Hi Everyone -- I've been wanting to join a country club for awhile....but the prices in the Boston area are extremely high.  I've checked out Blue Hill and Charter Oak to name a couple, but the annual dues, initiations, minimums all add up to crazy prices.  Anyone know of a club or some type of private course offering a good membership deal?

Several years ago my wife was working in Boston. I am an avid golfer and I wanted to play as many courses as possible while I was up there. Look into B.A.G.S golf (stands for Boston Amateur Golf Society). They have a bunch of tourneys every week at a bunch of different courses in the state. It will give you a great idea of courses you could join. Average entry fee is like $50 each tourney and if you place, it pretty much pays for your next tourney. I probably played 20 courses during my 2 months up there.

Fastest greens in town = Norfolk C.C.
My Favorite that I got on through a member = The C.C. of Brookline

Guy that ran the golf society is Steve Ritter. www.bagsgolf.com

I play in Bags RI, and BAGS membership allows one to play other BAGS events (I.e.: Any Bags RI member can play Bags MA events, and vice versa). I like it to the point that it's great to play various courses and never have to guess where to play on any given weekend I want to. The part that kills me, especially being in the back of the pack sometimes is be prepared for 5+hr rounds sometimes. It's tourney golf, no gimmies, by the rules. Some guys really grind things out. If you can ignore that, for the most part everyones friendly. So, take a cart, and relax. :)

They play 2 courses a week, one on a weekday, one on a weekend. The weekday ones are usually at private courses. Being a working stiff, I can't make any.

This is the last year for Bags CT, as the guy that runs Bags CT is changing the name next year and doing his own thing apart from Bags.

Where do you live and what's your price range?   I'm pretty familiar with most all the private clubs in the area.

I live in the Natick area -- I would like to stay at under $5K/year including everything if possible.  Everything I have found at a decent course is much higher than that so far.   Thanks

For 5k or under you're looking at semiprivate clubs.  Shining Rock, Highfields, Blackstone National, Blissful Meadows.

Wedgewood Pines in Stow.  I was a member there for 6 years or so.  I don't like the course much, but it's a good deal.

Sterling  National is an excellent golf course, around $5000

Mt. Pleasant in Boylston.  Nice track, good deal

Marlboro CC, not far from you ... I don't like the course, but they're offering some deals.

The International in Bolton now allows some public play & they have some deals available, although you have to spend more than $5000.

There are a ton of semi-private courses that you can join fairly reasonable.  Forget Charter Oaks, course is awful, membership is worse.
