what ya going to do?

in the past i have always hit my 60 wedge up in the air but always seem to over spin it but as of late i have been hitting my 56 with a couple bounces and getting it to stop.
anyways on the the WELLS FARGO i heard the tv crew talking about the new breed of kids prefering their 60's as opposed to a soft pitch or sandy.
i know most most of u can hit both but for me it was hard grabbing my sandy at first cause that yardage has 60 written all over it but my sandy is money for me.

what's your preference?

Low flighted sand wedge.  80 yards is out of my comfort zone with a LW.

So funny, I had this shot (83 and 87 yards)  twice the other day and both times hit full, but not stepped on, 60's with great results. Ball slightly more forward in my stance, not trying to compress the heck out of, so a little shallowed out angle into the ball and on both shots and the ball just went high, landed softly backed up less than a foot and both were close. It looked like I knew what I was doing!

This is also funny because i had similar shots from like 90-95 yards and really struggled with hitting a 56 with something less than a full swing but way more than a pitch. I am interested to see others responses. Good topic!

I'm much more comfortable hitting a little shot with my 54* versus a nearly full shot with my 58*. I just need to go spend more hours at the range with my wedges.

It all depends on where the flag is for me... if the flag is on the front of the green, I'd hit lob wedge and try to back it up towards the pin.

If it's in the middle/back I'd probably go with a soft sand wedge and try to just hit a shot that stops dead.

Regardless of which shot I try to hit, I will end up in the bunker... my imagination is a much better golf than I am.

In reality, though, I will hit either... just depends on how I'm feeling that day and how much danger I want to flirt with. The 60 allows me to work with less green, but adds risk as I'm more likely to mishit it.

I'd hit a nice smooth SW, since that's the short end distance of my sand wedge.  I'd also make sure I was long, don't leave it in the bunker.  I'd rather putt twice then try and get up and down from a bunker.

I'd use my 58° throw it up and play it like a dart to the flag.... then i'd prob find myself chipping from off the green in the rough haha

I love the 80 yard shot. It's the yardage I've always tried to get to if I'm ever in trouble off the tee or can't reach a par 5 in two for whatever reason. I go a little smooth speed 3/4ish 58º let it skip once and grab.

I'd rather do a nice and easy 3/4 sand wedge than a full lob wedge.  But thats mainly because of the grinds on them.  My sand wedge is made for full shots and my lob wedge has a grind for touch shots.

I usually ply a prov1 so I'd throw it past and let it spin but if I'm gaming my srixon qstars then I'm hitting it high and trying to land it close

Nice and easy 58* should put me right on the back.

Lob wedge quiet hands and a decent rip, not a full one, but a good 3/4 quarters. Key is quiet hands for me

Full 56* sand for me on this shot. With the bunker in the front I'd rather be over than short.

I'll use my sand wedge also.  I'm better at partial shots with my SW than with the LW.

I seem to be part of the new breed that prefers the lob. I would hit a short swing 58 with a driving traj. The punch spinner is a shot that once practiced is a very easy shot to repeat.

Depends on the situation.  What is the green like, speed, firmness, lie, hole location... I would use either depending on these.  Also, how well I am hitting each wedge would play a part

I'm with nmanoles3...
Same exact thing he said..   Little 3/4 punch 58* would be perfect...takes one big hop, then puts on the brakes..
could hit that shot thru a burning hoop with a circus right behind me, while my wife is yelling form the golf cart asking me who's empty beers these are...!!!
very easy shot to hit (for me) & 100% reliable

If the pin is back I'd play a soft half swing 54 if the pin is tucked id open up the stance slightly with a 60 take a smooth 3/4 swing along my body line and finish high ... 60% of the time it works everytime

half swing 54.  i very very very rarely hit a full blown 60 unless I have to go over an obstruction. BUT knowing the bunkers are in front I'd rather just plan to miss long and avoid playing out of the bunker.

With trouble front I would hit 60*.   Normally though I would prefer an easy 56*.

Choked down 7 iron, 50 yard raking hook, pitch it on the front and let it roll in to the cup.

Then I wake up and hit a little 58 degree wedge and hope it sticks somewhere near the hole.

Pin at the back a sawed off 52* pin at the front 57.5* to the middle of the green if it spins back good if not, I still have a putt, being in the bunker is a losers play.

My set-up is 54-58, but I'll take the 58 all day in this situation. 80 yards is a very smooth, pretty much a 3/4 58 for me, so it's not really a shot I'd expect to get lots of spin on, so I'd would be comfortable with flying the bunker and not spinnig it back into it.

i have this problem now.

i played all of high school and college with just a pitching and sand wedge.  never carried a lob.  quite frankly didn't need it because i didn't have that type of distance gap in my clubs.  sand wedge went 95-100 tops so 80 isn't really backing off much.

i'm a lot stronger now though than 10 years ago.  Sand wedge tops out at 110-112ish so i got my first lob wedge a few months ago.    haven't quite got the distance down yet.  too many fat shots with it, but when I strike it then i'm good for 85 yards.

i'm generally a believer in taking the full cut since that's going to give a more consistent approach, but in this scenario i'd take the sand wedge and try to use "aggressive touch" to make sure i'm over the bunker.
