normal gray Bettinardi for my Baby Ben) headcover falls off all the time. I am going to lose it one of these days while walking (magnet too weak?)

I cycle through a Lajosi, TeI3 Del Mar II, and Odyssey Protype #7 ..... all mid mallets with plumber necks.......... haven't used a large mallet in a long time, so if I can get it cheap I'll give it a go........  I've actually had a very hard time finding a Betti in the past. All of the stock options in my local shop never felt right to me (little harsh).....  I'm actually eyeing an older Bettinardi mid mallet from early 2000s now and will probably pull the trigger

Was this from a Pittsburgh Craiglist ad by chance?  I contacted the guy and asked him about shipping it to WV for me but I decided against it.  The shipping costs made it more than what I could pay on eBay.  If I remember correctly it was only 35 bucks?

$35 is a steal for that putter though (or for any Bettinardi IMO)

I just refinished my latest Xcelerator (I also have the Baby Bee).  The pewter finish you are talking about is called gunmetal and it is a common anodized color - you can get your head anodized for about $75.  Doing the paintfill yourself costs about $12 if you buy good enamels from a model store and some proper syringe topped paint fill bottles.   Since I had it anodized, I took a torch to the head and deshafted it (didn't do any damage to the finish, FYI, and put on a Super Stroke grip after cutting down the shaft from 35" to 33.25".  Reshafted with 2 part epoxy, then regripped it.  The paintfill I chose was matte black and electric purple. The purple fills the line on the bottom, the bettinardi on the back, and the RJB on the face.  Everything else is matte black.  It turned out HOTT.  My next task is sewing a custom headcover for it.

My buddy uses the Hawk and does very well with it - he's a +2 hcp. I think the single piece aluminum milling makes a huge difference compared to the multi material bodies of more current mallets.  I have a baby bee and an xcelerator that I swear by.  I could sit and look at the millwork on them for hours.  Just did a custom refinish of my xcelerator to gunmetal with black / purple paintfill.  Both are center-shafted.

After they first came out, my boss gave me (free) his like-new Baby Ben.  Over the years, I've had a few truly magical putting rounds with it.  Why it's not still in my bag, I don't know.  It'll never leave my collection though, and after typing this it will probably get gamed this weekend.
