2012 Wyndham Championship

(The final of 37 events in the PGA TOUR Regular Season)

Greensboro, NC                                August 13-19, 2012                      First-place FedExCup Points: 500

Sedgefield Country Club                           Par/Yards: 70/7,117            Purse: $5,200,000

Second-Round Notes – Friday, August 17, 2012

Weather: Partly cloudy with temperatures reaching 90 degrees. Winds SW 10-15 mph.

On Friday, the second round was suspended due to a dangerous weather situation at 5:15 p.m. Play resumed at 6:32 p.m. for a total delay of 1 hour 17 minutes.

This is the 16th event suspended/delayed this season on the PGA TOUR.

It is the ninth straight week on TOUR that there has been a suspension/delay (Travelers Championship, AT&T National, The Greenbrier Classic, John Deere Classic, True South Classic, RBC Canadian Open, WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, PGA Championship and Wyndham Championship).

Second-Round Leaderboard

Jimmy Walker               128 (-12)

Webb Simpson              128 (-11)

Tim Clark                      130 (-10)

Sergio Garcia                130 (-10)

Harris English                130 (-10)

Carl Pettersson              130 (-10)

36-hole cut

77 professionals at 1-under-par 139 from a field of 155 professionals and one amateur made the 36-hole cut.

The cut the last two years was 3 under. The lowest cut in tournament history is 5 under in 2007.

Jimmy Walker

All three of Walker’s top-10 finishes this season came in his first six starts.

Walker is looking for his first win in his 158th start on TOUR. His best finish is T3 at the 2010 Valero Texas Open.

Walker’s only other second-round lead/co-lead on TOUR was at the 2010 Valero Texas Open (T3).

Walker’s career-low rounds on TOUR:

62                     2011 Greenbrier Classic                                     T4

62                     2012 Wyndham Championship                            TBD

63                     2011 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am          T9

63                     2011 Shell Houston Open                                   T30

Walker entered the week No. 84 in the FedExCup standings. He finished T21 last week at the PGA Championship.

Walker is the only player in the field bogey-free after the first two rounds.

Walker’s 128 is tied for the second lowest score in tournament history after 36 holes. Carl Pettersson holds the record with a 125 in 2008. Tommy Gainey had a 128 in 2011 after 36 holes.

Webb Simpson

Defending champion Webb Simpson is trying to join Sam Snead as the only players to successfully defend their title at the Wyndham Championship. Snead achieved the feat twice, winning back-to-back in 1949-50 and 1955-56. In addition to Snead, eight others have won the event more than once.

Last year, Simpson was T2 and three shots off the lead after the second round.

There have been seven different winners of the Wyndham Championship from an ACC school. Of that group, David Love III is the only one to win twice in Greensboro.

Only six players have won a major championship and the Wyndham Championship in the same season (Sandy Lyle, Scott Simpson, Larry Nelson, Sam Snead, Byron Nelson and Ralph Guldahl.

Sergio Garcia

Garcia entered the week No. 102 in the FedExCup standings.

Garcia’s career-low rounds on TOUR:

62                     1999 HP Byron Nelson Championship                  T3

62                     2002 WGC-American Express Championship       T7

63                     2001 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial            1st

63                     2012 Wyndham Championship                            TBD

Garcia opened with rounds of 67-63 this week for his second and third rounds in the 60s in his last 14 rounds on TOUR.

Garcia has seven PGA TOUR wins, but is looking for his first since THE PLAYERS Championship in 2008.

As an amateur, Garcia finished T3 in the Web.com Tour’s Greensboro Open in 1998 at Sedgefield Country Club with rounds of 72-67-65-68. He made three starts on the Web.com Tour in 1998 as an amateur.

Tim Clark

North Carolina State’s Tim Clark is making his seventh start in the Wyndham Championship, and first since finishing T6 in 2008.

Clark, who made just four starts in 2011 due to an elbow injury and tendonitis, is making his 16th start of the season. He is coming off a T11 at last week’s PGA Championship.

Clark is seeking his second PGA TOUR win this week (2010 PLAYERS Championship). He comes into the week ranked 109th in FedExCup standings.

Harris English

English is looking to become the third rookie to win on TOUR this season (John Huh and Ted Potter Jr).

English has two top 10s and is No. 94 in the FedExCup standings.

Carl Pettersson

With his 68, Pettersson is now 12/16 for rounds in the 60s since 2008, when the event moved back to Sedgefield Country Club.

Pettersson is making his 10th start in the Wyndham Championship where, in addition to his 2008 win, he finished T4 last year.

Pettersson is making his 22nd start of the season, where he has amassed five top-10 finishes, one of which was his fifth career PGA TOUR title at the RBC Heritage earlier this year on Hilton Head. Pettersson is coming off a T3 finish at last week’s PGA Championship on Kiawah Island.

Pettersson grew up and attended high school at Grimsley here in Greensboro. He is an active member on the Board of Directors at Sedgefield Country Club.

Second-Round Notes

Since making a return to Sedgefield Country Club in 2008, the second-round leader has held on for the win twice. Carl Pettersson achieved the feat in 2008, as did Arjun Atwal in 2010.

So far this year, a second-round leader has parlayed that position into victory just seven times in 35 stroke-play events. The most recent to do so was Scott Piercy at the RBC Canadian Open last month.

Tim Herron (T47)

Herron’s 61 in the second round tied the course record (Arjun Atwal/2010, Kevin Na/2010 and Carl Pettersson/2008) and also tied his personal best score on TOUR (2003 Humana Challenge).

Herron had one bogey (No. 6) and five consecutive birdies (No. 13-17).

Herron was second from last (155th) in the field after a first round 76. Entering this week he was No. 139 in the FedExCup standings and a missed cut this week would have eliminated him from the first Playoff event next week.

2011 Morgan Hoffman     78         66         12 Shots

2011 Scott Gordon         77         66         11 Shots

Kevin Stadler’s 20 shot (81-61) improvement from round one to round two at the 2008 Frys.com Open is the highest on TOUR dating to 1980. Stadler still missed the cut.

David Mathis (T14)

He's done it all in terms of moving in and out of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup in his career at Wyndham.  In 2009, he was 1 of 5 players to play their way into the Playoffs at Wyndham.  In 2011, he was 1 of 3 players to play their way out of the Playoffs at Wyndham.

Mathis is looking to become the first player to play their way into the Playoffs more than once at the Wyndham Championship.

Haas became the third player in 2012 to record consecutive eagles in a round. Kevin Na first achieved the feat with eagles on 17 and 18 in round two of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions. In round two of the Humana Challenge, Bobby Gates posted back-to-back eagles at Nos. five and six.

Since 2008, no player has recorded back-to-back eagles at Sedgefield Country Club.

FedExCup Notes

As the final event in the PGA TOUR Regular Season, the Wyndham Championship plays a pivotal role in the race to the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup. The event offers the final opportunity for players to improve their FedExCup positions heading into the Playoffs, or in some instances, move into the top 125 in the FedExCup standings and qualify for the first Playoffs event, The Barclays.

Last year at the Wyndham Championship, Matt Jones began the week No. 122 in the FedExCup standings, but missed the cut and finished No. 127. In 2008 he finished No. 127 in the FedExCup standings and in 2009 he finished No. 126 to just miss the Playoffs. This year, Jones was the second to last alternate to get in the Wyndham Championship field and is No. 182 in the FedExCup standings. He needs to finish in a two-way tie for second or better this week in order to qualify for the Playoffs. Jones missed the cut and will miss the Playoffs.

Last year at the Wyndham Championship, Ernie Els (No. 118 in FedExCup), Padraig Harrington (No. 124) and William McGirt (No. 125) moved into the top 125 in the final FedExCup standings and earned a spot into The Barclays and the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup. Matt Jones, David Mathis and Cameron Beckman dropped out after missing the cut.

In 2010, Scott Piercy was the only player to move into the top 125 at the Wyndham Championship. Piercy moved from 140th in the FedExCup standings entering the week to claim the 125th and final spot. In 2009, five players made it from outside the top-125 in and into The Barclays due to their performance at the Wyndham Championship. There were also five players in 2008 that played their way into The Barclays at the Wyndham Championship and three in 2007.

In 2011, Justin Leonard finished No. 126 in the FedExCup standings to miss the Playoffs for the first time. A bogey on his 72nd hole at the Wyndham Championship dropped him out of the top 125 in the FedExCup standings.

Three players have competed in all four TOUR Championships by Coca-Cola since the inception of the FedExCup in 2007 – Steve Stricker, Phil Mickelson and Hunter Mahan.

No player outside the Playoffs bubble entering the Wyndham Championship has successfully negotiated his way to the TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola.

2012 FedExCup

Jim Furyk (No. 17) is the highest-ranked player in the FedExCup standings without a win. Last year, Webb Simpson was the highest ranked player in the FedExCup points without a win entering the Wyndham Championship. Simpson reeled off wins at the Wyndham Championship and Deutsche Bank Championship.

Eight players under the age of 30 are currently inside the top 30 in the FEC standings, with John Huh (22 years old) being the only rookie inside the top 30 in the FedExCup standings (No. 26).

There have been seven different FedExCup leaders in 2012: Steve Stricker (1), Johnson Wagner (4), Kyle Stanley (5), Rory McIlroy (2), Hunter Mahan (7), Jason Dufner (6) and Tiger Woods (7).

Jason Dufner is the only player in this week’s field that can take over the No. 1 spot in the FedExCup standings.

Sedgefield Country Club

The conversion of the greens from creeping bentgrass to Champion bermudagrass was completed earlier this year. In the absence of untimely rains, the greens are expected to exhibit a degree of firmness that has been lacking the previous four years. Several architectural changes have also been made to the course. These include the addition of three bunkers at #5 greens complex: one short left and two back right; an additional bunker directly behind #15 green; the creation of a deeper swale left of #15 green maintained at primary rough height; and finally the repositioning of the cart path left of #5 green deeper into the woods providing additional room in the form of primary rough left of the approach.

In 2011 the cumulative scoring average at the Wyndham Championship was 68.97 after four rounds.

2012 Scoring Averages at the par-70 Sedgefield Country Club:
