What kind of shots are you expecting to get?  Where would the photographer be standing?  Are you talking about video for the shots?  What's the budget?

If it's going on the course, you want small.

IMO, the best compact camera on the market today is the Canon s100. The s95 was the previous model and has most of the features in the '100, and should be able to be had a bit cheaper (s100 is still pretty steep).

These are becoming the standard pocket camera that you'll find serious photographers packing (aside from the Leica D-LUX/Panasonic Lumix LX series).

Or just switch your phone to an iPhone 4S. The camera on that thing is truly amazing for its size.

Photographer would be standing behind the golfer. Want to capture shots from no more than 150 yards. Just want good quality to watch the ball get on the green. Budget is  couple hundred bucks

I'd have to agree with H.A. -- I just picked up a Canon S100.  There are better cameras out there, but I don't think there's a better pocket-able camera on the market right now.

Remember that the best camera in the world is the one you have with you.

That said, there is no comparison between a Blackberry or iPhone camera and a real camera like the S100.

The S100 has:

a very fast, high quality lens

is adjustable in just about every way (sand, dusk, dawn can all fool the 'auto brain' of a point 'n shoot)

Great self-timer options (for foursome pics).

And a tough little guy.

Recommended!

If you want to get video of a shot from 150, you need something with big time zoom and a steady hand.  I'm just worried that the video still won't work for what you want in a budget camera.  I don't think the focus could keep up with it....

I agree that the S100 is a fantastic camera.  It's longest effective focal length is something like 120mm though, so it won't really be able to get the green from 150 without a lot of cropping.  It does fit in a pocket very well and it might be fun to capture reactions after the shot instead of where the shot lands......

Now a pocket super zoom might be a good choice for an all around camera, with effective focal lengths in the 400-500 range for a max.  Nikon s9300, Canon xs260, and panasonic zs20 are all pretty good.  The canon and panasonic both have high speed movie modes up to 240 fps which would be fun for capturing swings and working on your game.  The nikon can do 120, which should suffice.  The panasonic has the best 1080p mode I believe.  All should be in the $300 range.

If you want to take video. I would look at a go-pro Hereo 2. I use mine all the time and it works great.

Unless you want to go into slow motion the regular hero is just as good. If your taking pictures (which I would reccomebd an actual camera for) the 2 is a little better

GoPro Hero - 5 Megapixel

GoPro Hero2 - 11 Megapixel

Sony NEX 7 with a 55-210 lens.  24 meg APS C size sensor..  Absolutely dinky, no weight, plus you aren't limited by a 14 meg sensor that is the size of a sim card...
