So, I'm always looking for a good ball that I can pick up new for next to nothing (less than a buck a ball).  I use to play Mojo's and Pinnacle Exceptions but I need more spin on my approach shots.  Any leads on that cheap ball that performs better than it's price?  I've been looking at Snake Eyes and MacGregor and have noticed the Wilson Zip.  Any of good or bad words about these?  I know many will say the Gamer V2 or lostgolfballs.com.  I'm looking for the lesser known balls.  Any hot leads for me?

Firstly, come up just a little on your "buy".

Wilson 50 Elite (old model; still NOS availble for $13 a box, so that is about buck a ball)

or

Wilson Duo (latest model; not going to find discounts yet)

IF you are sub 90 mph driver SS.

The Wilson Zip is my personal fave in low-compression balls. Soft feel at impact and off the putter with better-than-average greenside control/spin in the Value ball category. At current prices ($25 for 2 boxes), they're a real bargain!

I've stated this in some other threads as well.  The Zip is a very nice ball - and can actually be found for $20 for 2 dozen or like posted above $25 for 2 dozen worst case scenario.   I play that ball in cooler/colder weather.  Then I stocked up on some Wilson FG Tours which is a premium ball.  Bought the "blemished" version at budgetgolf.com for $15 a dozen for some and then they ran a better deal at $12 a dozen.  So I stocked up big time (16 dozen).  Awesome ball & at that price it's a downright steal.

Not necessarily true. It depends on conditions as well. I've a higher SS than 90 and after using the Duos for 9 holes in 50 deg, rainy weather, didn't see any significant distance loss off the driver, given those conditions. Irons and wedges were comparable too, and these balls are incredibly soft around and on the greens. I'm waiting for a warmer round to see how the Duos perform then.

I'm in the same boat. I swing around 98-102 and I love the 330-RX but don't like the $40 a box. If you have an academy sports near you, they sell the Wilson Staff 50 Elites for 9.99 a dozen. I tried them for the first time this morning. I felt like I may have lost a few yards off the tee because the ball did not roll out down the fairway like the 330 or the burner TP (my two favorite balls), but for $10 bucks a box - you'd be amazed how well these balls behave on the green. Any full swing with an 8, 9, or wedge too one hop and hit the brakes. Love 'em. Probably going to go back this weekend and grab a couple more boxes just in case they discontinue them.

I'm also wanting to try the zips - I feel like that driver distance issue might be negated by the zips.

I think the fifty elite is a terrific off season or budget ball.

If your looking for more green side spin, you need a Urethane cover ball.  McGregor VIP for 12.99 a box at Golfsmiths.

Have not try them. USGA conforming list them as Medium spin off driver and High spin off wedge.
