Long story short, I love older SC tei3 putters, but hate the black oxide finish. It wears off easily, especially if not properly cared for, and contributes to all the rust bucket tei3's for sale on the used market today. Considering the tei3 insert is what hits the ball, gives the feel, etc... why not use a more durable finish on the rest of the putter? Makes no sense to me and I think Scotty dropped the ball on this one.

Otherwise, I find this to be the most desirable Scotty Cameron line of putters ever made. Of all the Scotty Cameron putters I have used, the feel of these Tei3's is by far the best in my opinion. A proverbial home run he hit when he designed this putter. These putters were worthy of the "Art of putting" head covers that donned them. However, I am now going through the expensive and aggravating process of getting all of my Tei3's refinished. I own five now and when I am done, not one will have the black oxide.

Anyone have any pics of Tei3's that are not black oxide?

Whether it is yours or a pic you saw, post it here.

Lamont Mann no longer works on Tei3's, but did this one in teflon impregnated nickel...

I bought this from Torreyrat last night (via Ebay), the finish was done by BOS....

I have a TeI3 in 3x black. This one has seen quite a bit of use and, everything considered, has held up very well.

Next time I take pics, I'll have to polish the insert first.

Is the 3x a triple coat of black oxide?

Never heard of it.

Thanks for chiming in man.

The northern lights finish looks amazing.  I also love the Del Mar 2 but can seem to ever find one in my price range.

I'm not sure what it is exactly but it's a very flat black. Nothing like the stock finish on the TeI3's. The stock finish is very glossy and smooth, almost like a nice deep, rich and fine gun bluing (like on my Browning Citori Grade VI). The finish on my CT TeI3 however is very flat w/no gloss at all. Rather than reflecting light and producing any sort of glare, it just seems to absorb light. It's a very nice finish, I've really grown to like it.

Personally, I love the stock black oxide finish on the TeI3's. I agree with you 100% on the durability however. A lot of times, I find myself bagging my Button Back in inclement weather so that I don't need to worry about cleaning up and oiling my TeI3 after the round. At the end of the day though, like my Citori, it's just a finish and a finish is easily (and inexpensively) redone. For whatever reason, the glare from the stock finish doesn't bother me either. Perhaps everything else that the putter has going for it, along with just how good the stock finish looks, makes up for that small detail? I can't say for sure.

Thanks man, the Browning example  holds meaning. Sounds like a nice finish option. Assuming it is more durable than black oxide, I would be interested. I too love the look of the black oxide, a timeless companion aesthetically to the Tei3's. But the durability is my turn off. Like you mentioned, I don't want to leave it at home because it is wet outside or the greens were recently fertilized. Much like shooting skeet, who would leave a Citori at home because it was drizzling outside? Not me. I want a finish on the putter that is tough and deserving of being placed on such a special putter. One that I can play with in any condition. Thanks for your input on the 3x black.

Funny thing too. I'll take my Citori's out in the worst weather imaginable but, for some unknown reason, I'll grab the BB more often than not if the weather is bad. Strange, I know, but that's just the way that it is. It's probably due to the fact that I know that as soon as I get home I'll get oil on the shotguns and all will be fine. Often times with my golf clubs though, it will be a few hours before I make it home and am able to wipe down, clean and oil things up. In those few hours, it's possible to wear on the finish some. I really just need to get in the habit of keeping a micro-fiber cloth in the truck and wipe it down after my round. Then I probably wouldn't care as much. Ah well, gets the BB in my bag once in a while though, I suppose that's a good thing.

Hebron,

Very nice putter. I just got off the phone with Sherri at BOS and that was one of the finishes we talked about. It is the same durability wise as the black oxide, but has some obvious aesthetic differences. Very nice looking finish.

Rebby,

I also asked about the 3X black. It is in fact black oxide, shiny on sole, satin on sides, and mat on top. Same degree of black oxide finish, just in varying degrees of shine. That is the 3X black from BOS at any rate. As for Nippon shafts, you can send your putter to Chip Usher at Usher Golf (website) in Savannah,Ga. Awesome guy.

$200 in 7.5/10 condition from proclubs?

I tried to send you the direct link after telling you about it, but the putter was sold.

Hope you got that one, it was a gem.

Either way, congrats. You just bought a sweeet stick.

I was tempted to buy it myself.

Incredible putter for $200. I would take it over two brand new Scotties. Killer putter.

If I understand correctly, the 3X black from SC is different than what BOS offers. Although... It may still be a form of black oxide. I know for one, the SC 3x black (or least the version of it on my putter) is matte on all surfaces. From the sounds of it however, it won't be quite as durable as you'd like. What you really want want is a version of black hard chrome. I have a few 1911's done in a matte black hard chrome and they are ultra durable and have a nice matte finish. You could go with a straight black hard chrome and it would look a lot like the standard finish as well. I don't know know of anyplace that offers this finish on a golf club however. In fact, black hard chrome was/is enough of a PITA that my refinisher stopped using this finish on pistols as well (on a side note, I have an 07 FFL so I have more firearms refinished than golf clubs in a given year).

No longer have mine, kind of regret it, although I wish they were heavier. Finish wise, I like the pro platinum finish a lot on the TeI3's. Just wish Cameron would leave the insert alone rather than plating over it.

Great minds think alike. I found a pic on Torreyrat's site of a "black ice" done by BOS. I called them, but they said it is not a finish they often do. Apparently it is a very fickle process and results are not as predicable as they would like. Sharp looking though.

I am thinking of doing my Newport TEI3 in a satin oil can through BOS, mainly because I find the black oxide to be too glossy especially on sunny days.  Anyone have any TEI3s done in oil can and how do you like it?  (sorry - don't mean to thread jack but feel it is relevant)

I just got the best email ever.

Torreyrat (George) told me about a limited run of black polymerPosted Image

So the Del Mar 2 long slant I bought is going to be black, rather than white.Posted Image

Something about the ghost didn't sit well with me. Laugh now, but I had emailed him about just doing black oxide on the putter. A weak moment of desperation, a nostalgic side I got in touch with, brain fart, I don't know. But I was second guessing the white polymer. He then tells me he can get BOS to do "jet black" polymer on a 'limited basis'.

Safe to say, beers are being popped open at my home. Kind of like a party, but only one person. ha ha.. Anyway, I am super excited about this. I get the durability I want in a gamer and the traditional look (somewhat) of the Tei3. Best of both worlds. I am also having the face milled. As a different twist, I am having the polymer done in black as well. No white line around the insert, no white dots on the black. Jet Black all the way around. Paint fill will be red/white. Red/white midsize Iomic grip going on 149 g Nippon shaft. Can't wait.

You're missing the point. If you're going to do black polymer, skip the paint fill and put an all black grip on it. That will look sharp!

Black poly finish "jet black"
black silicone insert (no white line around tei insert or white dots on back)
All metallic silver paint fill
BMF stamped on left side of face for some tude Pulp Fiction style
Nippon 149 g shaft and of course, blacked out Pingman

Think old school chopper meets Scotty Cameron.

Get some.

Perhaps just an illusion in the photograph, funny lighting perhaps.

But is the teryllium insert flush with the face of the putter?

Looks like it is recessed.

The silicone looks odd.

Again, probably just an illusion, but got me curious enough to ask.

Yeah, the experience was fine. You just need to be prepared to be without your putter for at least 3, closer to 6 weeks. Mine took 5 weeks, which is still within their recommended time frame.

I still haven't taken any pics yet, but the tuxedo finish is exactly what I wanted! I was so tired of having to "baby" the black oxide to keep it looking nice. Granted the tuxedo doesn't shine like the black oxide, but it is still very much black and very smooth.

Again, sorry for no pics. My clubs stay at the office cause I usually go hit balls on my lunch. I can walk to the driving range from my office. I will try to remember to take pics.
