Having won the Golf Digest Editor's Choice for drivers in 2006, it was no doubt a challenge to improve on the original all titanium SasQuatch driver. What made the original great, makes the new SasQuatch Sumo even better - a new NIKE PowerBow geometry results in a higher MOI of 4950g cm2 vs. 4650g cm2. Therefore, SasQuatch Sumo delivers even more distance and forgiveness.
I don't know if I am mentally ready for a square driver yet. So I just demoed the more traditional looking one at a local Pro Golf. I am going back tomorrow to pick it up. The deals already done, I just need to bring in my 'old' driver and trade.
I hope it is as good on the course as it was on the monitor. I like the feel of it the club and shaft. I'll post more after I play a few rounds.

OK, Update. I got the driver and played it today. It's the straightest driver I have ever hit. Pulls went right but straight and all ended up on the left side of the fairway. Most everything went down the middle. I hit no fades with this driver. I think I hit all the fairways, missed none.
Length: It goes far but I set no personal records. It was very consistent. I hit the middle of the club all day long. It is so easy to hit if you cannot use this driver I would suggest soccer or bowling.
Other: I am not sure yet if the ball can be worked much since I hit everything so straight. I can hit it high or low, depending how I address the ball and how I tee it up. The black part of the top makes the club head appear smaller, which I do like.
Overall I think it's a winner and it's now in my bag. =)

The sound is fairly loud, but I'd say it's on par if not more quiet than the rest of the 2007 Drivers. As for the Proto, it's going to give you a medium launch. For a slightly lower launch, go with the UST Proforce V2.
I demo'ed this driver the other day...and wow is it straight. I have been fighting a fade/slice lately in my titleist driver, and I could let this rip without fear of slicing...
I love the proto shaft, but am thinking about getting the 75 or 85 gram shaft instead of the 65 that is in the stores.
I just built the nike sumo clone 10.5 with a harison striper 60 stif shaft
My GIR (greenss in regulation) has moved from 65% to 90% over night
My distance has gone from 240 yards to 290/310 yards
I will be replacing my woods with the sumo clones also
I have the Sumo non square head and have been hitting it for about one month. All I can say is grip it and rip it. I played today and hit every fairway and drove 2 par 4 greens. This driver is so forgiving that even when it feels like I totally shank it the ball may leak off to the right a little but it stays playable. I have switched my driver almost every year for the past 5 years , but I think I will be hitting this one for a long time. I am not sure what Nike is doing but they are doing it right. I love this club and their 2004 Slingshot irons, and I was never a Nike or Tiger fan, until these clubs.
Just got my driver and it feels hott! I am having a hard time going at it with the Diamana Blue Board 83X. Is it possible that the PINK Grafalloy Bi-Matrix is going to make it back in the driver. Maybe a steel shaft is teh way to go for me.
I just bought a SUMO with a 10.5* loft tonight. I had 8 drivers that I picked out when I was getting fit and it wasn't one of them. While they were taking the security tags off all the drivers, they had me warm up with the Sumo since it was sitting there. Well, after hitting hundreds of balls with a bunch of drivers, I left with this. It wasn't the longest driver, but it was close. However, it did hit the straightest, which is what I was looking for. I stayed with the stock shaft in stiff flex. I thought it was fine. I was putting up awesome numbers, so I figured, why change shafts now; I can always do that later if something goes astray.
For those interested..... with the Sumo 10.5* loft, I had a swing speed around 99-102mph and was carrying the ball around 253 yards on average.
I'll update after I try it out on the course. I'm playing the next two days, so I should have plenty of on-course feedback soon.
UPDATE
Well, I subbed for my dad in his golf league wednesday. This was my first outing witht he SUMO. It Isn't a very serious league and most people drink while they play. I had a great drive off the first tee. I started drinking after that and the new driver was giving me a little too much confidence. I had managed to convince myself that I could swing as hard as I want and the club would work out the kinks. I was terrible wrong and hit a few very offcenter driver that got me into some trouble. It was's a very good round, but I had fun due to the natuer of the league.
Last night, I played the back 9 with one of my friends who works at my country club. He runs the pro shop and all the tournaments and leagues. He's a pretty good golfer at around an 8 handicap. I was taking a nice easy, smooth swing. The ball was exploding off the face of the SUMO and was staying mostly straigh, with a slight fade a couple times. I didn't have a bad drive with that all night. Out of 7 fairways, I hit 6, and the one I missed wasn't by much (landed in the fairway and kicked right into the rough). Great club. Suprisingly descent feedback from it as well. If I put a bad swing on it, it'll fade the ball.... unintentionally. However, my average drive has gained about 5 yards of carry so far, and it's straighter, which was what I was really looking for. I ended up at 4 over on the back 9 last night, which is a little better than average for me (I'm around a 16 handicapper). A large part of that number was the great positioning I had after my drives.
I'de definetly recommend hitting this club. I didn't even want to hit it when i was getting fitted and I ended up leaving with it.
i bought this driver on ebay new for $150 wich is an awsome price compared to $300 from golfsmith. i realy like this driver, it feels realy stable in your hand and it feels solid at impact. there is a par 4 at my home course that is about 400 yards long, i have never been able to drive it till i got this driver, hamered it right down the middle to land in the middle of the green. as for the sound it is loud, very loud, but i like it, i like peaple looking at me to see what made that super loud sound. super strait too, i can hit eny fairway unless i try to john daly it (wich i do often). over all its a winer in my bag, dont buy another driver without trying this one. go nike!!!
Just got the Nike Sasquatch Sumo and played with it for the first time yesterday. 9.5 degree loft and UST stiff shaft, right now don't know why anyone would ever look for another driver. Hit every fairway and most all over 260 up to 285 uphill, an increase of 30 to 45 yards from my old Big Bertha 454. Even on a mishit, it went straight although only about 225. I am going to trade the Big Bertha 454 for the 3 wood sasquatch tomorrow.
Have been playing the Sumo (non square, 8.5, stock Diamana S shaft) a bit more recently as I was about to sell it. It is so different to the 905R that it took me a few full rounds to really work out how to use it properly.
As far as I can see it is very low spin and low launching, even for an 8.5. Last week I played in strong winds and it performed very well. Basically, it's a no hassle, grip and rip, down the middle machine.
It does not feel particularly sweet or hot but it gets the job done very well indeed.
The Nike is now in the gamer bag and may well partner the new R7 forged that I have coming this week. Sad the say goodbye to the MP33s and the 905R but there you go.
I liked the previous SQ when I first saw it but it seemed kind of bland. The updated look and the deeper body really perfected the previous SQ. I've wanted to get one of these ever since I laid eyes on it but I wanted to give my Ping G5 a little more time to win my heart back. Every time I would visit a golf store though I couldn't help but want the SUMO more and more. finally a few weeks back I gave in and bought one. I really don't know what to say but WOW, I really feel like it was money well spent. I bought mine with the ProForce V2 66 Gram Stiff but I soon after replaced it with my favorite shaft of all time (Graffaloy Epic S-Flex). Words cant explain how perfect this club is, it goes 15-20 yards further than my G5 with the same shaft. It's also more accurate and easier to shape shots with the SUMO. It's just a better club overall. I tried many other new drivers but this was the perfect one for me soundwise, launchwise and otherwise! I LOVE IT!!! 5 stars!!!
Go for it! Demo it and enjoy more fairways and more yardage...
I couldn't agree more. I took the plunge last night and got rid of my R5 TP with an 79g V2 x flex. This Sumo with the Proto shaft is a missle launcher. I love the ball flight more and it is about 7-8 yards further carry that my old TM. What a great driver.
I've had a Ping G2 for a couple of years now, and tried the Nike Sasquatch Sumo (non square) just for the heck of it. I picked one up for $120CDN and was just going to resell it for a profit, but decided to take it to the range along with a Cleveland HiBore. The HiBore sucked. All over the place. The Nike blew away my G2 as far as accuracy. Put an easy swing on it, and dead straight, very penetrating flight. Let loose on it, and it will bring out the flaws in your swing but nowhere as bad as the G2. Way more forgiving. Just kept hitting it STRAIGHT! Distance wise, it's about the same as my G2, but due to the penetrating trajectory, roll may be further. Couldn't tall on the range. Had the stock Diamana shaft in it, and was great....suprisingly! I played the Lucky 13 degree, and it really doesn't seem to fly like a 13. Was lower than my 11.5 G2.
There are many other drivers that are as straight or better, yet LONGER.
I really don't understand why people flock to Nikes....
They just don't have the tech yet....
I became a NIKE guy after trying "most" of the others... Dunno why you dont think they have the "tech" yet...
I think their wins on tour prove they have some tech
Couldnt stand the Super Quad. The D1 and D2 IMO are prety ugly and boring not too mention kida funny in my hand? The calloway FTs are nice but not as long for me... I picked the Nikes cause they feel good and work well for me...
Im yet to find a driver as straight as my Sumo... and one that is workable as my old SQ... but hey each to their own aye

I must not be a tech guy then I have bought and sold or hit the following list
Callaway
Cobra
Mizuno
Titleist
Taylor Made
MacGregor
Ping
Adams
and I stuck with NIKE even after being a Nike hater, I now have a Nike driver, 3 wood and Slingshot and blade irons..... love them all
And here is my list of irons I have owned and played
Cobra
Callaway
Cleveland
Titleist
And I bought and stuck with Nike irons...................Just imagine how good the Nike golfers would be if they had technology! Since I am sure Nike doesn't have the money to pay for R & D LOL
Just bought a new SQ SUMO 9.5 few weeks ago. It replaced my Ignite 9/5. As far as distance, SUMO is slightly longer than the Ignite. Its just harder for me to work a draw with the SUMO as the clubhead feels harder to turn during swing causing me to overcompensate and hook some balls to the left. Sound is really obnoxious, but not that bad when you get used to it. I need to change shaft, unfortunately, shaft in Ignite was .350 now SQ are .335, so i cant pull out of my ignite.
Got this driver with 9.5* in VS 65 Proto stiff shaft. Great combination for me. Hit it more consistently than my G5 with Epic shaft. as a result the Nike has knocked the G5 out of my bag.
Hey just wanted to chime in on this thread since I recently picked one of these up from gppgolf.com for about 150$.
I am playing the 9.5 with a 65-G VS Proto Stiff flex and this thing is a cannon for me.
I played yesterday for only the second time in the past 5 weeks and I only missed 2 fairways which were both big hooks when I came too far inside on takeaway and then flipped it over trying not to push it.
This driver is just ABSURDLY forgiving, there are a few drives that I hit yesterday that I could feel were super low on the face or high on the face, way in on the heel or out on the toe and they still go dead straight. This combo also seems to produce a high but penetrating trajectory and ABSURD amounts of roll, sometimes upwards of 25 yards.
This club is a great deal for the price and even though it looked awfully closed to me when I got it (my usual miss is a hook when I do miss it, although driving is also my strongest part of the game most days) I am a believer after my first round with it.
A++ offering from Nike which is now at an extraordinarily cheap price.
I previously hit a Cleveland Launcher but had not touched clubs in a few years....so went to local shop get on analyzer and see what is available on the used rack.
Picked ones I had hit before but that is not a lot of choices since I only played for one year before stopping for 4 years. So I told him I was a HIGH (nosebleed high) handicapper and had a bad slice or pull...ball was all over the place.
Hit Cleveland to warm up......then went to the new HiBore for a few swings.....showed the reason I was all over place with driver is I had developed an OUTSIDE TO INSIDE swing and reverse pivot. So started working on getting my swing a bit aligned.
Then I also hit the a new TaylorMade DRAW....a new COBRA....NICKENT....MIZUNO. We noticed I got better hits with one particular club so started looking at differences and noticed it had a larger grip...Mid Size Lamkin Crossline. So he said he had another club with a MidSize grip...and pulled in the Sumo. I hit it just as far as the others and sometimes further due to hitting it much straighter. Off center hits were playable.....but I was still topping ball.
He got me hitting it straight with two more visits and comparisons with COBRA, CLEVELAND and TM........the Sumo kept coming out with better drives which were not always further but always straighter.
It appears someone bought it...hit it a few rounds and then wanted the square Sumo2 and traded it in. So I got it for $199 months before they went on sale and this thing could not have been played more than one round.
My bottom line...I am a hack when it comes to hitting off the tee and is my biggest obstacle now in trying to get game confidence. Working on solid irons now with short game...and then to Driver. When I hit it square and smooth I carry about 230-250.......even with the 9.5* loft and stock S shaft.
I would recommend it to anyone without a doubt that has sporadic results with current driver and are willing to step outside of what they like and go with what works. I was set on buying another Cleveland likely the 460....and walked away with a club I had never ever considered.
Wow. I just hit the new 5000 (not the one pictured above, the newer one released feb 2nd 08) and it is a great driver. I have hit and HATED every Nike driver since they made that first ugly blue thing (was it like 320cc? in the late 90's). The new 5000 is really a different animal than the previous sumo. It sounds much better although still loud and nike-ish. What is most impressive is the performance on off center hits. I felt like I made a few mediocre passes and still hit good shots. I don't buy anything based on one day and the launch monitor was broken but if the numbers are as good as they felt my D2 could end up on the side line and I have been a titleist guy since the 975d. Well done nike.
I have been by tradition a callaway guy when it comes to woods. I have the FT-3, FT-5, X driver just to name a few. I went to a sumo saturday demo and I hit the 5000 and I must admit that I was amazed by the consistency I got from this club. I purchased it a couple of days afterwards and event though I am hitting the ball as far as my FT-5 I must admit that with the Nike Sumo 5000 I am keeping it in the fairway a lot more. I am not able to work the ball as much as I can with the FT-3 or the FT-5 but being in the fairway a lot more is a good tradeoff for me. I will say that I do hit the ball much higher and on windy days it makes it harder when driving the ball but I conitnue to work with the driver to lower the ball flight or hit it high at will.
Bought Sumo in October at the PGA superstore after trying out some other drivers on the launch monitor the stock regular flex 9.5 Sumo seemed to be the best so i purchased it. After a couple good rounds with it I
started to hook and slice the ball like crazy. The regular shaft was just to flexible for my swing causing the club head to be far behind the ball at impact from where my hands were. The feel is terrible compared to my titleist 975j which i can bomb down the fairway every time. Regardless of me putting a good swing on this driver it always felt so hallow and the ball went nowhere. Its out of my bag and for sale if anyones interested.
Nike will have a hard time winning me back to their products. http://www.golfwrx.c...black%20eye.gif

Yup - sure sounds like it's the club's fault,,,,,,,,
I picked one of these up in 8.5 loft with X-Stiff comp nt shaft and actually like the feel and distance I am getting.
I have a 454 Callaway with the same shaft and this club seems to be longer as well as easier to control.
I have only hit on the driving range but I am looking forward to getting on the course with this club.
I have never been a nike fan but this driver definitely impressed me. It is longer than my L4VX which still only has stock shaft in it.
I am going to be reshafting L4V X so we shall see which one wins out. I will post back results once I get on the course with the drivers.
the first day i used it i had 8 drives over 300 yards down the middle, i picked up at least 20 to 30 yards on my hibore, i love this club . i dont even have to swing hard, its as if the ball explodes off this club
is does not sound bad and looks ok
easy to fade and draw
also, one of the the guys in my four some used it and picked up 40 yards over his best drive of the day (only comparing drive for one hole) his normal driver was a TM Quad.
I've got the 4950 with the Adila 65g VS Proto Stiff. 9.5 degree. I like everything but the ballooning effect I get when I catch all of it. Is there a shaft out there that will feel similar but lower my spin a tad?
I just replaced my Titleist 905R with the Sumo 10.5 with ProForce V2. I will say that this club is noticably more forgiving, and notiveably longer than the Titleist. Certainly no magic club, but distance and direction were immediately improved with this combo. My love affair with Titleist is getting stale.
I really like this driver, switched to it from a Hibore XL Tour, noticable straighter. Don't get me wrong, when I would hit the XL on the screws it was crazy long, I just have no business play a driver with any kind of open club face.
