Yea, still struggling.  Spent the last few days at The Ryder Cup.  Back to life and I'm already thinking about going out this afternoon.  Damn it!  Get it together man!

I've re-read the original post 10 times and I don't see how it's different from any other avid golfer.    That's golf.

If it makes you feel any better I'm currently browsing these forums while procrastinating on a paper due tomorrow. :busted2:

Skipping a few classes on Tuesday for a little tournament too... :D

Funny enough I did a similar thing, I would work from 8am to 5pm and go out and hit range balls after work during the summer or even play 9 holes with a buddy. Like what a previous poster said, if you're missing long spans of work then get worried. Though it's your business, you're the Big Cheese!!!

You need to put it to your wife long and hard BEFORE you go to "take out the trash."  That way, she's too exhausted and spent to get up and catch you recording your swing.

This is an easy one! My situation is very similar to alot of your post. My wife and I own a couple businesses and we have a ton of great staff, customer base, responsibility yada yada. To make it short, hire/promote someone to be your right hand. Micro manage them by phone and email in the beginning. This person should be manager on duty so-to-speak, even when your just practicing and walking 9 during your normal office hours. You could run your business easily along with having hour long range/putting sessions 5 times a week, and 27 holes each week on weekdays alone.

I think if you put your clubs away for 10 days meaning no contact (putting ok) you would make greater strides than from daily rushed 9 hole speed cart rounds, speaking from experience of course.

Don't feel guilty about practicing and playing, as others have said there are certainly far worse things to be addicted to. Once you get to the level you expect of yourself (which in WRX land is approximately +3) you will practice less as far as the range and do the rest of your learning on the course which is better schedule wise anyway.

Sometimes I get a little loose and will binge play and get behind on certain aspects of the operations, but then I also feel like I'm not perfect and might get behind on work without golf just because of the workload alone. Lastly, the relaxation, peace, comfort and satisfaction that you get from hitting incredible golf shots and putts probably helps your business more than hurts it.

Hahaha Story of a WRXers life.
Ia actually feel better knowing I'm not the only one.
As long as the mix stays healthy, the company stays healthy I don't see a problem.

I would imagine that if you're business was doing very bad and you had to lay of people etc you would be hard at work trying to avoid going under instead of playing golf

I feel like playing some golf actually makes me work better.
I can manage some phone calls/ e-mails from the range and get through the more important stuff after range time/course time more concentrated because I had my daiuly dosis of golf!

I am in the same boat as everyone else. I feel like Golf is consuming too much of my time and if I don't restrict myself, I end up spending a good 90% of my day in golf related activities (youtube, playing rounds, forums etc).

Other hobbies I had prior to picking up golf having did not have this effect on me. Golf is great in terms of exercise and keeping me sane and happy, but I would be a lot more productive at work if I treated it just like any other hobby.

Golfwrx was restricted by my IT for 6 months and I was sooo productive, it landed me a promotion. I secretly wish they would go back to doing that again, as I can easily spend a whole day at work browsing WRX.

This game can definitely get a hold on people. I love to play and wish I could get on the course (or driving range) more often.  I usually go by myself since none of my friends or family love to play as much as I do.  In my opinion, there is nothing better than an early morning round when everything is quiet.

I feel your pain OP - I went to the dentist today and got done at 4:00. The dentist is 30 minutes from my house. I had to be home around 4:45 to take my son somewhere. There is a course across the street (you can see it from the dentist chair if you get the right room) and I contemplated - for 3 minutes - if I had time to hit a small bucket before I went home. It was not a fleeting thought - I almost convinced myself I could do it. I actually held up 2 cars behind me pulling out of the lot because I wanted to turn toward the golf couse but I went right at the last miniute. Almost caused an accident. Awesome.

At least I know what to do after the dentist next time...

I love this game...

I know two guys on here who lost their jobs due to them lying about going golfing when they should have been working at their jobs.
One of them worked for the government and used a government car to go to the golf course when he said he was doing something else and he is in HOT water for this ....... Got fired but also is looking at charges ....... The other one was posting on here all day long and failed to do his paperwork and lost his job at the hotel he was working at.
We all love the game but our family and your way of providing for them is NUMBER ONE !!!

I too have dreams of becoming a starter at one of our local golf courses.

Only 12 more years to retirement....I'll have my house paid off before then, I'm saving a lot for retirement, and I'll have a good pension.

Life is short, why not do what you enjoy if you can.

LMAO at OP's original post....threw the 9 iron in the corner and hung your head like she caught you masturbating, LOL!! That's some funny crap right there.

Same boat here, in terms of always thinking about it. I feel guilty about it, but honestly don't know how to change. Would have to give the game up altogether I think. That. Isn't. An. Option.

I'm not REALLY looking for advice, as no sane person would actually suggest neglecting your livelyhood for a hobby.  I know the answer is to get my head out of the sand and put this game back in perspective, but I'm truly ate up w/ it.  I own my own business & it's fairly successful.  I have surrounded myself w/ smart, talented employees that I trust.  And, honestly, I deserve to be able to get out once a week or so & play.  That's not been the case lately though.  For the past month or so I've been like a drug addict.  I go to the range every morning for an hour before I go into my office.  I've been showing up sweaty & disheveled.  I then "before I get started" Google swing flaws or techniques that I want to work on.  I work for a few hours & at lunch, I'll go back up & putt.  Then, I'll go back to work, but on my way home at the end of the day, I'll stop by and play a lightening speed 9 hole round w/ a cart (that usually ends in frustration).  Add to this the fact that I haven't said "no" to playing golf with a friend or customer in I can't remember when.  And, quite honestly, I'm exhausted.  My shoulder hurts, I'm sore, I feel like I'm getting carpel tunnel syndrome, yet here I am at 10:30 posting this dumb golf story on a golf blog. I think the worst was the other day when I told my wife I was taking out the trash at like 11:00 pm, 15 min later she "caught me" recording my golf swing in the garage.  It was as if she had walked in on me masturbating.  I threw my 9 iron into the corner and sulked in w/ my head down, face red w/ embarrassment.  Anyway, I'm feeling incredibly guilty.  It's just a damn game & I have a business that demands my attention.  Yet, I actually caught myself daydreaming about selling my business and getting a job as a starter.  What is wrong w/ me?!?!?!?

Now THAT'S a good one! Seriously, there's nothing wrong with you. Best suggestion I can make is slow down on the 9 holes to cut the frustration. Maybe take a few lessons to help any swing flaws. Remember, it's not the quantity that will make you better, it's the QUALITY!!

I think a lot of us WRX'ers have been there before. The one word of caution I would offer is: burnout. When I first started playing golf it consumed my every waking minute. It soon crept into my unconscious as I slept. This went on for over two years, after which one day I woke up, and I no longer had the desire to play. I played one round of golf last September, and my most recent round was last week. I enjoyed spending time with my buddies, but I realized that my insane passion during those two+ years ultimately contributed to the sudden flame-out. Hindsight is 20/20, but I wish I had taken time to enjoy the journey more.
