No place in this thread for my 140 yard 9 iron I guess

I play with people who are crazy long, so yes there are people out there who crush it. One kid I play with is the longest hitter I've ever seen, hits his 5 wood as far as I hit my driver. His long drives are in the 325-350 range. I've been playing golf for 8 years with plenty of great young players and have never seen anybody hit the ball as far as he consistently does. Is a 300 yard 18* hybrid doable? Yes, but not by many people.

The reason why people don't believe posters of obscene yardages is because this is the internet and we've seen tens of thousands of threads like this one. Distance is not a measure of a good player, but people here think it is. So to seek some sort of gratification they post about how far they hit the golf ball. Honestly, I have a hard time believing anybody who starts a thread about distance, I just can't take the idea of starting a thread about how far you hit it seriously. I've hit plenty of good drives but have made bogies from the middle of the fairway after those drives. I don't care how far anybody hits it, I only care about the score. My buddy blows it by me, but yesterday I still beat him by three strokes and took $20 from him in our match. Distance is subjective, scores are objective. I've got witnesses and tournament scores to prove I'm a decent player. What I don't have are shot-tracker stats that prove I hit my driver in the 280 range.

Here is one that happened 3 weeks ago on the 13th hole at Poipu Bay Golf Course during a work trip there.  The tees were up, with the wind at my back.  GPS read 324 to the front.  I pulled out the driver.  I aimed at the traps to the left of the green.  Landed just short of those and the the ball rolled right and just to the front of the green.  Pin was in front.  It was so awesome to drive the green on a par 4 there.  Should probably leave this out but I missed a pretty easy 15 footer for eagle.  One of the best drives I've ever hit.

Now now I didn't say always. I've shot my fair share of just flat-out awful rounds.

But again hitting it far doesn't mean you always win either, so it goes both ways. What I'm trying to say is I'd rather be a consistently decent player and hit it short than be a bad player and hit that occasional long drive.

I remember this hole,  I proceeded to hit a wedge into the water and made 6.

I am not the longest player, but occasionally I hit a few "Wow was that me".  In fact my longest drive I ever hit was in Hawaii., on Maui @ Kanapali.  Par 4 460 yards down hill & down wind I had 53 yards into the green.  Never came close since and I doubt I will.  That was 12 years ago.  Oh, by the way made 5. :).

Great thread Op.

Not sure if this is "Wrx-worthy" but I play a tiny course in St Paul MN sometimes (Como) and the 11th is a really short par 4 277 from the MGA plate, about 10 yards downhill, but all carry because the fairway is really sunken, like 20 yards sunken. It's a little intimidating because there's houses all the way down the left side, water most of the way down the right, a bunker short and right, and junk long and right. I finally carried the green the other day. 260-265 carry as best I can judge, but when you look at it from the tee box it tests your confidence. I felt pretty good about that.

See, and I didn't even quote you. ;)

I'm just saying for every guy that hits it 300 on a forum there are 3 guys that only hit it 250 , never miss a fairway , always shoot par to the longer guy's double bogey.

Its like some un-escapable universal equilibrium.  :)

On Friday I airmailed a green with an 18* hybrid from 291 in the fairway, flew it into a creek 40 yards past the green, so I was like that's a big hybrid 330 yds carry with no wind....Then I looked at the scorecard and saw that it was only a 514 yd par 5 so I realized that the host did not know how to read his GPS and I was more likely 191 yds from the green. oh well made 5.

I was in PEI last summer and drove the green on the opening hole. It was 324 uphill at sea level and I just got on the front so was probably a little over 300 yards. It's memorable because I two putted for birdie and ended up breaking 80 for the first time, shooting 77. It was also my birthday!

You didn't look at the shot and think, "That really doesn't look like 290 yards."?

I did but was a blind shot from the fairway, green was behind some trees and a pond.  Had to hook it in anyway.  So that is why I hit the 18* had a wide open area that would've been about 225-240 from were I was if I was in fact 291 out.  But you are correct I didn't trust his yardage but didn;t know the course at all and my laser was not picking up their flags to well.

I dropped another ball and hit a 4 iron adn was pin high so about 191.  I already had my match in hand so no big.

Shots Mr Pearsall takes pride in are ones that often lift a group's spirit, whether a disabled kid living in an orphanage watching him press a Nassau or a President marveling at a Jack Pearsall putt so pure.

A change of pace is in order, no long drive story here.

I played a par four with lots of water and dumped my second shot into the pond that fronts the green. I walk up to 50 yards drop a ball and shank my LW into the water, I drop another, now I am hitting 6. Hit the lob wedge again ball hits the flag stick right at the cup bounces up and forward. The hole was cut at the base of a large tier, hits the tier stops and rolls back into the cup. Best double bogey I every made.

Not a long drive story, but I am a bogey golfer who parred the "longest hole in San Antonio" yesterday.  #2 at Willow Springs is 663 from the tips, where the guys I was matched up with decided to play.

Funny thing is, I didn't sniff the fairway.  Took 3 wood off the tee, since I don't trust my driver.  240ish into the rough.  Hit a couple 3 hybrids into -alternating- sides of the rough.

Gap wedge to about eight feet, only decent putt of the round for par.

Can't seem to par the easy holes, but that one I nail.  Hah.

Yeah well I hit the green on a par 4

From the ladies tee's...

But in al seriousness I always kill my drive on number 9. It has a little downhill slope to it but it doesn't help much since i hit past that most of the time. I adverage 240-250 so when I hit a 280-290 drive it feels long for me. The sad part is the. 75 yards left i somehow have 5 more strokes

Got my second birdie yesterday, tee shot was about 130 out left side of the fairway, pulled the 9 out, swing felt good.  Ball landed and was either in front of or behind the hole but close (Couldn't tell from 130).  Cousin made it up to the green before my Uncle and I and asked Cousin where the ball was (He replied by pointing to his lip... lol)  That's my second "near eagle" ball in two rounds.. but I'll take the birdie all day long.  :)

I had one of those today.  Picture doesn't really do it justice but, it was a huge hook I had to hit into this green.  I hit a pretty poor tee shot and got a kick out but, I was behind a tree.  I was 180 out on a par5 and the safe shot was just to lay up but, being a par5 there was no way.  Hit a huge hook around the tree to 6 feet.  Also a super up and down round 6 birdies and 6 bogies for an even 71....  :russian_roulette:

Nice shot.  Unless my memory fails me, that's Tobacco Road's fourth hole, correct?  Did you try to hit it over the corner at 13?  It can be done.  TR is a blast on the days when the bogies go away!

Playing the Par 3 with my kid the other day... 135 yard 3rd hole.  He busts out the driver and gets 80 out of it.  Pretty cool, he's 10, small for his age, and just getting started.

I put the ball about six feet from the hole.  Then, drop another ball near his at around fifty yards to demonstrate a pitch.  Put that one to about six inches.  He knocked his to three feet.

We were quite the badarses...  Then I shanked my next tee shot out into the driving range.

Nothing worse than spanking a drive, knowing where it landed, and not finding it.

Yes there is... on a par 4 hitting a wonderfully long drive to the middle and 140 leave; only to spend 4-5 shots to get the ball in the hole.  Saw that with two different people the last couple of weekends.  One guy had 128yds in and took a 5.

Center of the fairway and less than 130 yards in and walking off with a bogey.  I call that a hole well played  :yahoo:

May have told this story before...

Couple weeks ago I played a short Par 5 with a good drive, lovely little 3-iron layup and left myself 60-some yards to a hole cut on the very front edge of the green. Half-swing wedge shot to a foot, tap-in birdie.

Three days later I play the same hole. Hit the same tee shot and was literally exactly the same distance and about five feet to the left of where I played the layup. I could see my old (filled) divot still. Hit another perfect 3-iron but this one came up a few yards shorter so I figured it would be maybe 70 yards with the same half-swing wedge.

Except now the hole is all the way in the back left corner of the green, behind an enormous bunker so deep you can't see the green from down in the bunker. So the laser says it's nearly 90 yards instead of 70. And come to think of it the breeze is across and from the left this time rather than behind me quartering from the right. Still, I figure that's my 90-yard club so let's go for it.

You can guess the rest. Swung hard, caught it just the tiniest bit fat and...

Plugged it in the front face of the bunker. Did not make birdie, did not make par, or bogey. In fact I missed my short putt for double and finished with a three-putt triple. Go figure.
