I started the year never breaking 100. Boke that one on my bday in May. Ever since I have been shooting mid to high nineties while leaving strokes on the course that made me think I could break 90.

I became addicted to golf this year and for the past 4 rounds of 18 I shot 101, 102, 99, 103. Its like I was going backwards. And its never the same problem that is adding strokes to my score

This morning I went out with my father in law who is newer to golf than me. We normally only play on a small 9 hole course where he is taking lessons. But today we played 18 at a course I havent played this year. I started the front nine with 8 straight bogeys and a par. I was feeling great with a 43 at the turn

The back nine started bogey, double, double, double. I said there goes ninety. Then I proceed to get 4 more straight bogeys. That leaves me with a total of 86 going into a par 3 18th hole. Its downhill and there is a tree overhanging over the left side of the green. I have been hitting left all day so I aim for right center of the green. I thought, land it on the green and 2 putt for 89. Well I pull it right in to the tree branch and am 40 yards short of an uphill hole. I pitch on to 25 ft. I am not a great putter mind you and dont think I've ever hit a put that long. Well, with my father in law on the flag I roll it straight in. Best golfing day of my short golfing life

Is this a 36 + 36 = par 72 course?

Not great at math, myself, but I read 5 bogeys and 3 doubles being +11?

So...36 + 11 = 47. 47 + 43 = 90? I am guessing your course is par 71, right?

In any case, I love hearing about people playing well. Great job on that final hole! Nice way to end the round, regardless of score. Now...on to 80, right? My recollection from back when I shot similar scores is that strokes will likely keep falling off fast until you plateau. Your next few rounds could keep trending lower. Keep going and break through that next barrier!

It was a par 70 course. I shot 43 in and 46 on the back. 8 over on the front, and 11 over on the back. So techincally still worse than bogey golf but I'll still take it.  I honestly didnt think I was going to break it after those back to back to back doubles. All 3 were due to hooking my driver so the 3 wood took over the rest of the day.

Excellent! Congrats on the great score.

Doesn't matter if it is on a par 70 or not. Breaking 90 is breaking 90.

Congrats, breaking 90 is awesome!  I just broke 90 as well last month on a par 70 course (shot 86).  It's the best feeling after working so hard.

Breaking 90 is about getting your putting down. Also pretend every hole is par higher than it is. Play par 5s as par 6, par 3 as par 4. Bogey golf will get you under 90. Throw in a couple actual pars and a birdie or two and you're at 85.

Thought I was going to finally break 90 yesterday... Got on a par 5 in 2 and then 3-putted. Bladed it across the green twice on 16. Finished 42 front, 48 back. So close, ugh! I feel like when I finally do, it is gonna be an 82 or something.

Congrats... I remember the feeling of posting my first score in the 80s.  Just wait until you break 80...it's double the pleasure!

I broke 90 today for the first time. Played 3 rounds this year all over 110. Decided to play for boggies, which meant chipping out into the fairway on some holes instead of difficult shots out of the rough. I didn't go for any par 5's in two and also "layed up" on par 4's where my angle of approach would require a perfect shot to get it close. My wedges were spot on inside 100 so I had tap ins for par on a few holes after laying up instead of going for the green.  only the ego makes you think that chipping to 5 feet from the rough is any different than playing from the center of the fairway at the perfect distance.

For the rest of the season I play this way. Manage misses, play it safe, and capitalize on good tee shots, approach shots by making putts Should be able to stick around 90 and and slowly work my way down as my ball striking improves.

I decided to play the same course again this morning to validate to myself my improvement........Shot a new personal best with a 86. I also missed two 5 footers, so it could've been even better. 16 over par. Finally better than bogey golf. I am absolutely addicted, think I'll go play 9 with my son at a small little course. Just getting him started. Thanks again for all the nice comments

Congrats again!  I broke 90 a few months ago, and haven't seen the 80's since.  Been close a few times, but couldn't seal the deal.  I think it all comes in time and with practice.

Congrats on the 90's guys!

So what are you guys doing practice-wise to make these improvements?  I'm stuck right now.  I have 5-6 meltdown holes (triple Bs) a round and it kills my score. How do you find consistency?

I have really been concentrating on my short game. 100 yards and in and putting. That has made a huge difference in my confidence when I am miss the green to get up and down to save par or bogey.

Well, you broke 100 on your birthday, and you broke 90 on mine !

I finally did it last month: 89 on a par-72 course. It felt great and I can imagine how you must have felt too.

Congratulations !

Congrats on breaking 90! It is definitely a great feeling to finally reach that milestone. I broke 90 for the first time on 4/28/12 with an 85. Took me a couple of weeks to do it again but now I'm consistently doing it and just shot my new low 83 on a tougher course on Thursday. Felt like I had a shot at breaking 80 for much of the round but just had 4 doubles that killed me. Still happy with an 83 though!

I've really focused on cutting down the length of my backswing (used to go well past parallel) and that's made a huge difference. I'm sure upgrading my irons from Burner Plus to Burner 2.0 didn't hurt!
