Agree on the white steel, it never made sense to me.

"ok! We're going to put an awesome insert in this putter, then we're going to cram a hunk of metal in there so it feels like you're putting with a tire iron!"

Best:  Original White Hot, AGSI, Metal X

Worst:  Ping Scottsdale -- every putt I hit with it felt like crap -- even the good ones.  If you're a masochist, it might be the one for you, but if you don't get pleasure from pain, I'd look elsewhere.
Scotty Cameron Studio Style -- I had the worst distance control of any putter I've ever used, and if you've seen me on the greens, you'd know that's saying something.

I concluded a few years ago that inserts aren't for me..

Best is the Tad Moore Mokume insert in the Barn Finds.  Period.
Attachment barn find face.png

I think the worst insert I felt was the Cobra Bobby Grace 2200 w/ HSM.  The insert was this dingy yellow that looked like a chain smoker's fingers and felt like a sponge.  No distance control or feel with it.

i wish i'd get a chance to putt with one of these some time. too much coin for my collecting.

Best: betti fit face, not an insert but a very good feeling face. EDEL pixl insert.

Worst: gotta go nubbins. It's been 14 yrs since I owned one.

Mine is a toss up between Scotty's TeI3 and the Barnfinds Mokume in Tad Moore's putters. And I liked the pixel version of the IsoForce (not the clear one though).

Worst? Probably White Ice as it was too soft.

Correction.... It's IsoForce not Pur.

Worst: ping isopur. It looked cool with the ping on the face but it felt like crap. I still can't believe that they made two series of these!

Isopur was terrible - like the bottom of a ski.  Clear and you could see the ping logo thru the foggy isopur insert like a set of K2 skis.  And that cheesy neoprene head cover was a fail. The hosel wasn't covered and it would still bang into your graphite shafts.

I'm going to agree on the White Hot XG material.  Makes every ball feel Nerf.

The new PING Scottsdale looks and feels like Tupperware ™

I love Seemore and their alignment system, but the stock insert in the RST 2 had to go.  It was deep-milled, but simply just plastic.

Now my replacement has got some response.

I liked the horizontally milled copper insert in a SeeMore that a local GolfSmith had had for over a year. Always putt with it when I go in, never can talk myself into spending the $399.99 on it.

That nubbins insert looks like it was peeled off a cheap ping pong paddle. I've never used one, but I can't imagine it is too nice to putt with.

I'm starting to like the White Ice insert though. I thought it was a little soft at first, but i'm really beginning to like it.

It was way before my time, but I putted around with a used one at a local course one time. Based on performance alone, it was just too soft. Distance control on longer putts was a little iffy. It wasn't great in the looks department...but there are a ton of pretty awful looking putters on the shelves even now.

Best: Nike method. Even though it isn't a true insert. Other bests would be the White Ice and Scotty Studio Style.

Worst: White Hot XG. Made every ball feel like a balata, and those were even before my generation.

Best: Cleveland BRZ- gives a good roll, lets you know when you have missed but hit it pure and wow. Nothing I have played has had better feel than that.
Honourable mention: TM Pure Roll (in particular I like the Surlyn one)
Worst: Nubbins was before my time so I am going to go with the Adams A7 insert. Also 90% of the Odyssey stuff is too soft or too firm. I have a friend who putts with the white steel CS and makes everything though.

I take slow motion videos to evaluate what face rolls the ball the best.  The Odyssey Tri hot felt really good, but the videos showed big lofts and back spin.  Thats all it took for me to put it away.  Now I make my own putters with a variety of materials, weighting, face inserts, solf, and hard.  Ive enjoyed the process and the results have been good for me. Last week a  round with 24 putts with one 3 putt using my friends putter on the first hole ( I hadn't tweeked mine where I wanted it yet).  I was on fire that day.

Best = Original White Hot - very smooth consistent feel that puts a great roll on the ball

Worst = Bobby Grace HSM - while I understand the premise of the idea it fails miserably in execution.  Simply feels terrible, provides odd feedback and does not roll the ball all that well.

we are not alone. http://www.epinions....ins_Putter?sb=1

Quote

Wow, Taylor Made must have struck some kind of deal with epinions in order to get the front page of the golf club section so frequently. Or, perhaps, they felt this was the only way they would sell more than a garbage can worth of clubs. Either way, there are a lot of negatives surrounding this club.

I try out putters a little less frequently than I do drivers and decided that I had to give this one a try after seeing it quite a few thousand times staring back at me on the epinions site. Hey, at least this is proof that online ads/epinions works. At any rate, I worked with the Nubbins for about a half an hour and found few bright spots. What I did like was how the ball rolled off the club face. Yes this is important, but was it simply because I was rolling the ball well that day? Who knows. What I do know is that I will not try the Nubbins again in order to determine if it was the club or my putting.

Why was I so disappointed in the Nubbins? Well, here are a few reasons, in no particular order:

1. The Manufacturer: Taylor Made makes drivers. It is what they specialize in and do a good job with. They do not make putters that have ever been worthwhile (How many PGA pros do you see using a Taylor Made putter). Moving into the putter market is akin to Adams deciding that they can make a good golf ball. Or, Cosmo trying to better the love life of a gold fish. The cross market opportunity is huge, but rarely works well (Callaway balls, Nike balls, Adams irons, etc).

2. The club face: If you ask me, the club face looks as though it spent a little time underneath a bird suffering from a bad case of food poisoning. What is that ugly brown/orange thing that adorns the face? Of course, it is an insert and they have been all the rage the past five years. The problem is that we have all gotten accustomed to them being clear or white- not the color of a VW Beetle.

If you have read my other golf reviews, you will know that I am big on looks (women and golf clubs). I find that I am more effective with a club that looks pleasing to the eye. The Nubbins is disturbing, not pleasing.

3. The Club Body: The rest of the club looks pretty much normal. What problem do I have with the rest of the putter? Ya know that little line on the back of the club? The little line that is thin and black and essentially splits the middle of the putter head? Yeah, that one. The line has a purpose and the purpose is direction. The line is simply a directional aid. The idea is that you can draw a visual line from here to the hole. The problem is that the Nubbins line is behind the club head, not on top like with most other putters. While still useful, I would suggest this is like a car without a steering wheel; still useful, but not worth a whole lot.

4. The Price: My club- and granted we are very pricey when it comes to prices for clubs/balls/etc- wanted $140 for the Nubbins. Forget it. I am a huge believer that better putting comes from the player/practice/technique, not from the weaponery. The primary manner in which a new putter can help is in the confidence arena. Simply put, you have not missed a ton of six inch putts with a new putter. Hence, your confidence is better. But $140 for a Taylor Made? Not a chance. Ping, Titleist, and a few others, yes.

5. The Stigma: No one on any of the tours uses a Taylor Made putter. Of course, they are also paid hundreds of thousands of millions of dollars to use the putter they are using, but at the same time they can make more than that if they perform well. The players can also change putters if they want to. Do you know of any who have decided that the Nubbins is the one I want? Who have thought, "I just cannot possibly live without the Nubbins"? Me neither. Remember, these guys and gals have access to all of the clubs made by all of the major manufacturers every week. They can pick and chose as they please. For some reason they avoid Taylor Made.

6. The Performance: In the end it all boils down to one thing- performance. I can use an ugly putter if it performs (Hey, if a VW Beetle brought droves of women into my humble trailer, I would drive it in a second). The thing is the the Nubbins did not perform all that well. Though I liked the way the came off the club face, I also that shortly thereafter there was a lot of bounce. A lot of bounce typically means one of two things; a bounce green, or a putter with too much loft. None of the other putters produced as much bounce as the Nubbins, so I am inclined to believe that the club was to blame. Bounce is not a good thing.

I would not recommend the Nubbins to anyone. There are simply too many good options available and heck, your stroke or alignment is probably the reason you are not satisfied with your putting anyway.

Will never say Nubbins was the worst - I actually bought one of those 10 years ago and thought I was the cat's meow.  Before that I thought the isopure was the coolest thing ever made ... circa 962's and 981's perhaps.

Worst: Stx: grabbed the ball and drove it into the putting surface

Dishonorable mention: Nubbins: spongy, no feel, White Steel: Why!?, Isopur: felt dead

Best: Bobby Grace Red HSM: good rebound and roll

Honorable mention: White hot black: good combination of rebound and softness

I hardly considered the Cameron's insert putters as they closer resembled non-insert putters but I guess technically they are.  TeI3 and GSS are fantastic.

I'd have shown the Nubbins but its in a scrap heap in the garage somewhere, it took 20 minutes to find the Fila.  I have no idea how I ever ended up with it to start with.  It's just awful, think the feel you get at impact on an air hockey table.  I think they just used dried up soles from their basketball shoes and molded them into a hard plastic for their putter.  And to think, they bought Acushnet. :nyam:
