If you have too many thoughts and they mess you up then you should be worried about how to attack the golf course and how to think. Learn your swing so it isnt a mystery. When I quit drinking beer I broke 100 a lot more often.
Now I shoot in the 80's(most of the time...) and if Im working on a swing change 2-3 beers makes that change impossible to keep in play.
the perfect amount of beers is ZERO. Alcohol makes you do things you normally wouldnt so that means you are normally not good at golf. Drinking is the wrong way to fix that. The Dos Equis guy was right. Stay thirsty my friends.

If your mental game is really hurting your physical game, then 1 beer on the front and another on the back can really help some people. Much more than that and your physical game is going to fall off faster than any benefits from the mental game.
If your the type who's physical game is behind your mental game, then beer will only hurt you.

I'm much better at bowling after my 3rd drink.
I believe I'm even better after my 13th drink but my lifetime ban from the bowling alley and the Chuck E Cheese next store implies differently.

I personally don't drink unless during a scramble because a couple of beers just tires me out, and dehydrates me. But I have a buddy who pounds them down and doesn't play any worse or better.

But in reality I can´t down beers and keep my swing. I mostly only drink water on the course if I want to peform my best. No soda either. When I play with my dad though we often find a bench in the sun during the round and have a beer break.

If the goal is to relax, enjoy the golf and the company of your playing partners, a couple beers is great.

My nextdoor neighbor on the other hand, who is a scratch golfer, buys 6 beers from the clubhouse before we even tee off and drinks throughout the front 9. Then 6 more at the turn. Hard to knock the guy when he shoots under par after 12 beers. And yes, he plays in flip flops too.

A related story - About 10 years ago I played as a single and got paired with a twosome. This was a super cheap 9 hole dirt track and I played there just to get some quick after work swings in. These guys appeared lit before the round even started and continued to pound them. Number 1 could barely walk and I was lucky if I could understand half of what he said. Besides the beer, I'm convinced he was high on something else too. He was a real life Jim Ignatowski. I must have been wearing my thoughts on my face because Number 2 volunteered "he looks like this, but wait til you see him play." He was exactly right. The second the guy addressed his ball he was transformed. He wen from being unable to walk straight to hitting everything dead straight and long. On one hole, a par 4 that doglegged around a lake, he took aim at the green and landed it. You know how drunks will somehow walk away from seemingly horrific accidents because they were essentially Gumby? Well Gumby describes this guy's golf swing. I've never seen anyone take it back so far. It was like his spine was a wet pool noodle. One of the wierdest and most impressive things I've ever seen on a golf course.

All single digits, all enjoy golf better than most.
