I have been fitted now twice for a driver - maybe 3-4 years ago, and then this week. In between I experimented with a lot of different heads & shafts. The rigs I got from the 2 fittings were very different - first one was 13* Nakashima 440 head with reg shaft, this time 8.5 Cobra AMP head with stock stiff. This fitting was at an outdoor range in Long Beach Fitting Studio with FlightScope. Both times, my driver distance and control took an enormous leap forward - 30 yards this time. I knew I was hitting the ball too high with too much spin even for my modest swing speed. I would have never even thought about this head, and certainly not 8.5* nor a stiffer tip.
I had thought that trial and error (helped by the generous return policy of Roger Dunn here in LA) would let me figure out how to pick an optimal driver. That's just not been my experience. Getting a solid block of time where you can see the ball flight with different heads and shafts, get good data and talk with someone whose first job is to help you see what really works (and then of course he wants to sell you a rig, but I had store credit at R Dunn's and I am not at all sure a $300 shaft is going to get me much better than what I saw yesterday - but I am going to go back and go through the whole bag and see what else can be optimized. This guy is going to get a lot of business from me over time.)
The reason I am posting this is I am now solidly convinced that getting fitted with someone who has a decent inventory of heads and shafts, plus the right kind of equipment and expertise is really worth the effort. This was $50 well spent.
I just wanted to pass this along to all you guys who have never tried getting fitted. 2 for 2 of great results is my experience.
And PS: Cobra AMP at $200 new is a steal.
PPS: He measured the flex in all my clubs. Wow, were they ALL OVER THE PLACE. Not one club measured to the flex - all were at least a half-flex weaker than they read, and a few were 2 flexes weaker.
