I was just posting about this in another thread and I thought it might be fun. So, what are your all time best and worst putter inserts?

Best: as much as it pains me not to go teryllium, I'm going with the odyssey white hot, it's incredibly soft and it came out in a $130 putter!

Worst: ping isopur. It looked cool with the ping on the face but it felt like crap. I still can't believe that they made two series of these!

It looks like a total cop out but I agree.

I still have a two ball with the white hot insert. Feels great although many may think its a little too soft.

The isopur was such garbage. I ran ping putters up until those came out. I bought one and hated it. I did like the little slip on leather headcover though, lol.

If I recall correctly the little slip on headcover was pings first foray into the world of putter covers.

Because for some reason you had to protect that plastic insert you couldn't damage with a chainsaw!

A few of my favorites: Scotty Cameron TeI3 and Button Back from 2008, Odyssey Tri Hot, Odyssey Black Series with the metal I believe "Black Series i" was its actual name.  I can't remember their names off the top of my head but there were a couple Bobby Grace/MacGregor inserts that I always thought felt great.  Also Bettinardi Fit Face was one if you wanna call that an insert that I thought felt fantastic.

Worst: Only one jumps to mind... TaylorMade Nubbins.

Anser (17)- Speeder 8.8 @ 40.5"
716MB (4-PW)- S400

Best is the Tad Moore Mokume insert in the Barn Finds.  Period.

I think the worst insert I felt was the Cobra Bobby Grace 2200 w/ HSM.  The insert was this dingy yellow that looked like a chain smoker's fingers and felt like a sponge.  No distance control or feel with it.

I can't believe I'm saying this since two of the most knowledgable wrxers just voted it worst but:

I liked the nubbins! It was really soft feeling, of course I never owned one so I have no idea what the performance was like.

On another note, while the original rossie was a great putter, I was always pretty meh about the original black odyssey insert. Was it just me?

The worst for me by far was that Macgregor Bobby Grace face off dct putter...that one insert felt and sounded like a chalkboard! Another bad one was the Ping Scottsdale inserts, I hated those.

Best was the tei3 or even (you're gonna think I'm crazy) the Sizemore copperstix insert.

LOL didn't even see JW calling out the Nubbins when I replied.  Nice JW!  Nubbins was bad because it was almost like a cross between a ping pong paddle and a basketball.. and might have been made of the same material as the ping pong paddles too.

the best and worst both came in one putter.  That B12 tour edge exotics that I bought for $22.99  with the blue plastic insert.  Remember it thrillhouse? Everyone who ever looked like it hated it until they tried it.  Played 2 years on tour with that  POS  LOL!!

Another worst for the nubbins. Or maybe that old stx insert that was soft like a pillow.

Best: gotta be tei3. That putter is what got many of us into hoing putters in the first place.

How could I forget, here's isaacs bag from the first year we played mini tour golf together:

Driver: nakasomething 380cc head from Japan with a diamana in it. Total price like a grand.

3 wood: 25 dollar beat to hell taylormade v steel 3 wood with some $500 tour issue shaft in it.

Hybrid: some 20 degree nickent he rescued from a dumpster again with some expensive tour issue shaft in it. (he still uses this thing btw)

Irons: some taylormade sgi shovels (this was before mtljeff made it cool for good players to use shovels, Isaac was the only one doing this at the time) with rifle shafts that he somehow got to freq out at like 9.0

A macgregor gap wedge he got I don't know how many years prior when they sponsored him.

A tour issue sand wedge from Japan that probably cost $300.

A Cleveland 588 rtg lob wedge that he pulled out of a bargain bin at Arizona golf works for 8 dollars.

That garbage blue putter that he made everything with and constantly used to take my money (one time we played vistal in phoenix and I was gonna sell him this old rangefinder I had for $100 because I'd gotten a new one a couple of months prior, he proceeds to drop 64 on me that included a hole in one and I wound up just giving it to him rather than paying him)

This was all in a ratty old ping hoofer that had a hole in the side that he got for free years prior, he still uses it.

So there we have it, his bag had about 8 times more worth in shafts than in clubs and that was entirely because he had two expensive clubs in a bag otherwise filled with crap he bought off a hobo behind a brothel.

Never had the pleasure of a Teryllium insert.....

Not a big insert guy, but the one in the cleveland bronze series felt great

Least favorite would have to be an old STX putter I had.  Felt good in the store then I couldn't get the ball to the hole on the course cuz it was so soft.

The best insert is no insert at all.  The worst are the older Odyssey inserts, such as the ones the White Hots used.  Horrible insert, no feel at all and the ball came off the face dead.  A few years ago I bought a White Hot XG Teron because I got a deal on it and that thing lasted maybe 3 rounds before it was for sale on Ebay.  Worst putter Ive ever used.

i never got along with the XG insert either!! no idea how that lasted so long... but my favorite was probably the copper insert in a ping zing 2f

Best feeling insert I have tried is (believe it or not) some old Dunlop that I picked up years ago at Academy for like 30 bucks. The insert itself appears to be aluminum but there's some kind of soft backing behind it and around the edges. The hit feels like butter and it rolls great. Never liked the weight of the putter itself but if I could put that insert in another club I would do it in a second.

I think i am going to be alone in this because they never seemed to get much traction but i love the nickel insert in my Ping Craz-e Ni series putter. Plenty of feel, especially on long putts, great sound for me. I don't like inserts as a rule, but i love this one.

My son wanted a mallet to try more of a SBST stroke and i told him i was done buying him putters. Then we see this Nubbins in a play it again sports. the clown who traded it in painted the top of this thing in this gloss white paint. Apparently in an effort to remove glare. Wow, what a double face palm fail, before I removed that paint, standing over a putt in ANY amount of light was just like staring into the sun. Retinal damage and all. The grip looked like someone stuffed it into an oversize pencil sharpener, and was off set so if you held the flat part of the grip normally, the putter sat about 15* open. So I was looking at irons and drivers and wedges I couldn't afford to buy, he was rolling putt after putt in the carpet and told me he wanted it. The price tag was 25 bucks, I offered them half of that and we settled on 15 out the door. I tried that thing and couldn't seem to process how hard to hit a putt of any distance. Everything was short. Always, short. But he loved the thing and putted well with it for a season or so.

Also hated the original AGSI insert.

Best: The teryllium one in my Button Back

Worst: I don't know the model or series, but I played with a kid during my senior year in high school at state who had an STX. I rolled it after we got done and it felt like I was putting with a piece of a tire on the face of my putter. Way too soft. It worked pretty well for him though.

Best: TeI3
Worst: Haven't rolled enough to really say. I *did* have an isopur anser 2 for like 8 years, and then the insert came loose and fell out in the middle of a tournament round...

Has anyone said Taylormade Nubbins yet?

My buddy has one, it's actually worn smooth.

Best feeling insert:  1) Cameron Terylium Button Back (my gamer) - just a little firmer than the original TeI3s; 2) Bobby Grace MacGregor Brass/Copper insert - with the deep milling and the softness of the material, you got an amazingly solid yet soft feel off of putts; honorable mention: Cameron Studio Style, Ping WRX IsoForce with the 124 Ti pixels, Odyssey White hot and White Ice

Worst feeling insert:  White Hot XG, White Steel or White Hot Tour are tied as my least favorite putter faces ever.  The XG and Tour were WAY too soft for me and the Steel just felt horrible and clicky and none of them provided any feedback.  honorable mention:  TM AGSI of any kind, Ping Scottsdale, Old black/gray Never Compromise (all of them)

I actually like the Bobby Grace HSM, especially the red one.
