Many have asked about my son's room being a putting green and the carpet we used.  We did this about 4-5 yrs ago and many of our friends who play have done the exact same to rooms after seeing my son's.  We bought an indoor outdoor carpet that was not your prototypical "astro turf" type floor covering.  Walking barefoot on the original astroturf is uncomfortable and it doesn't putt very good either.
At a discount carpet outlet here in Austin, they had a HUGE roll that was 12' wide and turned out to be perfect.  It putts with no grain and is comfortable on the feet.  You can vacuum it and it will slow the stimp rating down quite a bit.  In the opposite, you can roll it, or walk on it a lot and it will set down and putt to about a 12 on the stimp meter.  Someone inquired about the carpet and I went to where we bought it as well as many of our friends and found they no longer have it and weren't sure exactly what it was.  They thought it was a special order that was never used.  I began looking for the same carpet and by chance, ordered some cup reducers from Big Moss Greens and found what they use is very similar. I searched and searched and had an online carpet outlet send me samples of what I thought was close once I talked to them on the phone.  I received the sample board and found that there is a Shaw carpet that is pretty close to what we have, and will work great in a room.
Here are some pics and what I found.
The closest to what we have is the
54170 Bella Vita 12' Unitary in color 70350 Grasshopper
Looking at the samples and what I got from Big Moss, it appears they use something very similar to the
Bella Vita Unitary in color 70351 English Ivy

If you really wanted to create a cool room, you could use a combination of the the Bella Vita for the green and do the edges and areas in the Club Champion 54192 or Fairway 54195.
Looking at this board is giving me some good ideas for updating our golf room :shok:
Here are the samples that I recieved:

Here is an idea you could do with 3 different types of the carpets for chipping and putting:

Here are some recent pics of Stratton's golf room.  We are out of wall space for him to nail up his awards.
We are going to completely redo his room this fall.  He has quite a collection of trophies and awards for a six year period.

That is awesome! What a room, and that Lime Green AJGA cover is so cool. I wish I could get my game to his level, but I started playing too late in life.

Very nice indeed.

Not sure if you know that Shaw Industries actually owns Southwest Greens.

You might have luck talking with your local SWG dealer.

Another tact is to check for a Mirage dealer in your area.  Nice stuff out of Arizona.

Did you cut into the subfloor for the holes or build up the carpet?

Henricogolfer:
I drilled a pilot hole in the sub floor and used a scroll saw to cut the hole out. On one hole , I used some tile adhesive mortar base to create a very subtle break around the hole.  Can't see it with the naked eye, but creates some break.

Very cool, looking to do something in my basement, drilling not a good option, but perhaps something raised. How deep is the hole? Looks about 3/4".

Henricogolfer-
For under $200 you can rent a 20amp core drill rig with a 4" core barrel. They are super easy to use. You need to keep the barrel wet while coring, but it is quick and easy. We did a friends garage and he did a small 2.5" and a 4" holes. Sun belt or any big rental place will have one.

This is really, really cool. I have an extra room and have been wondering what to do with it. This type of space would help me endure long winters in Indiana a little easier. I now realize one of the greatest gifts my dad gavasks was teaching me the game of golf at an early age. Your son will really appreciate this even more the older he gets. Thanks again for the great post and good luck to your son.

How deep is the hole? Looks about 3/4".

The hole is standard depth for a putting green.  The Subfloor is 3/4" plywood and below that is the cup installed.  I did have to build up from the bottom to get the cup set to the right depth.  It looks deceiving in some of the pics, because the "Big Moss" foam hole reducer is set int he cup.  Stratton practices a lot with the reduced hole size.  He uses this room almost if not daily to practice putting.  From hole to hole, it is about 13' Our computer room is directly below this room.  I have to admit, it annoy's my wife to no end to hear ball after ball make to sound of falling in the cup.  The first ball has a tale tale spiral roll sound that makes her yell to him to put a sock in the cup to mute it :)

Thanks for the nice compliments from everyone.  The room has been one of the best things we have done to perpetuate our son's love for the game.  We have had friends do the same and they have said the same.  I would suggest to anyone with kids that might be interested in the game, this is a great way to promote more time with a putter grip in their hand and less time with a joystick in their hand.  It is a space that you can share hours with them competing and playing at any time of the year.

Great set up! I would paint the subfloor that you can see above the cup white just to make it look like the real thing.

A couple quick questions,

1. Where did you find the mini flagsticks?
2. Could this be used for an outdoor green as well?

Thanks!

You can get them online, however.... I bought these from the local supplier here in Austin that sells golf equipment and chemicals to golf courses.

Yes, it could be used as an outdoor green, but wouldn't be great outdoor.  The Bella Vita covering is a indoor/outdoor covering, but It would not be as good as a full on poly polypropylene turf like Southwest Greens or the other artificial turfs that are professionally installed.  This carpet is better suited indoor and was used because it is much better on bare feet and is significantly less expensive than the others.

That looks awesome!

How did you install the turf.  Do you have to stretch it like normal carpet or do you just pull it a little bit?  Also do you still use the carpet foam under it or is it just  on the plywood?

What are some tips you can give for installing a setup like that?

thanks!

How did you install the turf.

Did not use a stretcher or taking strip.  No padding as well.  I used an carpet adhesive on the sub floor and just pulled it and kneed it to stretch it.  It lays perfectly is tight.

Great older post to dig up!  Can't wait for my kids to be old enough to be interested in golf, let alone to want a pimped out putting room!  Didn't even know those carpets were made... gonna have to look into that company... many thanks for the ideas!
