Huh, is this unique to a PVD finish then? Interesting...BB

Yeap,, it is the finish.  I have a black PVD Rat that has the same rainbow discoloration in the same area.  I just think that is just the PVD application on stainless steel.  I don't think there is much it can be done about it.

People are selling this for more money as the rainbow version.

This is horseshoit IMO.  Having said that, the one that buy one under that premise, deserves to be a sucka, lol.....

You would think $350 would get you more than this.

Cameron had problems with the finish on the Studio Designs, Circa '62's, California's and now this.  You think he would be able to figure it out.  I haven't heard complaints about the finish on the $79 Cleveland Classic Black Platinums.

Hating makes the world go round!

The truth hurts.  So this is the rebuttal Cameron fans give rather than addressing facts.  If I paid $350 for a putter that had this kind of problem I would be upset too.

+1. If I paid $40 for a golf club that wasn't made the way it was advertised, I'd have a problem. Much less $350. If you bought a spin milled vokey and the face didn't have milling marks because "it's common for companies to screw up the milling where there are grooves," wouldn't you be pissed? i would.

Mine is black as night, I'm happy. If it changes I will be getting a brand new one without the rainbow.

I've had mine for two days and noticed a Browning on the top of the rear bumper. The best way to describe it is like a water spot on a ceiling. It is kind of distracting and doesn't make me too happy since it's a custom loft and lie angle.

Does anyone know who to contact about this or is the consensus the finish is something I need to live with.

I have two of these and neither one shows those colors.

I have looked at numerous black Scotty select putters and I haven't noticed those rainbow colors.

question:  Is it appearing over time or was it there at the time you received it?

I have a 2012 Newport 2 and was out for my first round today and noticed the rainbow effect on one occasion.  It happened as I was crouching to read a putt.  To me it appeared less like it was from the finish and more from the sun reflecting off the silver rings on the back of the putter.  I didn't pay much attention to it and it didn't really bother me at all as I never noticed when I was lining up to hit a putt.

For mine it appeared after the first day. I looked it over very well when I got it and there was no discoloration. Like I said before, it's like a water spot on the ceiling. Dark in the middle and lighter on the edges. I don't want a replacement because I really like this one. A new putter will never be the same. I'm just wondering if there are other Selects discoloring in the same spot.

I have it on the back of my Bettinardi.   Honestly could care less because I don't look at the back of my putter.

I had a spot on the top line of my Newport (see picture).  I thought it was just variation in the finish; however, I hit it with some acetone and the spot came right off.  I can tell you that the spot was not water soluble, but acetone did the trick.  I think it was likely an oil residue that was left on the putter from manufacturing.  You might give acetone a try, it won't hurt the finish.

I have a notchback 1 of 500.  I haven't taken it on the course but I did notice some discoloration (not a rainbow) but a spot discoloration.  I think it's the oil in our fingers that make these spots.  I was ableto wipe the putter down with a dry cloth and the spots disappearred.  Once again, i have taken it out on the course so I don't know if we are talking about two different types of discoloration.

Anyone else having problems with the finish "flaking"?  I used it one round and there are a few spots under the Scotty Cameron (face) that are flaking off.

I emailed Scotty Cameron to see what can be done

That sounds defective to me.  I'm sure SC will fix this for you and make it right.

So....not sure if this was ok but they fixed it by replacing the head.  My problem, the shaft band was stripped and the putter came with chemical all over it.  Oh, the headcover was worse off then when I sent it.

I've got some friends that work with PVD materials and they say the rainbowing actually comes from a contamination in the PVD chamber.  This can be introduced into the chamber on purpose, but you would see a full rainbow look (ie Bubba's putter).  When you hear stories of peeling that typically is because the putter was cleaned properly before getting PVD'd or another chemical was introduced during the process.  It sounds like both issues are taking place.  Fingerprinting will happen, but good quality control will stop the rainbow.

That is why I asked about poster who mentioned the Bettinardi putter. The 2011/2012 lines are advertised to have a iris finish, so those are supposed to have that rainbow type effect.

If it was on a putter that was not advertised as such, then Bettinardi QC is slipping I guess. I do like the more subdues rainbow effect on the 2012 line at address but just holding the putter the 2011 is better to look at.
