I'm a fan and I'm not sure why. I've heard the criticisms of his personality and all, but for some reason I find myself rooting for him in every tournament I see him on the leaderboard. His swing facinates me and I've seen him hit some incrediblle shots through the years. But I also see the sadness of a manchild who really, really wants[ and maybe needs] to win that 1st major. As an American, I worry every Ryder Cup he's going to beat us single handedly. Why do I respect and admire this underachiever? There's something special [ in golf terms ] about this guy. What is it?

Sergio has tremdous talent but seems to lack both the drive and the mental toughness necessary to become one of the best players.

The two near-misses in the majors, seems to especially let the wind out of his sails.

He is the one of the finest ball striker I ever seen and a great player but more and more I feel like he is not enjoying professional golf.

I have seen same thing in Anthony Kim as well.

I think hes not going to win a major because in 99' he went up against Tiger, and lost, and then Tiger proceded to dominate after that, so it may have just killed Sergio mentally

*speculation*
(lets not turn this into a tiger thread)

I think you want it more than he does, and that's the problem.  He is now playing rounds in majors without a single warmup shot.  I think some pros spend too much time on the range before a round, but not a single warmup shot?

I want to root for him. But he has a long long history of saying over the top Woe is me things. The golf gods were against him at carnoustie, He hates Augusta National, He isn't good enough to win a major. On and On it goes. And all of this talk about winning a major is a little silly, Go win the greenbriar classic or the john deere. Get your confidence up, keep your mouth shut, put in the work and see what happens. The ability is certainly there.

I just see him as a tortured golfer.  Just one of many.  All the talent in the world, but just circumstances just keep biting him in the butt!  I mean, I still remember the Open Championship a few years back.  What was it?  A 5 footer to win or something and the thing hit the hole with too much speed.  I was crushed for him.  I knew he was done for.  He's never been my favorite golfer, but I felt for him.  As I've gotten older, I stopped rooting against anyone.  It really doesn't matter to them and it's pretty poor in my view.  That changed my mindset for a lot of guys.

I still think he'll get a major before he's done, but he seems to have this crushing self-doubt in the middle of a tremendous golf game.  It holds him back.  Until he figures that out, he'll contiinue to underachieve.

I don't think he lacks the drive or desire to win a major.  I think he just hasn't figured out to channel or control that desire so that he doesn't falter at crucial moments, or so that minor setbacks don't completely derail him.  But he wants it as bad as anyone.  Why else would he seem so deflated after his losses?  And he was certainly as happy as any other pro would be after he won the players.

If he ever improves his attitude, he will win that 1st major.  Look at Phil.  I think the reason it took Phil so long was because of Tiger.  Eventually, he figured it out.  I see this type of thing happening to Sergio.

Although, he can say and act like a little kid, he is one of the nicest guys as a playing partner.  I followed him during the Byron a few years ago, and he was constantly chatting with the other guys and saying good shot, even after he had hit a poor one.  I think he just needs to work on the attitude towards some bad breaks and he'll be fine.

Where are you coming up with this nonsense?  If he hit the ball like Pavin, I could see your point.  He's one of the longest hitters on tour.  He can shape shots better than most of the guys on tour.  How does that not suit North American courses?  Oh yeah, and he's one of the most accurate drivers, other than very recently.

He has the mental toughness of a wet noodle. Instead of accepting what the course gives him at any given moment he bemoans the terrible fate that has befallen him and consequently packs it in

The day I saw Sergio spit in the cup I lost all respect for him and don't care if he ever wins again. You don't molest children, you don't sell secrets to the enemy and you don't **** a loogie into a golf cup for the group behind you because you missed a putt. EVER.
He has blamed the golf gods, claimed that he doesn't get the decisions in his favor that Tiger gets, and has whined hat he is mistreated by officials.
He appears to think that he is just supposed to win because he is Just entitled.

Mentally, he is still a child with no heart.  Corey pavin who has so much less gifts than Sergio has 50 times the heart.  That is why Sergio whines and moans.

Anyway, Sergio would have 2 majors if it wasn't for Harington.

I have always gone for Sergio and always will.

I always root for Sergio, but he is a constant source of disappointment. Every time I think he is showing signs of having adjusted his attitude and lost the penchant for self-pity, he does it again. The Open Championship this year was a good example. He actually played pretty well, but his shoulders drop and head goes down as soon as something doesn't go his way and he dwells on the negatives rather than forgetting it and moving on quickly.

Don't know if he's ever seen a sports psychologist, but until he does, I can't see him getting the major I would so dearly love him to.

Sergio probably isn't the most confident golfer in the world, but his woe-is-me attitude gets exaggerated too because he's brutally honest. You go inside for a beer after a tournament or qualifier at any club anywhere and there's 10 guys talking about the horrible break they got on hole 12, or the time they ended up in a divot etc...

Not everyone is like this. Some guys never complain. But Sergio reminds me of a lot of guys i've met who weren't bad guys. He doesn't seem happy at all sometimes, but he's a pretty emotional person obviously.

If Ernie can win a major in 2012 and Darren Clarke can win a major. Sergio can. Both of the former were written off by countless people

He lost me when he complained about rulings in a playoff in Australia. Petulant whiner.

BTW - to equate spitting into the cup with pedophilia is in the same category of exaggeration that Sergio has for his bad breaks -  over the top.
