Shepherd's Hollow 1-18 (Clarkston - has 27 holes)
Fieldstone (Auburn Hills)
Dunham Hills (Hartland)
The Orchards (Washington twsp.)
Lyon Oaks (South Lyon)
All of those are demanding courses so better have your "A" game. If you're more than about a 12 hdcp, or a little wild off the tee, you're probably going to be pretty frustrated playing them unless high scores and losing balls doesn't bother you. Personally don't like Northville Hills all that much but some of that's because one of my best friends was fired from there after doing a great job for them (cost cutting move). I won't play there anymore.

I find that the houses at NH encroach on the course less than at Pheasant. You have to hit it pretty far off line to get into a yard at Northville Hills.

Sheperds Hollow
Moose Ridge
The Majestic
Others that are worth trying are:
The Orchards
Northville Hills (expensive and lots of housing)
Coyote Preserve
Lyon Oaks
Fox Hills - Golden Fox
Fieldstone
Here's a link to photos: Detroit area courses
Some of these photose were taken in late Winter and early Spring just when the courses opened, so don't let the brown grass (e.g. Moose Ridge photos) deter you. It is a very good layout.

I just played northville hills and I agree you don't really notice the houses, especially on the back nine. Kinda short but very challenging.
