* Tommy Gainey will lose his card if he doesn't maintain position in the 4th round. Today he was in good shape and plummeted to 75, a few weeks after a disastrous Sunday 80. A guy like that will miss so many cuts and have other events where he's never in contention that he has to seize opportunity in his "up" events, like last year.
* Today was a success when Webb Simpson failed. I didn't really care about the playoff at that point, although I rooted for Rickie. No apologies for my distaste for Simpson. I'd recognize the vitriol in the Feinstein threads only if Simpson were the topic.
* Rory plays too many cut off shots into the green, with the hold off follow through to the right. He lost the tournament by choosing 7 iron and not 8 iron on 17. Rickie picked 8 iron so no way Rory makes sense with a 7. He needed to hit a full 8 toward the middle of the green, not an uncertain 7 that he instinctively shoved right.
* Rory still makes far too many unforced errors, particularly after great tee shots. That's what differentiates Tiger, who doesn't throw away shots when he's playing near peak. Everybody talks about Rory's drive on 10 last year at Augusta but he got the poor day started by missing long from the middle of the fairway on 1, and failing to save par. Rory isn't a good enough putter to put strain on chipping.
