I find it strange how many people doubt the possibility of a round like this.  It was his home course, the course was short, he's a proven player, and like someone else above said, the law of averages eventually says it will happen.

Hell, I played with thrillhouse of this forum last week and he holed out from off the green 3 times in the first 5 holes.  Do you know the odds of that happening?

I've also seen a 18 handicap shoot 34 on the front 9 one day.  He never hit a drive over 200 yards and made 3 40 footers in a row.  shot 50 on the back 9.

If you're around the game long enough, you'll see everything eventually.

Agree with isaac, you are going to get hot sooner or later.  It makes it easier that it was his home course, a short course with buddies.  55 is unbelievable.

Very impressive! The guy had his game going that day. Curious to see how he does following that up in his mini tour events. Suddenly the spotlight is on!

Best of luck!

I'm by no means doubting the story at all, but when I read a certain detail in the story my BS meter started making noise.

One of his playing partners is a landman in OKC and a former college golfer, it means there's a 99.999% chance the guy works for Chesapeake (their land department has a habit of hiring graduating college golfers or former club pros so they'll have ringers in all the tournaments in the area), and if there is one thing I've learned working in this industry it's never, ever, ever for any reason whatsoever trust a single word that comes out of the mouth of a Chesapeake landman.

Again, I'm not trying to take anything away from this guy's incredible round.

Haha!  That's funny.  I'm a Landman out in Midland and I agree about Chesapeake...

If the guy has witnesses I don't doubt he shot the score.  Why all would lie just to say he shot 55?  All the publicity this is going to generate isn't worth the hassle in the long run.

My question to the board is how many of you have shot a low score in relation to your handicap and fell apart the second day?  It happens.  I'm a 10-12 handicap and shot 75 in the club championship the first day.  I was playing with my friends so is was relaxing and they all were pulling for me.  Second day I played with strangers and the heat was on.  Fell apart and shot 91.  Still finished in top three but I choked.  It's not a 55 but this guy pretty much did the same thing when he came back with a 75 in the mini tour event.

Hmmm....Nice round, but I notice he had a couple pars mixed in there. Left a few strokes out there. If I were him, I would get in touch with Sean Foley and change his swing. Hes obviously not quite good enough.   ;)

while he's new as an (aspiring) pro, he's not empty of accomplishments. He won the Oklahoma Open, which is our state's biggest professional event that goes back to 1910. Several past champions went on to win majors. Here's a few:

There's additional information released on GC that has made this story even more interesting and amazing.  Apparently he went out the night before and had a few too many.  Needless to say he wasn't 100% the next morning and didn't even want to play.  His buddies literally dragged him out to the course with no warm-up on the range, and went straight to the first hole.  Also, it had rained a lot the previous day and they said there were a ton of shots that had mud balls. He said he wasn't even hitting the ball particularly well hitting only few fairways.  Simply amazing.

I traveled a bit with Rhein when I was playing the Hooters tour.  He is for real and this is totally believable.  He can flat out play.

Sent a text, interested to see if he responds.  Not sure if he still has the same phone #.

Ummm...... this is not exactly true, he was at a grad party the night before and home by 10.  Just "didn't wanna to get out of bed for a 8:15 tee time."

I actually don't find it that strange because we know there are an abundance of golfers who if they witness a 68 shot on a local muni they can't understand why that golfer is not trying for the tour. The doubters are probably just hybrids of that guy.

Never noticed how hip Rodney's outfit was in that movie.  White belt with the pastels.  Funny to think they dressed his character as obnoxious as they could but it's actually quite trendy for today's standards.

I absolutely cannot believe it took 77 posts for someone to ask. Thank you.

For him to shoot 75 the next round is not unbelievable. Tour players regularly take up to 10 strokes more the day after going low.

For the doubters, I don't see what he has to gain by making this up. He's not going to get a sponsorship out of it, and if he doesn't go pretty low again (and again) he will just be considered a guy who had a lucky day - by the relatively small group of people who remember this story in two months... Same goes for holes-in-one.

Most of my best rounds ever were the day after a night of heavy drinking and not too much sleep the night before. Someone analyze that for me!
