That would be a knock down 3/4 58* for me... Depending on lie I may hit a 54 like a 2/3 swing that's just all feel

Full 56 SW.  Full shot is always better than 3/4 or anything like that.

Definitely lob wedge. I grab it at the bottom of the grip and swing away--almost 80 yards exactly.

what ya going to do?

in the past i have always hit my 60 wedge up in the air but always seem to over spin it but as of late i have been hitting my 56 with a couple bounces and getting it to stop.
anyways on the the WELLS FARGO i heard the tv crew talking about the new breed of kids prefering their 60's as opposed to a soft pitch or sandy.
i know most most of u can hit both but for me it was hard grabbing my sandy at first cause that yardage has 60 written all over it but my sandy is money for me.

what's your preference?

SW for me, about 80yds (73m)is my steady tempo full shot distance. Unless I murder it 60m is about my max for the LW

I'm much more comfortable hitting a little shot with my 54* versus a nearly full shot with my 58*.

I am similar, if the green is soft I will usually go for the 50 degree

Gw, 3/4 swing. Much easier to control. If the green soft it will stick.

I actually would use a half to 3/4 58*.  For some reaseon I hit it just as far as a full swing.   I doesn't go as high for some reason and I get a little draw due to the hands being so far in, basic as I start my swing, the hands are almost on the knees.

3/4 58* for me.  70-80 has become my favorite yardage. My course hasn't moved the range in a while so the first flag is at 78 and I hit to that all the time.

3/4 56* wedge shot.  If I hit a 60* at that, it'd back up off the damn green.

Knock down 56* wedge.

That shot scenario has "ball lands pin high and spins back into the bunker" written ALL over it, as far as my game is concerned.

Kids who are coming up in this post-proV1x era are less concerned about managing spin with their shot selection, because the golf ball is doing a lot of it for them.

The new wedge rule has further reduced spin....

mmm cant spin it on my greens at the minute so Id love this shot, full 60 degree, squeeze it just a hair and fly it about 85 yards, spin back the rest. On good greens my backup is fairly consistent, about 10-15 feet no more

Had almost this exact shot yesterday. Played a smooth 60 which took one hop and pulled back about two feet for a kick-in.

Anything over ~85 yds and I am grabbing my 56.

a slight hookey hard 9-3 LW or a soft higher slicey choked down 9-3 SW.

If it is a soft green, I hit 90% 58%.  I am not worried about spin because the green is soft and so the landing will take a lot of spin off it.  I am a low spin player anyway.

Bunkers in front and slow greens have no bearing.  Fast greens get my attention.  Pin position, green speed and "lie" determines the club.  Ninety-eight percent of the time I use 59*, from inside of 50yds.  Saturday and Sunday I had a total of 3 shots between 75-90yds and used 53*, which is used from 40-90yds, but good to 105yds.  My 59* is good to 90yds, however it's never used over 50yds.  How much spin my ball has is the result of swing speed and how I impact the ball.

Smooth 56* past flag with some spin back towards hole, hopefully. Easier to control then a full 60* for me.

My Srixons like greenside sand and rough though. They must be defective or something.

26 years old. I would've been a 60* guy from this distance in high school or even first year of college golf, but now I don't like full swing 60*'s. No point for me unless I really have to take it over something. I can put plenty of spin on whichever club I use and I generally don't take a full swing on a club after the 52* or 53* GW (depends which wedges I am playing). I like my LW for touch shots and use it 50 yards and in. Most of my chipping however is 8i, PW, GW, SW. Personally I like knockdowns, pitches, bump and runs, 1/2 swing and 2/3 swing wedges.

Funny I saw this today, yesterday I was evaluating my wedge collection and this is very similar to the shot I was using.

My conclusion anything other than a very good fairway lie, I should hit a hold off 56 90% of the time,  on a great lie 60.

If the pin is back, with a ridge in the green, I should hit a one hop stop with a 50% gap wedge.

That's my thought process on this shot.

First - you're making an assumption by attributing someone's age to new or old school.  Age and new or old have nothing little to do with scoring results.

has to be 56..  my 60 spins too much with soft greens...  The tour guys using 60, etc...  is all based on the greens being hard as rocks.  My thoughts would be totally different if I played on the greens that the tour has to play on daily...  different problem..

Just a plain old 9 to 3 58*. It should take one hop and stop about a foot from the pitch mark.

Great to hear everyone's opinions. Goes to show you, everyone has a different train of thought and thinks about it a totally different way.

80 yards is a 3/4 to a full 58* for me, depending on wind. I might even use a 1/2 54* wedge. Or you could always try to putt it from 80 yards like I saw this guy do the other day, gosh that was embarrassing. For me, and I didn't even know the guy. Just tap it in, just tap it in...Give it a little tappy..Tap tap taparoo...
