My wife's aunt and cousin were over today, and they really wanted to watch the opening ceremony at the london olympics. so, i bit...sat down for about 20 minutes.

WTF is wrong with british people?

it's still going on. i went down to the basement to flip on the golf channel. just needed a little bit of a vent. if these are the shining stars of europe, this universe is doomed.

My 8 year old said it best: "what does any of this have to do with the Olympics?"

I thought the evolution of the country until industrial revolution was good.  The rest was crap. Except for the James Bond and Mr. Bean scene

nurses and doctors dancing around hospital beds while voldemort hovers in the center and mary poppins floats down from the sky.

isn't it obvious?

i feel scarred from this experience.

A pity you didn't have the wisdom to explain to her that the Opening Ceremony celebrates the culture, heritage and character of the host City/Nation. The actual sports deal with the rest.

You can't cater for those who refuse to engage in events like these but many who did and had some knowledge of our history seemed to enjoy it. I thought the lighting of the flame by young, unknown  athletes was an inspirational idea and encapsulated the Olympic spirit perfectly.

WTF is wrong with British people? We are too polite mainly, not a problem for everyone clearly but one that perhaps we can overcome with time.

Interesting that you feel your opinion should govern the emotions of others. You didn't like it but millions did and not just those in the UK. It obviously helped if they can see over their own back fence and embrace a little of what the rest of the world has to offer. Not to mention having the understanding of what an opening ceremony is all about of course.

I was getting pretty drunk after dinner, and watched a bit.. Odd, but I enjoy seeing all the countries come into the stadium, and the lighting of the torch was a neat idea that they let all these "big" sports figures bring it in, but some unknown young kids who strive to be athletes were allowed to light the torch.

Past that.. It's pretty much a multi million dollar "play", and was bizarre. Most of the opening ceremonies are like that anyways.

You try to bring a bit of culture into their sad isolationist lives and do they thank you......no they fail to understand.

weren't you the guy telling someone he was a failure for not instructing his 8-year old about YOUR opinion. Seems when the shoe is on the other foot it's somehow different. You know what was touching? Muhammed Ali lighting the torch HERE in Atlanta 16 years ago. I think I have a good idea of what an opening ceremony is supposed to be about. What happened last night wasn't it.

LOL, it's hardly my opinion that an opening ceremony reflects the culture and heritage of the hosts...one only has to look at the televisual evidence available over the many years. It's plain to see that it is the case and for a grown man to think that his infant daughter has hit the nail on the head with an innocently misguided question then I feel justified in pointing out the error.

We actually voted Ali's lighting of the flame the greatest Olympic moment ever, it's not always about us over here you see....that's what can happen if you take time to watch and embrace another country's moment and not sulk in your basement.

no, but it is your opinion that that ceremony was anything other than bizarre and a waste of time. would you rather he say "yes, it's all about the british culture. aren't they just some f'd up morons?" his point was quite clear (although you seemed to have missed it)--this opening ceremony is ridiculous, and even an 8-year old can tell that. reflecting culture and heritage of the host is one thing. what happened yesterday was another.

have the common sense to call a spade a spade. that s*** was bizarre and missed the mark. everyone commenting so far who is NOT from your country has said so. why don't you understand?

also, i really fail to see what the problem is with watching golf channel in the basement. or is that another thing you british people just don't understand?

Yes you  are obviously right, what was I thinking?

I just found the basement a useful symbolic tool in this instance. I apologise for bringing such complexity into your life.

Actually if you delve a little more closely you will find reviews from across the globe (including the USA) and you will see some balance as well. They serve the purpose of disproving your comment about "everyone" not from the UK hating it.

Now I trust that will be all as I have now dismantled all of your inaccurate and absurd statements. Good day.

All the opening ceremonies I've ever seen have been really bizarre and London was no different. If you're from the uk then you are more likely to appreciate all the symbolism and tomfoolery. Some people will get it and think its marvellous. Some people won't and think its a bizarre waste of money.

But everyone's opinion here is moo (like a cows opinion... It doesnt matter) because no one in the history of mankind will ever beat that archer who lit the cauldron with his arrow in Barcelona '92.. Its a fact, baby. End of debate

How frigging cool was that? Better than the guy with the jetpack in LA '84.

Apparently reading comprehension isn't big on the other side of the pond.  I never specified if my 8 year old is a boy or girl.  You guessed wrong.

He's most likely mocking the idea that British people have about being so much more complex and educated than we are.

The wife and I watched it.  We both thought it to be boring.  I don't think anything will ever match up to the China Opening.  This is only my humble oppion.

Mine proved that not everyone hated it as you would like to believe. Yours proves nothing other than "some" people didn't like, a fact that I never denied as it would be a ludicrous assumption.

I am flattered that you chose to use my own style to try and have a final say but again, as in every post in this thread so far, you have failed.....and tsk, such language. I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul.
