Tom Cruise may not be the prototypical action star, but his Mission Impossible series is pretty decent.

for over the top action not -so intentional intentional humour (mostly due to the korean direction) The Good the Bad and The Weird which i would bet most haven't seen is definitely in my top 10 the action scenes and story are so over the top yet believable certainly worth watching. and you can't go wrong with predator 1 or 2 either, arnold and danny glover c'mon glover has to be the best none active action star ever lol

Ronin is a cult classic. Very underrated. I love that movie and especially Deniro's understated performance in it. He is so prone to over-acting now and he was so subtle in Ronin. A lot of very short lines that were very well done

the car chase scenes are great too

not sure i'd call it a true action movie. Though the Audi S8 was my favorite car for several years because of it

I liked the early fast and the furious movies because I'm into cars and they were really cool. Fast five ruined it for me though, I don't like that they are changing them to be less about street racing, Anyhoo:

Dom: What are you smiling about?
Brian: Dude, I almost had you!
Dom: You almost had me? You never had me! You never had your car! Granny shiftin', not double clutchin' like you should. You're lucky that hundred shot of NOS didnt blow the welds on the intake. Almost had me? Now me and the mad scientist gotta rip apart the block, and replace the piston rings you fried! Ask any racer, any real racer, it don't matter if you win by an inch or a mile. Winning's winning.

oh... and if we are talking about non stop a$$ whoopin from start to finish with crappy writing and no story line, you cannot leave Starship Troopers out of the discussion. What is there not to like, giant bugs, guns, Denise Richards (pre-creepy).

starship troopers falls into the Face/off category! Watchable because it's so bad

Casper Van Dean cannot even be classified as an actor. He is terrible. He makes Travolta look like Tom Hanks

Fast and the furious to me will go down as one of the more underrated action franchises ever. Doesn't get enough credit right now. They basically re-invented themselves, from hardcore rice-rocket racer boy themes and lingo, to essentially being heist films with cars as the only common link.

They added the Rock aswell, giving them him and the Diesel. Some true action cred right there. Has Paul Walker done anything besides these movies?

I like each one more then the last

It's good.  Story is virtually identical to Taken so there's no real surprises, but it's a good show.

I thought Taken was excellent - a real sleeper.  Taken 2 isn't as good, but if you liked the first one you'll enjoy then sequel.

And Maggie Grace looks great!

He told me this once thinking I was gonna laugh at him and then got all shocked when he found out how much I knew about datsuns.

People make fun of them, but there are several Datsun z's that are real sleepers.

I can't believe that Drop Zone was the only Snipes film to get mentioned. No way can we talk action and keep it to a top 5 only. My list of classics definitely includes:

Passenger 57
Blade
U.S. Marshals (The Fugitive has a much bigger suspense element to it or I'd include it too)
War
Rambo III & the newest Rambo
The Corruptor
The Replacement Killers
Fast Five
Shooter
Kill Bill 1 & 2

There are some others like Way of the Gun that I'd include but they aren't quite pure action flicks like the rest.

Can I throw out a western as an action?

The Outlaw Josey Wales. It fits most of the criteria (other than Sondra Locke as the "hot" female character),

Yes!  Roadhouse is a classic and definitely deserves inclusion.

In relation to an earlier post, Falling Down is a fantastic movie, but I can't have it as an 'Action Movie' by any description.

Easily the best part of Taken 2 tonight was when I got pissed at the kid 3 rows down on his cell phone and I threw the gummy bear and hit him right in the the middle of the back of his head.

Then thrillhouse started texting me the whole movie just to piss me off!

I get mad at people that can't get off their phones.  I mean really, it's 10;15 on a friday night.  You're 16. You're with a cute girl.  You're at the movies.  Who the hell are you talking to?  Then the guy shut his phone off and starting making out with his girl like a normal human being.

Also, How can you kill 38 Albanians in a foreign country and just go for a milkshake?

Fun movie but suspension of disbelief factor was at an all time high.
