I bring this up because a scratch golfer at my club bombs a Hippo Hex driver. Everytime I see him, I want to hand him my 9064 and see what he can really do. Any similar experiences?

Most of the guys I see around the course that can play have old sticks and nothing white in the bag.

There is nothing "poor quality" about older equipment.  Poor quality would mean the swing weight is inconsistent, or the loft and lie is off specification, stuff like that.

Maybe some Northwestern clubs?  What ever happened to them anyway?

I played with a guy a few years ago that used a set of off brand clubs and about the oldest Nike driver out there.  It's kind of rare considering that usually to get to that level you invest a lot of time, effort, and money, but they're out there.

Honestly I think it's cool as hell to see a single digit handicap with MacGregors that cost $200. And a 15 year old driver

Yeah, but MacGregors aren't poor quality.

My good buddy Jake played for the longest time with a set of Spalding Executives and not even a full set at that. He lost his 9 iron and snapped his 5 and 7 during normal play. He also had the driver to go with it and he would crush it about 310 easy. He was a 3 handicap too at the time.

The best guys I have seen at a lot of courses have some pretty old gear in the bag that they game until it gives out.

I have seen a pretty wide variety of questionable clubs. One guy actually had a Walmart off-brand fairway metal in his bag. Said he bought it for a nephew and curiosity got the better of him - hit it well, so he kept it. He says it feels like it will fall apart at any time. lol

The Australian Blade and Revolution irons were awesome.  I gamed a set of Revolution irons for a few seasons.  I sometimes wish I had hung on to them.  They were some of the best feeling irons I have ever hit.

it's so funny... the good players I see usually have boring clubs... and play boring golf! Fairways, greens, two putts. Few risky and hero shots, etc, kind of funny how unassuming golf is until you've realized the guy with 1986 blades is killing you with the upgraded shafts and white clubs!

Very true. Played with many guys down here who shot close to par and didn't know, or didn't let on, what flex shaft was in their clubs.

have a buddy used to be a 3-5 handicap as a youngster. Now back into the game part time still plays to around a 7-8 handicap with a complete set of Slazenger Cally copies in striking electric blue and orange

There is a guy at my club that plays with clubs that I won't call poor quality but just plain old.  His irons are '67 Wilson Fluid Feels.  He usually shoots mid to high 70's and if he would get a set of clubs that were made after the Cold War ended I think he could break par.  We were playing in the Invitational a few weeks ago and my buddy and I were both paired with him.  We get to a shortish Par 5 and my buddy and I go at the green with our hybrids and both knock it on.  This guy, with plenty of length to get it there, hits a 1 IRON!  He skulls it about 150 yards.  No doubt his swing is good enough to shoot lower scores.  I will say he just plays the game for fun so he's probably not worried about his scores but a 1 iron from 1967 is tough to play.

I've been playing golf for around 25 yrs. As we go along there are many lessons to be learned out on the course. I remember many yrs. ago my friend and I were about to tee off when the starter said hold up I have a guy that is going to join you. We were 35 yr olds at the time that thought we were hot sh*t because we could break 100. This guy in his sixties shows up and says hold on I have to go in and pay. I check out his old faded torn bag and see that all of his clubs look like he picked them up one at a time from yard sales. Not one iron matched another and they all were old no name clubs. I had never seen a driver with such a small head. I started complaining to my friend that this was going to be a long day playing with this HACK and that maybe we could ditch him after a few holes.
When the guy returned from the club house I started up a conversation with the guy and commented on his clubs. He told us that he was retired, on a budget and picked up his clubs from yardsales. He seemed excited that he had been looking for a 1 iron and finally found one. He was a nice enough guy and I let up on my attitude.

When we finished the front he shot a 42. I was really impressed considering his garbage clubs. I didn't do that well with my latest and greatest clubs. On the back number 11 is a tough driving hole. The fairway slopes towards a pond that runs down the right side. He hits his drive down the middle but the ball ends up rolling into the pond. This guy has some kind of melt down with himself. He's upset and he tells us he needs to pull his head out of his arse. I figured this guy is done and I am running my mouth to my friend that the true hack is going to come out now. Boy was I wrong. After 11 this guy starts sticking pins. This guy ends up with a 33 on the back. So the guy ends up with a 75.

Lesson learned that day.

In high school I competed with all knock off clubs because I never was fully into the equipment perspective of the game. I played against all private schools where the kids had top of the line gear. I always got weird looks and was never taken seriously pre-tournament. I was shooting mid 30's in 9 hole tournaments and that changed their judgements for sure. My teammates would always rage on me about my clubs, but I was still #1 on the team. I guess what I am getting at as we all know, it isn't the gear that makes a golfer tremendously better it's how the golfer is able to make the best out of his/her equipment. What works for one person doesn't always work for others.

I got paired up once with a guy who worked at a driving range. He looked like a mutated serial killer and his "set" looked like it consisted of those old, random clubs they have laying around at a driving range that teenagers who don't have clubs can use.
Nothing matched.
Nothing looked newer than 1985.
Everything looked beat to hell. I pretty sure his driver was partially "shafted" with electrical tape.

Dude was sort of hunched over so he didn't hit anything very long. He did end up having one bad hole on his way to shooting something like a 40 for 9 holes before he slinked off to whatever rock he lived under.
