So I was able to get a few swings in today with what I would consider the "hot" 3 woods on the market, along with a slew of great shafts. Admission: I am a bad fairway wood player. Easily the weakest part of my game, I haven't felt super comfortable over a 3 wood since my TiSi Tec cracked. Not lost on me was the fact that it was also the flattest FW I've ever had...
Anyway, I hit my current Adams XTD (which I am not in love with in current form) against the non- Tour RBZ, G20, i20, XCG5, CB4 Tour, 910f, and Razr Fit. My shafts of choice were the Accra DyMatch 2.0 (I believe the MT-F M4), 'ilima 70 S, and Kai'li 70 S&X. The XTD is the hottest club of the bunch, and conveniently for me also has the heaviest head which makes playing with shafts and swingweights a touch easier. The Exotics were a HUGE letdown, and I was really shocked that they didn't perform. Ball speeds were lower, launch windows were ok with both. Feel was hollow and flight was just nothing special. Overall, I expected more. The G20 was also a letdown. Low ball speeds, higher spin, mid launch, left bias. The i20 was great, straight flight, good launch and spin numbers, GORGEOUS. Unfortunately the ball speeds were just lower than the XTD. The Razr Fit and the Titleist were both solid, the Razr Fit being lower spinning, but again, very "ehhh." The only club even worth mentioning in the same breath as the XTD was the RBZ. If the lie was flatter and the head was more open on the RBZ it may have been a contender for me. I was shocked at how solid it felt. It was relatively easy to launch even off a stance mat, so the large size didn't bother me too much. Overall, it fought the left a bit too much, and the ball speeds were a little lower than the XTD.
My overall results? The XTD with the Accra felt the best, produced the best ball speeds, most consistent launch/spin rates, and was the easiest to cut along with the i20. I was getting 154 mph ball speeds off the deck with a 103 swing speed, launching at 13* with 3300 rpms, consistently carrying in that 248-253 range. I did not carry one of the other clubs more than 245, and none of them with the exception of one hit with the RBZ ended up within 10 yards of my average with the XTD.
I'm not on staff with anyone, went into this with an open mind, and felt like I was putting decent swings on everything. The XTD is simply THAT good. Additionally, my fitter told me my driver numbers were probably the most "optimized" he had ever seen on Trackman lol, which is nice to hear.
