This phrase totally applies to the golf course or even the range at that!! So whom declared this phrase I salute you Mr. Wise phrase man!
I should'nt talk though because my golf course attire varies tremendously but generally comes down to a nice Izod polo and pants but by hole 2 I generally don't have my shoes on, unless its my run and golf day!

if you can play, it doesn't matter what you wear. If you can't, you better look like you can!
However, on the course there is an amendment. You have to at least look decent (good or not) and if you are really bad, you shouldn't dress like you are sponsored by someone (you're trying to hard)

Other than my lime green shirt that I wear for fundraisers as more of a joke, I can't quite pull off any of the louder, more colorful styles now. I also can't quite do the white belt, or white pants/shorts.
Although I like the golf style, and I like to wear it, I also try to not be the guy that is trying too hard to be "golf guy"

I played with this guy ^^ last week and he was lookin pretty slick in his red slacks and color coordinated glove. Lookin sharp! Inspired me to get some more colorful slacks.
Overall, I like to try and look put together, but I don't really care what others are wearing. I play with this guy on occasion who wears Khaki shorts with an elastic waist-band and no belt, and for some reason it bothers me. I still play with him and he is a good friend, I just don't get it....
With all this being said, I am a member at the course in which I live and I have on occasion (after hours) jumped in my cart with what I have one (sometimes jeans) and played a few holes to get some swings in. Should I get all dressed up to play a few holes when the course is closed?

What I don't understand is why guys are still wearing "pants" with pleats..whats that all about?
