Hey guys, recently bought a used set off of ebay, authenic ping s56's and have a problem with the process of "delamination" on 6,7,8,9, and W. i attached the 7 iron which is the worse. I was wondering, due to my tournament schedule i won't be sending them in anytime soon, what they would do. Would they just replace the 7 iron or 6,7,8,9, and W or the whole set? Any feedback would be appreciated thanks!

Have the same issue.. Figured it was just from a lot of wear and tear with the clubs, Let me know what they do for you

the plating is peeling 100% i'm just hoping all s56's don't do this because i'm not moving to a different set of irons, i love these too much.

Most are doing it..
PING is no longer the company with durable irons.

yeah not really concerned with durable irons seeing as though this is my 4th set this year. i just love the look and my scoring average has dropped 3 strokes since switching.

Well for me, when I find a set that I like which is the S56 and I have issues that require me to send my gamers in and possibly hurt my game, I care..

I am going to send my entire set to PING and see what they have to say.. I want a new set, but odds are I'll just experience more issues.

i got an email from them saying it would take them 3-4 days to inspect the clubs plus shipping there and back so i'm hoping they just replace the whole set.

I've already had a couple clubs from my set replaced.. I didn't expect to have any more issues, I was actually just coming to accept the fact that the faces wear like crap, and the leading edges are going to flake...
Then another chrome bubble...

I don't understand why Ping has to plate their irons now, when the sound/feel is tuned via port.  They should have kept their classic raw cast look, ala s59.  Maybe by plating they thought they would bring in more forged iron players.  I had the same problem with my s57's that I'm having with my s56's.

Basically it's a cast iron that wears like a forged iron...

A positive is the loft and lie angles don't go all over the place..

The chrome finish is bubbling off of the irons and not holding up well in general.

I bought a used set of S56's to try them out and they are pretty worn as well. I'm not overly worried about it because I doubt the grooves will wear out like a forged club....at least not nearly as fast.

They do. The outer plating will wear off.

I understand that you are having issues with your s56s which SUCKS!!!!  However and trust me I am not trying to downgrade your situation but I think stating that his set will have problems based on yours having issues is a bit biased.

Do you think that this issue is something that will happen to every set of newer PING clubs?  I ask because that is a large accusation to make based off of your personal experience along with a FEW others that have had the issue. Knowing that there are thousands that we haven't heard about.

Just trying to scope the magnitude of the situation with out bias. Again not trying to bash or downgrade your claims.

Cheers.

It sounds like a production issue.  Maybe heads are not cleaned enough before the plating goes on, or maybe there is no 'strike' plating applied to help hold the chrome on the steel. Just an uneducated guess.

I hit somewhere around 1000 balls or more a week, most people don't do that, I was making real comparisons off of real events that have actually happened to me in more than one circumstance.. The S56 irons do not hold up like a cast iron should. Period.

Just saw this S56 set on the bay.   Close up picture of one of the irons shows the problem clearly on the leading edge:

Again, not trying to bash just understand. I have the i20s and have seen posts with the same issue. I will definitely keep an eye now. I hope they don't have the issue cause these things play like heaven.

That's also my issue, I hit these better than everything else. But I don't want to be constantly sending my stuff off to PING.
I'm going to request a refund and hope they leave my home club out of it.

Ping is the only golf company I know of that plates 17-4 stainless steel irons.  17-4 is quite durable and hard in it's own right; an unplated 17-4 iron will significantly outlast a carbon steel club, and the plating adds further to that durability gap.  So basically, what you guys have is one of the most durable irons ever manufactured.  It's not good that the plating is flaking off the edges of some clubs, but regardless, these are supremely durable irons.  I doubt anyone would be complaining if there was no chrome at all, so it's not exactly panic time here.  Worst case is you have a few flakes, but that killer durable 17-4 SS is there to provide years of lasting service in the same way Eye 2 irons are still serving players 25+ years after their release.

I agree with everything you said. In your opinion, why do you think Ping felt it was necessary to plate such a durable material?

That's like spray painting the Washington monument.
