Why hasn't Fred Couples been Ryder Cup captain?

I'm sure it's been discussed before, but why hasn't Couples had a shot as Ryder Cup captain.  He's a major winner and has a good record as a multiple-time Ryder Cup player.  I know he didn't win the PGA, but neither did Corey Pavin.  Is there a back story on why Couples hasn't been tapped to captain the team?

He's been a President's Cup captain in 2011 and will be again in 2013. Making him Ryder Cup captain also would be a bit much don't you think?

The Ryder Cup traditionally doesn't pick captains after they are 50 and not playing on the regular tour.  Seems like a stupid rule to me.  But whatever.  They stick to it.  So Freddie won't get the call.

Perhaps Freddie is too "laid back" for the PGA stiffs who take themselves and the matches way too seriously.

I would have picked Freddie in 2012 and Davis in 2014, but whatever...

I guess Freddie's window of opportunity has closed now, just like Sandy Lyle for Europe.

If the age 50 thing is true, that makes no sense to me. You want experienced people as captain. Nicklaus and Player have both captained Presidents Cup teams.

As far as Freedie being captain this year, that would have made no sense. He captained the 2011 Presidents Cup and is apparently slated for the 2013 Cup. You start planning two years in advance and the 2nd year is really busy. No way he could do three in a row.

Greg

1993 indeed. The only captain to win the cup twice in a row for USA in recent history.
Back then there were no vice-captains.

It was also DL3's first cup as a player.

I can still remember Costantino Rocca's missed short put to lose against Davis Love. Heartbreaking (for a Euro that is).

Time is flying isn't it ?

I have also heard that they typically don't pick guys who are over 50 and/or off the regular tour, so I figured Freddie's chance had come and gone...but it seems weird to me.  Thought there might be some specific reason behind it...I guess not.  Everyone can't be captain of course, but Freddie seems (to me) like someone who'd get the call.

He seems to be thought of differently now.  He seems a bit more outgoing and talkative.  I think the thought was he wouldn't be a very good captain because of his personality and demeanor.

Fred Funk hasn't been named captain because his playing record isn't good enough. I'm pretty sure every US Captain has won at least 1 major.

imo, i think toms gets the nod before mickelson does. i think phil will definitely be a non-playing captain, which could mean at least another six years before he doesn't qualify outright.

This is the biggest snub of all time. Maybe in any sport. It's almost unforgivable that he was never selected when you look at some who have served as captain. I won't mention any names. Except 'Cowboy" Hal Sutton. But there are 2 or 3 others who simply aren't as qualified as Nelson.

Larry Nelson 9-3-1 record in 3 RC's. 3 time major winner, War hero, had a quiet 'go-about-my-business' attitude but was a bull dog competitor.

As far as couples goes, I think the Presidents cup experience has been great for him. And before that I am not sure if the powers that be felt he could handle the pressure. As affable and relaxed as he seems, I think he is actually a somewhat shy and introverted and not very comfortable in the spotlight. You know, the opposite of Cowboy Hal.

2016, or (more likely) 2020. I think they'd want to save him for when its in the US.
I'd guess Toms in 2014, Furyk in 2016 or 2018, and Duval and/or Leonard in the Cups after that.

With 40 PGA Tour wins ..........it's a no brainer that Phil is going to be a Ryder Cup captain. If he is not awarded the position in 2014, who do they pick? David Toms is a nice guy and has a PGA Championship but somehow doesn't excite me as a captain. I personally don't think Phil will get the nod till 2016.........so who gets the captains job in 2014.

My pick? (I know, a dark horse, but ... ) ... I think Steve Stricker would rock. Very even handed, calm, solid, smart. Extremely well liked and respected by the guys on tour. Knows golf and all the players cold - (and seems to understand psychology - I think he could do pairings extremely well). No major, but a very solid career. And very experienced at match play.

I actually think he'd be a spectacular captain.

I too think Stricker would be a good captain, but without a major on his resume...........I'd be surprised to see him picked. I'm guessing Sluman, Furyk, or Toms.
